No it didn't. Begins was the 8th highest grossing movie of 2005. The seven movies that made more money were Star Wars, Narnia, Harry Potter, War of the Worlds, King Kong, Wedding Crashers, and Willy Wonka.

But, anyway, the problem with this current Batman franchise (and this is something that was discussed when Begins was released) is that its not a kid friendly franchise. And I'm not talking about darkness. The first Batman was dark and it was #1 for `89 and Batman Returns was dark AND violent and it was #3 for `92. What I'm talking about is the fun factor. Batman Begins was a great movie. It had a good story and well-developed characters but it wasn't a "fun" movie. Kids who went to see that movie got bored. The Burton movies didn't have that problem. There was a lot of fun stuff in those movies. These days people complain about Joker dancing to Prince music or pulling a giant gun out of his pants but, admit it, when you were a kid you thought that stuff was great. So, since kids aren't really attracted to the current Batman franchise it'll suffer at the box office. Indiana Jones doesn't have that problem. Kids will go see it and enjoy it.

So, I think Indy will win the box office.

word... i'm not saying that indy will win, because i don't think it looks very good, but people that think either the dark knight or indy will do iron man numbers are kidding themselves. that movie is a powerhouse right now, and will continue to be for the next few weeks, including through indy. no way will jones get as high of reviews as iron man, nor have as broad an audience. say what you want, but kids now a days could care less about some old guy with a whip running through the jungle. iron man just sells better. and kids will not be seeing the dark knight. and even if they do, with the likely lack of action and just pure fun-factor, they won't be seeing it multiple times like they did iron man.

Indy 4: 350,000,000

The Dark Knight: 300,000,000

I highly doubt any movie this year will make more than 300 million dollars. As a result of the recession the box office has been down this year. Even Iron Man's $100 million opening is lower than last year.

no way will jones get as high of reviews as iron man, nor have as broad an audience.

I say TDK will make more at the B.O, simply because i can't see myself going to see Indy more than twice. With BB i went back and saw it 5 times during it's theater run.

I disagree, love indy or hate him he's gonna do big business, Children are not the only people who bring in money to a family film, Fans of the old indys will flock to see the new one, as will many a new fan who has been born since the last crusade who grew up on them yet have never seen them.

Iron may be doing big business but i highly doubt it will come anywhere near indy's box office.

For every ten people who see The Dark Knight, thirty will see Indiana Jones. I honestly think that's how it will go.

you can  all you want, but review-wise, the closest thing to iron man's 93% at rottentomatoes.com was Raider's 95%... Crusade landed at 89%, and Temple at 87%... and this was all during indy's hay day, 20 years ago. and say what you will, but just about everything from kingdom of the crystal skull so far has been met with an overall feeling of "meh" from the general public. nostalgia aside, indy is an archaeologist with a whip. iron man is a damn flying robot with lasers and missles... tell me, which one has the broader audience?

iron man is already sitting at $220 million worldwide, after a week, and batman begins ended up with only $370 worldwide, after almost 21 weeks in the theater. begins also only ended up bringing in an 84% at rottentomatoes.com.

True. I think Indy is a more family friendly character than Batman. I think it's gonna come down to which one is the better film.

And you really think you'll make much of a difference? You contributed 50 bucks to the box office. A family watching Indiana Jones just ONCE will contribute more than that!

indy is an archaeologist with a whip. iron man is a damn flying robot with lasers and missles... tell me, which one has the broader audience?

And Spider-Man is a cry baby teenager who shoots webs. Yet it was last years highest grossing movie.

TDK.

I have a bad feeling about Indy IV...

My thoughts as well.

The general public called and said you don't know what you are talking about. Indy IV is the most anticipated movie this year. Google it for yourself. Research is your friend.:whatever:

Box-Office I can guess will belong to 'Indy IV' more so, but 'Indy IV' will not be as good as 'The Dark Knight'. Seems like a cheap cash-grab to me, sorta like 'Live Free or Die Hard', may have been a good movie but it was obviously all about the money in the end. There's no need for this Indy sequel, unless it was like 'Rocky Balboa' or 'Rocky VI' as I like to call it; where they made that movie to send a message out to everyone while not giving to f's about the money they make in the box-office. I'm personally not looking forward to 'Indy IV' but maybe if the critics agree that it's a good movie, I'll check it out, but I don't think I'll like it because it just doesn't feel the same as it did so long back down the road. I didn't really like 'Live Free or Die Hard' because of that simple reason because I think that the franchise should've ended in that decade. Although 'Rocky Balboa' felt necessisary because the way 'Rocky V' screwed-up the franchise was just unbelievable and there was no way that, that a franchise as great as 'Rocky' should've ended on a crappy-ass note like that. 'Indy IV'... same case as 'Die Hard IV', maybe not for all of you, but that's just the way I feel.

google it, hm?

maybe you can point it to the page on google that shows what people are looking forward to?

i think that spielburg and lucas thought to themselves "yeah, it's indy, even if it looks like crap, and we criminally under-advertise it, people will still go see it, and it'll make crazy bank." but the fact is that it is very under-advertised, and it just doesn't really look that good.

You seem to be the one speaking for the general public, but ok. It took me two seconds just for these.

I guess Spielberg and Lucas are clueless. Huh? :cwink:

There's no need for this Indy sequel,

The reason is a **** load of people want to see one. This isn't a Rambo or Die Hard situation, people have been anticipating a sequel since the third one came out, and Spielberg and Ford have been promising it and publicly pushing Lucas to agree to it. No one decided a few years ago that this would be an easy way to cash in. Maybe that was Paramount's reason to pay for it, but do you think Warner Brothers weren't motivated by the fact Batman movies make them money?

Indiana Jones is directed by one of the world's favorite directors, stars a beloved actor as an iconic character, it's part of a much-loved series, it's running on nostalgia, it's been hyped to hell and back, it's made to please almost everybody, it's fun, it has a lot of comedy. And even though George Lucas has lost a lot of the respect he once had, you'll have a lot of anticipation to see if he did a better job with this.

Batman is dark, has got a director and star with a more narrow appeal, more specifically aimed at comic and action fans, it's not going to be fun, it's overtly dark, it's not going to be very funny.

TDK certainly isn't going to do badly, and Ledger's death will probably help it. It may even be a better movie. But Indy has everything needed to be a huge hit.

I couldn't decide between the two so I flipped a coin. Indy.

I rented the Indiana Jones DVD's to refresh my memory and although their good movies, lets face it they get pretty boring with all the Germans, Nazis and Holy Grails, if critics give Crystal Skull good reviews then I might go see it.

Dark Knight is the clear winner in my mind, Batman is timeless and I prefer movies set in the present.

This Summer belongs to the bat...........................................................as in 1989!

:o

You say most of that like people really care what the critics say, yes people will go off a review but in the end a person does not care about a review, many films get poor reviews of less than 70 or 80% on Rotten Tomatoes yet still do big business. People haveand will always make there own mind up whether to see a movie, we are not sheep, we dont follow the herd.

Im looking forward to both equally but id say indy will do better than TDK just because ive never seen my dad so excited about a film coming out, i think indy has more of a family appeal thus will make more money,

bearing in mind i rekon their both gonna be awesome

Indiana Jones IMO blows tons of chunks, however without a doubt it will unfortunately make more money than The Dark Knight at the box office worldwide, but TDK will very very likely get alot of good reviews. Indiana Jones 4 will however get mixed reviews IMO. :word:

The best thing Indy has going for it is the month of June. There's not much in the first couple of weeks after Indy comes out, so it should do decent repeat business. TDK has to contend with The X Files in its second week. I'm not saying TXF will be first place, but it should take a lot of business away.

For me, personally, I might go see Indy twice and TDK twice, maybe even three times, depending on circumstances.

Yeah, but last year Spider-Man 3 opened that weekend and even though that movie didn't meet people's expectations everyone still wanted to see the next film in the franchise. Iron Man was a new franchise of a somewhat unknown character, it's star never had a movie that grossed over $100 mil at the box office in it's entire run and the director has known more for comedies. Iron Man showed people have just been waiting for a good, fun movie to come out before they went to the box office. I think because of the recession people will flock more to the theaters to escape from the crapiness of the real world this summer.

X-Files last movie made $83 mil and that was when it was very popular, I doubt this movie will make even that much.

Like I said, I don't expect it to be #1 its opening weekend, but I'd expect it to eat into TDK's receipts. I wouldn't be surprised to see TDK have at least a 50-60% drop its second weekend.

Indy is in no way like Die Hard 4. Die Hard lowered it's rating, only brought back one familar face and had a new director. Indy has the same cast and crew and isn't going to tone down it's feel to cast a wider audience net (since it doesn't need to). Rocky was not necessary, who cares if Rocky 5 sucked, there were 4 others that were good (or at least decent), Rocky 6 just rehashed the original Rocky's story basically. Indy is using a new story. Indy is the perfect summer movie, a fun action-adventure comedy for the entire family, I think the movie has everything going for it, it's got the broadest appeal of any movie coming out this summer.
