Because it helps tell characters apart in comics.
Which also explains why characters don't *necessarily* need them as much in live action: you don't need the same visual shorthand to make characters identifiable despite varying artists and styles.
Which is why, IMO, you see people complaining about Danny Rand, but not Jessica Jones or Luke Cage. While the latter two don't wear costumes in the shows, they *do* have clear visual identities and aesthetics. They may lack costumes, but they have good, effective and appealing "non-costumes", so to speak. Whereas Danny Rand simply lacks any coherent visual identity. His clothes and style don't say anything about him, or even just deliver an attractive image.
