Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

It was just rumors. For example Campea said two (?) people who he said are high level people at Disney said it's the best MU movie yet. Considering how different the views have been among critics it's very possible it was to them. It's very clear some people view the film differently than others. Because of that I don't understand why some posters here are latching themselves on to the negative opinions and labeling them as "a general opinion". It gives off the impression that they wanted this to fail in the first place and are looking for the slightest reason to verify that opinion.

That is because people did want this to fail to validate their opinions. All over the internet, people have been questioning why Marvel dare make movies out of so many new IPs in Phase 4, and Eternals is already being used as the launch point of the "see, Marvel got arrogant and should never take risks or do anything new again" narrative.

I am not saying Eternals is good. I haven't seen it yet. But to your question on why people are immediately latching onto the negative and already are painting this movie as a mistake before it opens, that is why

A lot of people have been anticipating and wanting to see Marvel stumble and make a flop going back to Ant-Man and wanting to find a break in the chain so to speak. It's like Green Goblin says, the only thing they love more than a hero is to see him fail. And yet even with films that seemed like even tougher sells, they continued to find success. I'm sure a lot of miffed DC Comic fans desperately want it as well. To finally see Marvel experience some of the failure they've had to endure over the years.

Eternals being a flop will depend on how they open at the box office.

Yeah I can still see this doing relatively well at the box office because it is Marvel, and people will still want to see it because it's Marvel.

I’m mean even if this movie does end up flopping, it will simply be seen as an anomaly in Marvel’s nigh spotless thirteen year track record. No Way Home(if it’s good) will likely be seen as a return to form. And that’s coming out literally a month after Eternals comes out.

I think it will depend on its legs, because from what I can gather the general consensus on this film is that it seems to be a drastic departure from the usual fun tone of the MCU. A lot of critics down on the film have complained about pacing and even an inability to connect to some of the characters. To me, that’s an automatic red flag as far as the rewatchibility factor goes for this movie with audiences. I’ve watched quite a few reviewers say they don’t have the urge to watch the movie a second time because the first viewing experience underwhelmed them. That’s pretty unusual for a Marvel film and that can only be attributed to the film being the greatest departure Marvel has made in tone in its thirteen years in existence. All I can say is that it will be very interesting to see how audiences respond to this MCU movie compared to the previous ones.

RT doesn't generally encourage or discourage me from seeing a movie unless it's something I know very little about. Given that Marvel has a high profile, not having a high score on RT "might" not affect OW box office that much? How it plays to the general audience will probably have a greater long term effect. Still, with a current RT rating of just 66%, I would expect it to be on the low side of OW expectations.

We'll see how it does the second weekend. If it's a slower movie and not a traditional MCU film that hits the same beats that audiences come to expect, that might turn them off.

All I know is that for some reason film twitter have had it out for this movie. They've always hated Marve movies and resented it being on top, there's no surprise there, but I thought that this would be the movie they would want to succeed since it's Chloe. But for whatever reason, they have targeted Eternals and Chloe.

I knew it would happen one day, but I wish it wasn't this movie. On the bright side, it could have been worse. Imagine the first MCU Xmen or Fantastic 4 movie being received like this.

You don't think it's possible that they just didn't like the film?

I'm not talking about those who have seen the movie or the critics. This has been going on Weeks before anyone watched it.

A Fantastic Four movie being received like this would still end up being the best reception a F4 movie has gotten. :o

And mostly american reviews it looks like

foreign critics are always much nicer, usually we get their reviews first

Based on the handful of international critics so far, I wouldn't say they're going to be easier on this film than their American counterparts.

Hmm. This is going to be the last Marvel ip to get a 1st headlining Mcu movie in a long while. The next are Fantastic Four, Blade, Deadpool and Sam Wilson - we already have seen those four in previous movies even if, they were outside of the Mcu, so those aren't really new territory compare to Eternals.

I hope Marvel Studios focuses more sequels/3quels and the X-Men, before venturing to another obscure Ip. Ireally can't think of any obscure Marvel Ip left, that I see getting a feature film. Inhumans really isn't obscure anymore even if their show flopped. Squirrel Girl is I guess is the closest I could think of, but she isn't as obscure as Eternals.

This is 100% true. Usually, the reviews have a tendency to sink some because of this.
I wish this had Early Access screenings lol

Me too, but I won't be able to see it until the Tuesday after it opens. I was going to see Dune yesterday, but I had to meet with a contractor at noon so I put it off until this Tuesday. I love those weekday matinees schools are in session. I'll let everyone use their imagination as to why. :funny:
