I want them to treat this as a sci fi/fantasy epic. Just... Go easy on the funny ha-has this time Marvel, please. Have jokes but for ****s sake it doesn't have to literally be every five minutes of a movie's run time.

I'm not getting my hopes up. Also, I wonder which character will be spewing the pop culture references in this one?

It has already been revealed that the Marvel film, more science-fantasy epic than superhero movie, will take place across thousands of years and take us through the history of the Marvel universe as witnessed by the god-like figures known as the Eternals. Sersi, confirmed at D23 to be portrayed by Gemma Chan, is known for her desire to live among humans, which puts her at odds with some of the older Eternals. A love story is said to be essential to the film, and there’s little doubt that Sersi and Whitman won’t be at the center of that.

I think Marvel may ruffle some feathers if it’s an white man / Asian woman romance. I know these are gods, but it’s a worn out trope.

I'm worried about this as well. I don't mind jokes when it's tonally appropriate, but looking at Doctor Strange (another more "epic" property with a more serious main character) and some of the jokes were really terrible or jarring. I hope I'm wrong, but I have a gut feeling we may get some mixed results akin to DS 1 (possibly similar box office results as well).

Sersi seems likely seeing that she loves living amongst humans. Picturing an adaptation of her intro scene from the Kirby run with more references about the stuff she loves about humankind lol

As long as Sersi is a fully fleshed-our character and the relationship doesn’t bear shades of colonialism (which seems unlikely) I doubt this would be a problem.

She's a lead character, I have no doubt she will be treated right.

Sersi is by far the more powerful of the two and as an Eternal most definitely the one that will get the lion's share of attention between them. I don't think there's really anything of substance that applies to this situation in regards to this trope.

Hopefully they don’t rely on that trope. I mean really Sersi doesn’t have to be anyone’s girlfriend white or other. Maybe in a sequel but yeah, hooking up with Ikaris is a bit predictable

Yeah I’m not saying it will actually follow that trope but could be received that way. I wouldn’t be surprised to see articles about it once the first trailer comes out pushing that romance.

Sersi and the Black Knight have a romantic link in the comics which includes their psychic bonding in a method/ritual of the Eternals that is akin to marriage called the Gann Josin. Notable as this is something not open to outsiders in the Eternal culture.

While the MCU differs from the comics it would be odd to have Black Knight there and have him not be Sersi's love interest since his only canon connection to the Eternals is in fact his romantic relationship with Sersi established during their service in the Avengers.

Oh I know but I wasn’t referring to him being American. He just seemed so out of place in it. I know he’s done period stuff before like Young Guns and I even have a soft spot for that stupid Three Musketeers movie but for some reason he just stuck out like a sore thumb in Pompeii.

This movie has potential to be so great. Everything I see from it or hear about it sounds awesome. I really hope Feige and the filmmakers are able to deliver on the potential.

And what about Salma Hayek? Will she get an "And" credit? Or maybe that will be Angelina Jolie's?

they weren't filming when gemma was casted.
the fliming news was probably about shooting background, prodiction or something like that.
for example jolie was in korea till 23 then LA till 27, (D23 was 24) she wasn't shooting.
Also variety and others mentioned gemma as lead role.

I don't think that just because an actor is better known that they will have a big role in the film. It may be important but not necessarily much screen time.
I think chan and madden will probably get the most screen time.

Intriguing. I hope they explore this.

They are all leads. Two or three characters might get more screentime than the rest, but I don't think its going to be much. Something about the way they pitched this movie and the casting points to this being more of an ensemble movie than just having two leads while the rest supports. And focusing on all of them is going to be better than focusing on some romance while the rest hang in the background like set decoration. We don't want another fox Xmen situation here. If this movie is going to be as epic as they are selling it, then we need to know all these characters and how they impact the history of the MCU.

Angelina Jolie will probably get the “and” credit and Salma Hayek will get the “with” credit. I don’t think she’s a lead in the sense that she’ll be the “Thor” of the film. She’ll be that lead supporting character while Ikaris and Sersi will be the actual leads.

Hayek's character is the leader in story, but not necessarily or likely the lead in the movie. Hopkins as Odin was leader of Asgard but obviously not the lead in Thor's movies, for example. In the comics Thena's father Zuras is leader and after him it's Thena herself, but they've clearly decided to go a different route (likely because having Zuras would be so similar to having Odin again).
