Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

The plot appears by the trailers to revolve around the impending arrival or awakening of a Celestial. I recently read the first 2 issues of Kirby's Eternals, and essentially the plot of that revolved around the Celestials impending return to Earth to judge their experiment after centuries. The movie appears to be following suit.

Looks almost a little like a disaster movie vibe to it and Salma Hayek is always a win.

The BIG question.
Will Ikea use this trailer/Film to sell their Fall Collection?
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE DEVIANTS!

It'll be epic, for sure, however I hope they don't follow the comic route where...
It turns out they were put here to essentially wipe out humanity, and in an effort to save us, they all commit suicide. That would truly be a sucky way to see these characters pass up on the big screen.

So do we know who's voicing the evil deviant Kro?

Because....

he sounds a bit like Diego Luna

Still not feeling this. It seems they are trying way too hard to put in these Marvel humor moments at the end of both trailers. Iuno how I feel about Ikaris being basically a Superman expy in this though.

Seems pretty accurate.

"We were instructed not to interfere."
"By who?"

Which is part of the trailer that I find most effective. If you want the Non-Interference position to be suitably sympathetic, you need a good reason for them to do so. "Because the scary ass Space God that made us told us so" works as a very tangible and comprehensible reason, before you dive into the more ambiguous philosophical ones. Especially since the earlier movies have well established that the Celestials operate on a scale where their disapproval can and has wiped out entire planets.

So I guess you want all Superhero movies to have human born heroes to have no feelings? Because humor is a feeling we all have. If regular humans can laugh and make jokes, why can't enhanced humans do the same? This is the one part of the Superhero movie fandom I do not get.....they hate that the superhero characters even smile and joke when we as regular humans do it everyday. Why is that anyways? Why is it that fans of comic book movies get in a tizzy that superheroes can laugh and joke in a movie? Can someone explain that to me?

Very good trailer and I'm definitely seeing it in theaters. For the most part, this looks like the most controlled well directed of the Marvel films in a long time in terms. But there's some shots and moments that give me pause to that it might have some of that Marvel-ness to it. The pre-viz shots with no director involvement and that humor. God, I ****ing hope Zhao can transcend the Marvel template.

Didn't Gunn debunk this notion?

It's not humor inherently (though yes, you do have the obnoxious fans who do think that and would be happy if things were dark and humorless) it's that quippy Marvel formula that's now permeated all Marvel movies where you can guess where it's going to land like clockwork. It's all very same-y. Worst of all, the quips and humor oftentimes undermine the drama as if Marvel is afraid to get too serious.

It started with classic Whedon quipping in the first Avengers. And while that was done well and very Whedon, Marvel afterwards just used that as their template. I think what we're asking for is if Marvel just backed off and used humor when appropriate the type of humor and usage of the humor being so formula.

Didn't Gunn debunk this notion?

I've no idea. But if you can show me the quote, I'd be interested in reading that.

I think you misunderstood me. I have no problem with humor, Marvel or otherwise. Those little stingers at the end of Shang-Chi's trailers with abomination and the exchange with Shang-Chi and Awkwafina's character? Totally fine. It's just something about how Eternals is doing it feels just way too try hard. Not sure if it's bad execution or whatever, but both humor stinger scenes from both trailers felt like some parody of a Marvel film from an SNL skit.

I get it now.

I wasn't as surprised by the amount of humor in the two Ant Man movies because of the filmography of Paul Rudd. Look at most of the movies he's done before Ant Man. They were largely comedies like Anchorman, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Dinner for Schmucks, so it's something he's used to (although the latter was quite moronic). Also the filmography of Taika as well, so the amount of humor in Thor: Ragnarok was not surprising.

Mmm. I'm still not feeling this one.
Gonna see it, of course, but doesn't look appealing at all to me.

Also, aren't Deviants also supposed to be an offshoot of humans? I'd expected them to look more in line with Thano's design jus based on comics, but they went with some generic alien beast thing...

Now maybe its just me, but I definitely feel like Disney/Marvel have another potentially great movie on there hands here and are hiding alot of stuff from these trailers.

The trailers for Shang Chi didn't do that movie justice at all and they actually kept quite a bit of stuff out of it which you will understand once you see the movie.

I atleast hope that's the same case here, because Shang Chi ended up being pretty great and I want that kind of momentum to continue going into this and NWH.

No, Deviants are the first race created by the Celestials. Not an offshoot of humanity

I think it will depend on the reviews for the movie.

Looks like another MCU movie with a villain problem honestly. Thought we were past this.

This trailer wasn't really doing a lot to develop the Deviants, but I think we might be getting a Skrulls type misdirect where they will turn out to be victims and Arishm will be the true villain. But I think there is gonna be an interesting swerve somewhere in this story.
