Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

Looking at the Dune picture you posted, IMAX looks more fullscreen (1:90:1 and 1:43:1) to me than widescreen. I also don't consider IMAX's aspect ratio/s as the standard widescreen aspect ratio.

Looking at the Dune picture you posted, IMAX looks more fullscreen to me than widescreen. I also don't consider IMAX's aspect ratio as standard widescreen aspect ratio.

widescreen (noun) - A screen with a wider aspect ratio than the ordinary 35-millimeter frame, making more effective use of the human field of view and producing a more immersive view experience.

widescreen (adjective) - Filmed in a greater aspect ratio than the 1.33:1 or 1.37:1 aspect ratio.

In the case of Dune the 1.43:1 is the closest to a fullscreen (1.33:1). But not the middle one. Just because a movie fills your widescreen TV does not mean it's fullscreen.

Again, it looks more fullscreen/Tvish to me than the standard widescreen aspect ratio used for most theaterical films. I'm not going to look up, whats the official definition of widescreen. I'm commenting on what I see.

i prefer 2:40:1 - the standard widescreen aspect ratio (most mcu movies have this anyway) so lets just leave it at that.

I dont think watching a movie the 1st time on my phone. But rewatches, sure

Reposting this here, since it is speculation. It is about Ego being a Celestial.
I didn't really like that ego was changed to a celestial in gotg, but I think I might be able to connect ego to the celestials.
In eternals annual it is mentioned that Celestials are Uni-minds of entire planets encased in armor. Ego,at least the MCU ego, could be a uni-mind he just didn't dawn any celestial armor. Maybe he doesn't fully understand himself. He does have the same desire as the celestials do in this movie which is to spread their seed to all the planets to make more celestials. Ego says he doesn't know where he came from, maybe his armor was cracked and just his uni-mind was floating in space. Ego might have fought galactus when ego was a fully encased celestial, then galactus destroyed his armor and he just kept floating in space as a uni-mind. Just a theory

I loved this. Like something out of Final Fantasy or Evangelion.

The more that I read about the movie, the more I think I will like it. I’m still waiting for it go on Disney+ to see it, probably sometime in January.

Seen it, and really really liked it :applaud
Exactly what I was hoping for. Beautiful landscapes and interesting story development in an epic setting.
Though I can understand some of the criticisms, I think it doesn’t deserve all the negative reviews.
Decide for yourself - for me it’s definitely a Top 10 movie

When I ranked this in the other MCU thread in the Marvel Film Forum, I think I put this as like 12th, but i found this movie more thought provoking than many MCU movies, so I think this would be in my top 10 MCU. I am going to try and see it again this weekend. If I can get the time.

Yeah, it's a hard one to place isn't it? Like I feel like I can see why many think Shang-Chi is the better movie, yet it took me about a day or two of reflecting on Shang-Chi to weigh up how much I liked it. Eternals I was thinking about it non-stop for the next 24 hours after seeing it.

So it's weird because I know, from a technical stand point, I can see the objective criticisms people have with this film, and why it can't stand right along side some of the more technically solid Marvel films... And yet, this one definitely affected me in a way that many of the Marvel films don't.

I think I will maybe always value a flawed film that makes me think and feel things than a technically strong film that plays it safe most of the time?

Another thing that really sets the 2 movies (this and Shang-Chi) apart are the finales.

Shang-Chi for 95% of the movie has this great martial arts action and awesome fight scenes, but once the monster is freed at the end, the final battle becomes so much less cool than the action in the rest of the movie. It is just Shang-Chi and Xialing not doing anything and riding a dragon most of that final fight. Such a downgrade from the amazing martial arts.

Eternals for me had a more satisfying finale. Not so much in terms of coolness of action, but it was so character driven and I found myself really absorbed into the final battle in a way I sometimes am not with Marvel films. Almost everything in the final fight is driven by character, and it makes every moment so much better.

Also even though Eternals was probably way too long... I came away feeling like a much shorter film like Shang-Chi still had more filler? Like you could cut stuff from Eternals, but every scene kinda had a purpose. It almost felt like a directors cut. Shang-Chi, although I loved it, suffers a bit from some crowbarred in fight scenes and honestly you could cut Trevor's scenes out completely and the movie would still work.

Yeah, Shang Chi totally lost me in the third act. I'm tired of all the chaotic action scenes where the characters are lost in a sea of CGI incontinence.
In Eternals OTOH the characters were front and center, despite the ostensibly much bigger scale and purpose.

Saw this opening night and although I found it more enjoyable than Black Widow and Shang-Chi, it still reminded me of Marvel Phase I days. This would have worked better as a Disney+ series or a different story that only focused on the Eternal's creation and their relationship with the Celestials.

I saw it yesterday and rather liked it. My take on the poor reviews was the pacing and editing didn't really fit the norms. They tried to do an awful lot with mixed results. The story was quite good and the twists were interesting. I'm reminded a little bit of Avengers:AoU (which I actually liked quite a bit). It was just a lot more disjointed than most MCU movies and tried to bring out more from the (many) characters than Marvel typically does.

I read reviews saying Barry Keoghan's accent was bad and now I'm insulted after seeing the film as an Irish man. :D

Barry was just doing a pretty even if not sterilized Dublin accent to make it easier to understand. No difference between that and Madden doing his natural accent.

I saw it and I enjoyed it, but there was something missing and I can’t totally put my finger on it. There was just a bit of disconnect at times. For example Sersi felt more human at the beginning than at the end when the stakes were highest.

It’s a funny movie to try and rate so I get the mixed reception.
