The Expanse

So let me get this straight. They cancel Dark Matter out of the blue without any satisfying ending. They renew Killjoys in spite of a lackluster season 3. And then they cancel Expanse in spite of its popularity and quality.

Syfy doesnt deserve these shows. Bunch of cheap ignorant *****ebags.

I think they greenlighted more Killjoys because they think Hannah John-Kamen's career is on the rise with roles in Tomb Raider, Ready Player One and Ant-Man & The Wasp.

They are most likely gambling that a rise in profile will bring them more eyes on her TV show.

Syfy also co-produce Killjoys.

Dark Matter was cancelled for the same reason The Expanse is. The show is not owned or produced by Syfy which means they have limited means on monetizing it.

Drak Matter co-creator Mallozzi posted about the reasoning for the cancellation on his blog
“Working against us was the fact that we weren’t a SyFy original. We were an acquisition," he revealed. "For those not in the know, an original is a series that is developed by the network and, more importantly, owned by the network, allowing them to monetize the show through things like international sales, streaming, etc. The network pays a lot more but presumably reaps the benefits down the line.”

Mallozzi went on to say that he pitched a much shorter final season to Syfy to wrap up the story, which was left on a cliffhanger. Unfortunately, they weren't interested in doing that.

If Hannah's career does take off she probably isnt going to have time or be inclined to stay with Killjoys. At best her increased star power will demand a higher salary. Syfy are too cheap to do that so they will probably lose her and end up canceling killjoys.

And while I know Syfy doesnt own Expanse and Dark Matter, those shows and 12 Monkeys are about the only decent shows they have. Just having those shows on their network would be good for the network's reputation and draw viewers to the channel. 12 Monkeys is ending this season, Dark Matter is canceled, Expanse is canceled, Killjoys will probably be lucky if it gets 2 more seasons. It's like Syfy cant think beyond their immediate greed for ad space revenue.

I'm just sick of this ****. I find a good scifi show and Syfy kills it before it's time.

Syfy being Syfy aka horrible which is why I can't bring myself to watch any of their shows until after they pass 2-3 seasons.

What kinda' fool wouldn't renew this series? It's probably (easily) one of the better sci-fi shows out there at the moment.

Compared to the numbers that major networks get, the ratings for The Expanse are pretty low. Granted, this isn’t a fair apples-to-apples comparison. But as per Deadline:

The cancellation decision by Syfy is said to be linked to the nature of its agreement for the series, which only gives the cable network first-run linear rights in the US. That puts an extraordinary amount of emphasis on live, linear viewing which is inherently challenging for sci-fi/genre series which tend to draw the lion share of their audiences from digital/streaming.

IOW, a lot of earnings come from secondary markets - which go to the producers and not Syfy. What Deadline didn’t mention was how any another “network” (that might pick-up/save The Expanse) would get a better deal . :thf:

This is Syfy's fault.

Syfy seems to want maximum revenue from shows that they themselves are too cheap produce.

Killyoys is only going to run for five seasons. Syfy renewed the show for the other two seasons when the third one ended. Hannah John-Kamen is most likely already locked into a contract for the two seasons so her salary isn't up for renegotiation.

Syfy also has Krypton and The Magicians which seem to be doing ok and have an audience.

Syfy should buy the U.S rights to Stan Lee's Lucky Man.

Glad to hear that the show will continue on as it's definitely a great show!

Well I'm most definitely pleased by the fact that Syfy are apparently going to get shat on, and that this show will get picked up elsewhere - hopefully Netflix. It deserves to be saved, although I am surprised by the low ratings. I'd have thought science-fiction fans would be all over this.

Holy crap. I hope another network pick it up.
That is my favorite scifi show currently.

Netflix was reported to be making more Science fiction and fantasy content because it does well for them so I could see them possibly being interested in picking up The Expanse.

Yup.

Sci-fi and fantasy are dominating Netflix — and subscribers can expect a lot more in the future

The marketing and promotion for the show is almost non-existent. I'm not too surprised it gets overlooked despite the acclaim from critics and audiences that do watch it.

I suppose I don't care which company buys it as long as the same creative team is retained.

.

Sounds like Monday/Tuesday is the deadline, Ive heard Netflix are out, however Amazon are showing some interest

WTF? If its Alcon's show and they want to continue the show why the **** are they allowing the sets to be destroyed and selling the assets Tuesday?! Ffs, they could give it a little more time to find a new distributor.

Star Trek Discovery and The Expanse are both filmed at Pinewood Studios Toronto.

Star Trek is such a huge production that it takes up most of Pinewoods studio space when it films which is why Pinewood Toronto is expanding.

Not surprised Star Trek is buying up the sets. It is probably cheaper to by a bunch of sets from another science fiction show filmed at the studio then building a bunch of new ones from scratch. The Matrix recycled a bunch of sets from Dark City.

Anyone that's interested, you can preorder the season 3 bluray on amazon. They wont charge you until it ships and it doesnt ship until July so you have plenty of time to cancel it. Even if you dont plan on keeping the preorder. It's a way to show support for the show. Support that Amazon can clearly see.

I hate this. Such barely gets media attention. And the Expanse has brought all of this. Well this and stupid Sharknado

I'd hope they could get an emergency 4th season of Netflix commits to multiple seasons.

100% done with SyFy after this. I hope to god Amazon can save this. It deserves so much better.

Thanks. Pre-ordered.

Come on, Amazon. If this doesn't get saved, and I'm cancelling my pre-order and buying from Best Buy out of spite, lol.

It would be about time Amazon does something right. Everyone should email Jeff Bezos.

I thought Netflix would have grabbed this - shame on them for not doing so. C'mon Amazon! You know you want too!!!

Well there isnt much time for Alcon or Netflix or anyone to negotiate any kind of good deal. Starting today the sets are being demolished and the assets are being sold to CBS for star trek discovery. It's hard to sell a show for lots of money when you've only got a few days to do it. Netflix would have wanted to hammer out the details of the buy and the future distribution of the show and there just wasnt time for that. I'll be really really surprised if Amazon or anyone saves this show.

We just went through this with Dark Matter last season. Because of other international deals in place already Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. . were unable to get exclusivity. And US rights alone was not worth it to them. That SyFy owns a piece of the international Killjoy pie keeps it in production to fulfill the 5 years story.

This is seriously unfortunate news, as - as I've stated above somewhere, this was one of the better sci-fi shows on the market at the moment, not because it was simply sci-fi, but because (I felt) it was very character driven. It doesn't seem though, if the sets are indeed being taken down, that there's any hope for it's survival, which is a damn shame.

:(

It wasnt just one of the better ones. Its afaik the best reviewed scifi show on all of television. It got consistently high reviews that any show regardless of genre, would have been proud of.
