The Expendables 2 - Part 2

thiswas filmed as a PG13 movie. so the R rating means nothing .

Let me guess, you read what Harry Knowles wrote on AICN? The same Harry Knowles who later e-mailed Stallonezone to say something along the lines of "Well, I assumed it was only shot as a PG-13 because Chuck Norris is a PG-13 guy".

But of course you'd know better than the stunt woman who actually worked on the bloody film.

You... you give me heartburn. You really do.

I was going to this either way, but I sure am glad they're going with the R rating. That can only be a good thing.

EX2 definitely is back on my must-see list this year if the news of it being rated R is true. Wonder if there's going to be any reshoots to film extra-violent footage to ensure the rating.

This R rating stuff is just so weird to me, I mean it's actually a deal breaker? it has to be bloody and violent? For me the hook of this is seeing a bunch of old timers onscreen together.

That and the bloody R rated violence that made it a throwback to the action films of the 80's, which the first one already did.

The idea of a bunch of more famous old 80's action stars in the same movie together combined with that R rated violence from their films back then makes it even more problematic for me. It was so promising when it started out. Now we have even more famous guys in this. We think we're going to get the same kind of smash mouth, awesome R rated 80's throwback like the first one, but perhaps better, then this happens.

If the first one was PG-13, I wouldn't have as much of a problem. But the fact it's inconsistent makes me have a problem with it.

I rewatched the first a few weeks ago and I forgot just how violent it is, which did indeed contribute to the enjoyment of the film. Alot of that same violence in all likelihood, won't be present in this. The inconsistency is what annoys me.

I'll still see it of course, and we will probably get the R rated or unrated cut DVD release or whatever, but I would have liked to see this on the big screen from what started out as something truly eventful after what the first did. How could you follow up with an even more promising kind of film when it's PG-13 after a first R rated one? It's very underwhelming.

Well, ****, I just read the page before and it went back to R? Is that confirmed and official?

So was it filmed with a PG-13 in mind or R?

The Raid is still my adrenaline pumping, balls to the wall, brutal R rated action pic of the year.

Filmed with R I imagine, Stallone said that there will be an unrated version just like last time so I bet they shot it the way they wanted first.

I like gravy with my chips.

Seeing the cast together is one thing, but if you were to take away, violence of EX1 and leave it to the thin story, bad one liners and haphazard editing (Simon West being guilty of the same things in his films), all I would have left would be the cast and I can look at the poster and save $10 if I wanted that.

As far as I'm concerned, these guys became famous in violent R-rated films. Die Hard, Terminator, Rambo, Crank, Universal Soldier, etc. So for all these action legends to be in one film, and for that film to not be as close in spirit to the stuff that made them famous in the first place wouldn't be right at all.

Plus I hate when a film is R-rated and then its sequel is PG-13.

This sums up my entire view on the whole rating thing. I'm going to the damn movie regardless of the rating. It can be just as action packed and awesome without gore and F-bombs. R rated or PG-13, doesn't matter to me. I'll be there opening day.

Rather than quote all you guys this will just be my response, personally I think a lot of R rated movies use the violence as a crutch and are weak without it. If a movie is R because of theme and tone like Alien, that is different.

I didn't care what rating this movie got I just wanted to see the big 3 in action together, the rest are B and C level guys I could care a less about.
The key is if the action is well framed and shot, not if blood splatters everywhere and limbs fly off IMO. I've seen countless action movies and an R rating has never made one better for me.

The thing that I found odd was the toys out the pram attitude when it was going to PG-13, it just felt like the most important thing was blood and guts to some.

Exactly. EX2 needs to be R rated, with some violence, blood and some foul language involved.

I've watched so many R rated films over the years in a theater only to catch the edited versions some time later on basic cable (the equivlent of PG-13) and, more often than not, the end-result was laughable. There is a certain spirit you're taking away when you cut-off a film's nuts like that.

It's really not the individual elements (blood, gore, swearing) in-and-of themselves, I just need for a film to be true to its own nature. This cast is full of big, grizzled, swinging d**ks with guns, they're not gonna just yell "look out!" every time something blows up or is fired 5 feet from their faces. I don't need any of those elements to love a film, I simply prefer authenticity toward the universe they've established whenever possible.

It's like CLoverfield: there is no way on earth a giant, rampaging monster is tearing through an urban city (New York at that) without "f**k!" being every other word out of everyon's mouth -- including the little kids. It takes me out of the moment as much as scenes in strip clubs where no one strips, or a woman who's just had sex or is alone in bed inexplicably sits up and covers her chest. No one does that.

This isn't a Prometheus, or an Inception, or a Dark Knight, or a Marvel film. Hell, it's not even a Terminator 2 or a Die Hard. It wont be discussed, or analyzed, or thought about, or taken seriously after it's over. It's not about the story, or a contemplation on the complexities of life. It doesn't have to be. It's a glorified living meme. It's a Rambo 2, a Commando, a Crank, a Bloodsport. It's about sweaty big biceped mid-air arm wrestling, violence, it's about explosions and walking away from them in slow motion, the film's bad guy is literally named Villain for God's sake.

"They felt it was overkill, and I said, “Really, you need overkill.”’ -Ridley Scott, 1999

Can we at least agree if this cast signed onto Inception 2, or Dark Knight 4, then, PG-13 will be just fine? I don't want to sound like I'm thumping the horn of mindless entertainment, but really, that's the only reason this film exists.

Uhm, I think GR2 has a quite healthy box office actually.

What's your definition of healthy? The 1st one wasn't looked at as that much of a success and this one has made less, more than half as much domestically and only a little better internationally.

No idea. I usually skim the box office mojo weekend reports on Mondays that said GR2 was doing good. I've learned long ago not to get worked up with the box office of a film, not to mention, I can't stand threads where they only discuss a film on financial terms. I'm not an accountant, I'm a cinema goer.
