The Gaming Lounge: Beyond - Part 7

The ending was my favorite part. The gameplay was my least favorite.
Oh really? I enjoyed being a silent predator or even going guns blazing was pretty fun. Now that I've had some time to think about the ending I like it a bit better. I've got a lot of respect for naughty dog for going with an ending that wasn't exactly a storybook ending. Did you think the gameplay was too repetitive?

I thought it was repetitive, awkward, and frankly just not fun. ND took the Uncharted shooter base and then tried to build stealth and melee kills around it, and it just didn't work for me. One example that comes to mind was how it's impossible to hurt Clickers without a weapon, yet it's also impossible to quick-kill lesser enemies with bare hands if you have a shiv. I'd often find myself using up my shiv's uses early on in a stealth section, then being totally unprepared when several Clickers showed up later. Granted, that got better over time as you collected more supplies and upgraded the durability of weapons, but it was still a frustrating and kind of stupid mechanic in the first place.

Keep in mind that I don't generally like stealth games too much to begin with, so I'll freely admit that I'm biased. But to me pretty much every single second of the actual gameplay was just an irritating slog to get to the next bit of utterly wonderful story for me.

I confess that I still haven't even played one minute of the Last of Us. :(

I've been avoiding spoilers for months now.

So, I just read apparently Monster Hunter 4 sold 2 million in 4 days in Japan. Crazy.

Just in Japan? Wow!

River City Ransom Gets An Officially Sanctioned Sequel Through Kickstarter. September 17, 2013 . 3:25pm

River City Ransom Underground will take place some 25 years after the original title, with returning main characters Alex and Ryan against back-to-his-old-tricks Slick.

Hey! Remember River City Ransom? The classic 2.5D beat-em-up for the Nintendo Entertainment System game has garnered itself cult status over the years, and now, there’s an officially-approved Kickstarter underway for its sequel—River City Ransom: Underground.

River City Ransom Underground will take place some 25 years after the original title, with returning main characters Alex and Ryan against back-to-his-old-tricks Slick. Like the original, RCRU will allow players to have a semi-sandbox experience by being able to select levels to explore and fight through, rather than a fixed route through the game.

Canadian Developers Conatus Creative’s sequel is in development for the PC and will still be in 2.5D—which means 2D with the ability to move into the background and foreground—and the developers have promised to beef up every aspect of the game. So, more characters, more stores to shop at, updated AI and skills to fight with and against. The game will also feature both local and online multiplayer for up to four players.

As mentioned, this is an officially-licensed and officially-approved sequel. Conatus picked the license up in April from Million Co., a company of ex-Technos staff who acquired the rights to the series when Technos disappeared into the ether. This means that, yes, Underground will be fully canon. It’s so canon, they have creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto on board as a creative consultant to stay true to what makes a River City game a River City game.

There’s also other big name talent on the team, such as Dustin Crenna (Sound designer for Halo 4, Bioshock 2, The Darkness 2 etc) and Rich Vreeland aka Disasterpiece (Who you might remember is also doing Hyperlight Drifter, that other Kickstarter game we highlighted) working on the team, and Conatus Creative have promised extra cash for the game will go towards hiring more staff to ensure the game gets done properly and on time.

Kickstarter exclusive weapon skins sound like a pretty sweet deal and nice compromise to those who dismay at locked-away content exclusives. As of print, the game is about halfway to funded and can be found here.

So, not only has Monster Hunter 4 sold that much in just a few days, but 3DS sales spiked up to nearly 300,000 in those days. There is no stopping the Japanese Monster Hunting machine.

So...Sega bought Index/Atlus.

Dark days, these are

The 3DS should have been totally integrated into the wii U (or the other way round). The wii U 2nd screen should have actually been the 3DS (with the base console if sold separately without 2nd screen or 3DS much cheaper). The console should probably be based on and named like the 3DS rather than the wii.

Yeah, I was partially joking. I'm not sure how I feel about Sega owning that property, especially since they're starting to take a policy of localizing a lot less games that are popular in Japan and not here (specifically their new stance on the Yakuza). I hope they don't take that kind of stance with licenses Atlus may own, specifically the Shin Megami Tensei ones.

The Wii U is a home console, not a handheld. So, why would they have modeled it after the 3DS as opposed to the Wii, which was their last console and most successful one ever?

Also, here's some interesting stuff that Nintendo is doing with Wii Fit U:

Nintendo is offering Wii U owners a chance to download a full version of Wii Fit U for free. Starting Nov. 1, Wii U owners can download a complete version of the game and get a head start on their New Year's fitness goals by trying out all the activities found in the game for a full month - at no cost. All users need is a Wii Balance Board and a Wii U system with a broadband Internet connection. Consumers can keep their trial copies of Wii Fit U at no additional cost by simply purchasing and syncing a Fit Meter to the game

The Fit Meter will be $19.99.

The Wii U is a home console, not a handheld.
I know :yay:
So, why would they have modeled it after the 3DS as opposed to the Wii, which was their last console and most successful one ever?
I mean built from the ground up with the intention of integration with 3DS like the XB1 has been with the Kinect 2. The wii was the most successful console but a massive chunk of that success was sales to one shot casuals who haven't previously and won't buy again till something equally novel from a games point of view comes up. With its unambitious gaming specs it wasn't exactly thinking of the future of gaming consoles when it was conceived and this is more evident now that the successor doesn't have the casual numbers.

I was saying all this when the wii was so successful and as an owner, not just recently since the wii U has been doing badly. There should be a big incentive for 3DS users to purchase a wii U over any other console (& particularly when the wii U was 1st out of the gate with no other next gen consoles available for a year) and even if only a fair chunk of them did, there wouldn't be too many problems for wii U.

Top quality Nintendo games are a constant across all Nintendo consoles but there's no reason a Nintendo console can't be on par with PS4 & XB1 & cater to those who want to play the latest multiplatform blockbuster as well as their Mario/Zelda games and linking properly with the most successful handheld would give a big advantage.

Well, multiplat games are probably not going to happen anyway, due to the power differences. Wii U is more of an in-between console, stronger than the PS3/360, but not up the Bone/PS4 level, so multiplat games would require more work.

But they've done the linking thing before, particularly with the GC and GBA, and it didn't work out that well in helping the GC. I'm assuming you mean this as an optional thing, because to make it mandatory, I think, would kind of be a disaster. I don't think people would respond all that well to having to buy two different pieces of hardware to play games. Plus, the 3DS has two screens already, meaning this fusion would bring about three screens...and developers barely use the two screen dynamic worth anything as is. I think it's one of those ideas that kind of sound good until you start really thinking about it.

As an in-between console the wii U might have been able to do something if had been released earlier in between the generations. 2009 for eg. I kind of think Nintendo's next console should be a proper in betweener ending the wii U after a respectable 5 years or so. It would need to be definitively more powerful than PS4 & XB1 and more on par with pcs of the time.

I didn't know about the GC GBA link and the GBA was very successful so you have a point. Of course it would depend on how good and how intuitive the integration was and there would have to be a real reason for 3DS users to either want the console or it should even just be something where you can use the 3DS or some version of it on your TV as a console.

The 2nd screen for wii U I think needs to be dropped as it's taking too long to gain traction and every day that passes it becomes less likely of ever becoming a success. Meanwhile it's forcing the price of the wii U to remain within viewing distance of the PS4 when it should be so much lower that it's out of sight.

I agree it's an idea that sounds good and is probably 200 times more complicated to actually implement and may not work out for technical reasons I could never foresee. Just thinking out aloud as for me the connected universe of equipment has always appealed. When I got my ipod & iPhone back then I soon wanted an iMac. Now that I'm invested in Xbox & a gaming pc I've moved to Windows Phone. And if I was focusing on PS3 & PS4 I'd definitely buy a Vita. If I owned a 3DS I'd then want to own a Nintendo console and it would just take an incentive to make me get one. I know many don't think like that but Apple in particular have been good at incentivising this kind of brand loyalty across different types of products.

People are just worried how this will affect a new Persona. Sega hasn't exactly been responsible for a lot of quality stuff the last decade.
I was initially worried, but I said to my if Sega somehow picked up the money to buy them and that dev studio seems to make money indepently on their own they should both be fine. And Sega will only make money and be in the best place cause of it. Sega will benefit the most from the deal.

Sega have been responsible for some **** on consoles this gen but I thought they'd turned over a new leaf on pc recently?

If they did it wasn't overly noticeable they still make money. But yeah in recent times what people know about them is that they aren't doing too well and they had to let some studio's like platinum games go. This studio with how they've done will put them in a better place. As long as what happened with alpha protocol doesn't happen that is. I hope that studio is left to run autonomously what the deal Disney has to marvel and some of the anime outlets it has. There are some people at sega that seem to sink some ip's for dev studio there.

and it looks like that will be the case. For now.
A Message From Atlus To Their Fans, Following Their Acquisition By Sega. September 18, 2013 . 8:53pm

“Currently, the employees of the consumer game business, are working zealously on future releases, and are vigorously looking forward to taking on new challenges,” says Atlus’ Naoto Hiraoka.
Earlier today, it was made official that Sega have acquired Index Corporation, the parent company of Atlus. Many fans have shared their concern regarding the acquisition, but the director of Atlus’ consumer software department, Naoto Hiraoka, looks forward to a brighter tomorrow.

Hiraoka shares the following message for fans on Atlus’ official websitehttp://www.atlusnet.jp/:

Dear customers,

We are very grateful to have your continued support for our products.

Today, as announced through investor relations, we will be continuing our business as part of the Sega Sammy group, starting on November 11th. As you may know, Index Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection on June 27th, and have looked to transfer their business to other companies.

Above all, we, Atlus corporation, have had our consumer game business supported by an exceptional amount of fans. Regardless of the business itself rising to a much favorable position in recent years, lately, we have caused concern to our customers, to whom we deeply apologize.

We’ve traditionally maintained strong relations with Sega Corporation, using consumer game business as the main pillar. This time, we expect to maintain the relationship, while achiveing better business synergy. By using Sega’s strong circulation network, we look forward to further expanding our development. In terms of consumer games expertise, this relationship will be mutually benefitial for both sides. It is about the deep acknowledgement of wanting to further raise our brand.

We feel that our ongoing business is in very good shape, and it brings us great pleasure to be able to report our continuing business, here, today. This has been made possible thanks to your patronage and support. On behalf of all the employees, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

Currently, the employees of the consumer game business, are working zealously on future releases, and are vigorously looking forward to taking on new challenges. In the near future, we will be reporting our ongoing situation through the media, so please expect further developments.

Director of consumer software department

I'm currently playing Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. What the 'eff is at the bottom of the pit?! This is Uncharted all over again. First it's just shooting and blowing **** up all the time, then I end up in a dark place with things running around. I hate that! :argh:

Hopefully that's followed by a Steam box announcement.

Im definitely more interested in a Console Steam then that

This is bigger news because it would provide a viable, non-Windows OS that's optimized for gaming and free. A Steam Box would just be a package this comes in.
