The Guns thread - Part 1

Not necessarily. Say three big, unarmed-but-with-violent-intentions guys break into your home and start tying up, or attacking, or raping, whatever, your family. You're not going to be able to stop that with kitchen knives or a baseball bat or whatever.

I don't own, but the home defense argument's a valid one.

I think three ARMED guys breaking into your house is a far more likely scenario, and you're ****ed in that situation.

With both scenarios still being quite rare.

Scott Derrickson almost had that scenario play out, but he had a gun too. Guns for home security is valid, but I fail to see how one would need an AR 15 for that.

A 12 gauge pump action is probably your best overall home security option. It's stop anybody in their tracks while not sending stray round days into your neighbor's house.

And in the "they're unarmed" situation?

You're still, as a single person, not going to be able to stop them without a firearm. Even one-on-one in some cases it's going to be iffy.

Obviously that doesn't necessarily dictate an AR being necessary, a handgun or a shotgun's doing to do it. But if other people feel differently on that and want an AR for it, I guess provided they have no criminal or psych history I'm fine with that.

In that situation that's probably never going to happen even if I lived five lifetimes, yes I would be powerless. Like I said, there are little to no guns in my country and we're doing just fine. Nobody is shaking in their boots because someone may break in and rape them.

Nobody here's shaking in their boots, either, it's a rare thing that's probably not going to happen.

I think it was Bill Maher who said something to that effect recently: "I don't want a gun, but if anything ever did happen, I'm going to want one rather than not having one."

That's all it is. I don't know which country you're from, or what crime rates are, whatever, it doesn't really matter. A responsible adult with no crim or psych history, wanting one for that 1% chance anything ever happens so they can keep their wife & kids safe - fine. I don't see the need for one in my situation, relatively safe area, but other people get to assess that differently too. If they want a weapon, responsibly stored away from kids, in a home without any legally/clinically-defined crazies - go for it.

Dick's Sporting Goods is going to stop selling assault type guns as well as high capacity magazines. They are also raising the age to buy a gun to 21 in their stores. I can't wait for all the "freedom" types to attack them.

WOW.......

I don't think Cabela's will ever do that....Academy might...

How many of the mass shooters thus far have had a criminal record? 1 that I know of......and the military did not do their job and get that transferred once they went into civilian life. ONE........... psych history?????? actual psych history????? 1 Aurora, Colorado shooting.... Schizophrenia normally does not show itself until the early 20's.... people that are depressed normally shoot themselves....voices show up early 20's.

So, the background check (yes should be strengthened) but that and psych history are not going to even put a dent in this.... more has to be done.

The Parkland shooting has put some necessary change in motion. Now it's up to whether the GOP majority can actually go against the NRA without wilting like a leaf.

Good for them.

Yeah, I really respect them for doing that, because that is going to cost them a ton of money.

I think the fact that the Parkland shooter bough a rifle from them, if not one used in the actual shooting, was a bit of a eye opener for the CEO.

Um, yes actually the reason why the US has so many guns circulating is because people are so afraid and are shaking in their boots. The society is paranoid.

Don't get me started on the 1% fallacy. Dick Cheney tried to use that as a justification for war against irrelevant countries. The same scrutiny can be applied here. Especially when you look at how many accidental shootings happen in a year.

It is absolutely terrifying to think that someone might make a mistake and be shot because a homeowner is paranoid. There have been gun owners on this site that have claimed they would shoot anyone who steps on their property without permission. I used to delivery pizza and would sometimes knock on the door of the wrong house at 9pm. In Canada, no big deal. In the US, who knows.

I wouldn't hold my breath. :(

He tweeted about it recently, and made the point that his shotgun was perfectly adequate. No AR-15 required.

True dat. A good pistol or shotgun is IMO vastly more superior for home security than an AR..
Heck when i was stationed in London, i saw a news report where some old gal, iirc in her 80s, had a tape recording of a pump shotgun being 'racked'. JUST that sound alone, caused 2 separate thug youths to vacate the premises after breaking in!!!

Strange, i went to ***** back in 2014 to get stuff for my bike. The ONLY firearms i saw in their firearm/hunting section were regular hunting rifles (.22,s 306s etc) and some shotguns. NOT A SINGLE AR in sight..
So IMO this article from ***** is just for 'feel good publicity'.

Maybe what's in stores varies fron region to region depending on demand.

They apparently stopped selling at Dick's after Sandy Hook but Feild And Stream, owned by Dick's still had them available. They are now stopping the sales company wide including Feild And Stream.

If we're going to raise the age limit to 21 to buy a gun, shouldn't we do the same for people wanting to join the military?

Benelli M4 would do the job.
