Horner's score was too generic and lacked any personality IMO. Zimmer is fine, but his selection as composer for TASM2 has me laughing. I remember when Elfman was selected for SM and everyone was going crazy and complaining because he had already done Batman and that he was no good for Spider-Man and that he'd done too many superhero movies (lol), etc... Now everyone is ecstatic about Zimmer who seems only to do Superhero and big action flick scores now. Fanboys baffle me.
Do you mean people in general or people at these boards?
If the latter, you couldn't be more wrong. I've mostly seen people being very skeptic at this choice here, especially fans of ASM. Most people even bring up the "issue" that Zimmer has already scored the other two big superheroes.
Also, while I haven't been along since the announcement of Elfman for Raimi's SM (and I doubt you were too), I've been around here for a pretty long time now and I have never heard about Elfman scoring too many superheroes as an issue. The complaints I read were that they simply didn't enjoy his score and that it used choirs too much.
It's very clear that you're grasping for straws in an attempt to mock fans of this film.
Anyways, my views on this is that I'm very happy about these news. I think Horner had a very good score to listen to while not watching the film. That is, simply pretty cool music. But I don't think he brought much to the film itself except for the more intimate parts and the main theme (which I love). The action scenes felt out of place with his music and some other stuff felt odd.
Zimmer is IMO one of the best composers out there to capture and create tension, excitement and other feelings and make scenes raise in quality. I don't care that he's not a theme composer, because I think what he brings to the films are more important, melding the music with the scenes in an almost perfect way.
The best option IMO would be for him to score most of the music with his own ideas but keeping Horner's main theme. However, he should add and give the main theme his own touch to fit in with the rest and make it more epic and tense. Because while I love Horner's main theme, I also think that it sounds pretty thin.
