Watched Insidious 2 the other night, I wasn't impressed. I liked the first one (even though it was basically an updatd version of Poltergeist) enough to want to see the second one. It started off OK but it got progressivly worse as it went on and unlike the first one (for about an hour) it wasn't scary at all. The backstory stuff was interesting but it didn't really go anywhere.

I know they're making a 3, most notably by the terrible ending teaser but I really think they should leave it.

Does anyone listen to any horror audio dramas? I recently got into them due to listening to Doctor Who audios. I've mostly listened to a few Lovecraft ones.

I listen to old radio shows like Inner Sanctum, Dark Fantasy, Suspense etc. Some of the episodes are creepy...

Suspense had an adaptation of The Dunwich Horror, it's from 1945. I listened to it late at night on my ipod, and fell asleep...I was awakened by a scary voice saying "Yog-Sothoth"! I almost crapped my pants, and it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest...:hehe:

Also the Drabblecast does readings and productions of stories from many really good contemporary horror and scifi writers.

So Oculus...I'd give it a 6/10. It felt extremely meh to me. It had some good build up but I saw the ending coming a mile away. It has its moments, but I'd save it for a rental. I did like it more than The Conjuring though.

Saw it yesterday and agree with your post, except I liked The Conjuring more. :oldrazz:

I found the ending really annoying. Not the predictableness of it, but just the way it was pulled off. There was no impact to it, and when it happened, I didn't feel anything, except "that's it?!".

The movie really wasn't scary at all, or even "creepy" that much either, and lacked a lot of traditional horror-movie-style tension. It played more like a psychological drama than anything else, with a hint of the supernatural.

It also constantly flipped between kid & adult versions of the two leading characters (a brother & sister) throughout the second half, which was just confusing as heck and didn't seem to serve a purpose.

I do think it's somewhat comparable to Sinister, and anyone who liked that movie might probably like Oculus too.

Off topic but are you named Red Hawk after the anime?

Nah, I just like red-tailed hawks.

Its a screenname I started using over a decade ago, and it just kind of continued.

In a lot of my newer accounts I used AlanMorlock

Has anyone here seen The Innkeepers? Its not particularly scary by any means but more than any other horror film in recent memory it actually takes the time to establish and develop its characters. Though its a slow burn, I ended up really dreading anything happening to the leads. Very different experience from the usual As***le Abbattoir the genre usually offers up. It's on netflix, worth checking out.

Cool, I just wondered :woot:

Just watched The Machine, which is actually a sci-fi movie, but since there is no sci-fi thread, I figured I'd post about it here.

Basically, a guy is working with a military defense type company to develop AI robots in case of a hot war with China. He recruits a young girl who seems to have cracked the mystery of how to create AI, and of course, everything goes well and there are no problems at all with the AI. Nah, of course there are problems.

It's pretty good. It's a low budget, direct to VOD type thing, but looked good for the money they had. Caity Lotz from Arrow is in it. I doubt it would crack my top 5 favorites of the year if I hadn't almost exclusively watched crappy movies thus far. Man, there's gotta be some good movies coming out soon, right???

Just watched Antisocial (2014) a movie where a virus is making people attack others (but they aren't dead coming back to life...so it isnt technically zombies). I think it's pretty obvious what is causing the outbreak, but the movie seems to think its a mystery, so I won't spoil it here.

A couple of hotties are trapped in a house with three dudes during an outbreak in what was supposed to be a new year's eve party. Like many zombie type movies, this has a larger point to make and is using the outbreak to make it. I appreciate this sort of thing. Unfortunately, that larger point sure was telegraphed early and kind of on the nose. Also, it was padded out a bit to make it feature length, so some scenes just kind of go round and round to take up more time, when that time could have been put to better use. Sadly, one of the most emotional scenes in the film is carried by an actor who cant hold his own, so it comes off as silly. I did feel some tension there near the end at a certain scene, and I liked the lead actress (who I'd never seen before and doesn't have much of an imdb page), but then the very end kind of lost me a bit.

End result??? This seems to be a movie with a modest budget made by people who don't have a lot of experience (first time feature director), so it was better than I expected, while not as effective as they likely were going for. I've CERTAINLY seen worse zombie-type movies, but it was no 28 Days Later.

Just saw Oculus last night, and you know what? I really enjoyed the hell out of it. I was worried that the poster and TV spots were trying way too hard to overhype it, with quotes like, "One of the best Horror movies of the last decade", but while it doesn't quite live up to that quote, I'll say that the story itself (and the structure of the story) is pretty original and refreshing, and just the overall family drama at its core is very compelling.

The acting from the children is absolutely phenomenal - dare I say it, the best acting in the movie overall. I mean, these kids are unbelievable. And the main actress is great as well. (And am I crazy, or is Katee Sackoff looking more and more gorgeous with age?)

Really solid Horror movie in my opinion. 7/10

Also watched Contracted on Netflix. Man, talk about a movie with an AMAZING premise and with so much potential, and it doesn't quite live up to it. It's got to have one of the most intriguing and original takes on a zombie apocalypse ever, and it just misses the mark entirely. I'm crossing my fingers on a re-do with a larger budget, better make-up effects, and better acting, and if that movie is ever made, I think it's automatically one my favorite Horror movies of all-time.

I'm giving this a generous 5/10, only for it's overall premise. It's definitely worth checking out for that alone.

I definitely agree about Contracted. I thought the make-up was fine, but some of the acting was bad (especially the actress who played the mom), and some of what was required in the script...like everyone all but dismissing what was obviously a very serious problem...hurt the believability. Even the doctor, after watching her all but fall to pieces (literally) in front of him was like "You're a walking biohazard and a threat to everyone near you...have a nice day and come back some other time." I keep telling myself that this was all social commentary on how shallow we are (it took place in Los Angeles) but I'm not sure that the movie was that clever. Like...even the promo info talks about how she had a one night stand, but it was clearly a date rape...even though the character then treats it like a one night stand the entire rest of the film. Was this bad writing or am I supposed to assume that she blamed herself for the act and wanted to keep the info from her girlfriend so bad that even the promotional blurb for the DVD covered it up?

I watched Paranormal Activity: the marked ones and it was boring as hell.

I watched The Machine the other week. It was ok, I thought it was good for a low budget film but it wasn't very original. The film had elements of Blade Runner and just about every Anime film or tv show that features a sexy female robot.

The government bad guy is Denis Lawson aka Ewan McGregor's uncle and Wedge from the original Star Wars films.

How many Paranormal Activity movies have they made now? 87? I can't wait for Paranormal Activity 93: Out of Ideas

They ran out of ideas on the first one. I had to skip through it, it was so boring and unoriginal. I didn't bother with any of the three dozen sequels.

These Paranormal Activity films are cheap to make so it easy for them to turn a profit. There seems to be enough people willing to pay to see sequel after sequel of these films.

Maybe we should make our own Paranormal Activity? I can sleep while the camera is on, and you can slam the door a couple of times.
