The Horror Thread - Part 4

You haven't seen the original TCM? WOW, you really don't know what you're missing. It's one of the creepiest, most disturbing, and just flat-out insane movies that's ever been made. Heck it even creeped out Wes Craven when he saw it.

Not for lack of wanting. Things just seem to come up preventing it. I'm looking at this set as a way of changing that.

Just watched Would You Rather on Netflix.

It could have been an interesting movie, if it was edited better and had a stronger cast.

I haven't seen Sasha Grey in a lot (aside from you know what :cwink:) but she is pretty terrible in this and spends 99% of her role pulling some weird 'mean face' look.

I've been watching alot of Short Horror Movies online which have won short film awards and of course very low budget but still amazing! Alot of the time the suspense really brings you into the film and I like how it only goes for 5-10 minutes so its very fast paced but still engaging!

‘The Guest's’ Adam Wingard, Simon Barrett to Tackle ‘I Saw the Devil’ Remake.

You’re Next and The Guest team of Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard will bring the project to life. Barrett will write the script with Wingard at the helm while Snoot Entertainment’s Keith Calder and Jessica Calder (who worked with the pair on both You’re Next and The Guest) will produce with Adi Shankar (Dredd) and Spencer Silna.

Shankar previously spoke about the film saying “Kim Jee-woon’s ‘I Saw the Devil’ is perfect in so many ways. The intention is not to remake the film per se, but rather to ‘port’ it for international audiences.”

As long as they don't call it I Saw The Devil. :csad:

what are the names of these shorts? are they on youtube?

Bought three Hammer Horror films today. Got Horror of Dracula, Curse of Frankenstein, and Revenge of Frankenstein. I'm a Universal Horror guy, so I've never spent any time on the Hammer stuff, but I'm looking forward to it.

Watched April Apocalypse (2014), the least funny zombie comedy I've seen.

This loser dude has been best friends with the girl of his dreams since they were little kids. For some reason he doesn't ask her out, and even turns her down when she asks to kiss him. She moves away, and he regrets that he didn't get with her. After a period of depression (and a failed home based talk radio attempt) he decides to go find her. That's when the zombie apocalypse hits.

What's weird is that the guy is positioned as a loser. The entire film is pushed along by the fact that he is a loser. But every female we meet in the film (who isn't related to him) is attracted to him. That...doesn't make sense. Heck, the flashbacks show that this girl of his dreams spent their entire teenage years trying to get with him. It's just...an odd choice.

One guy PUNCHES a zombie to defeat it.

I think I giggled once during the film. The comedy falls completely flat at every turn.

So...zombie movies have messages about the real world, right? What's the message of this film? The one that is openly stated is that you keep fighting until there's nothing left worth fighting for. But is that a comment on society? Then again, this dude is depressed and meets with a psychiatrist who prescribes him drugs to help...and that comes into play later...so maybe the message is that Big Pharma is awesome and taking medication for depression can save your life? Eesh. No, I'm going with the idea that it's just a dumb indie attempt to cash in on zombie comedies being popular.

If you want to watch a new release zombie comedy, Life After Beth is better.

I have seen hellraiser for the first time. The way the characters look was really funny. I couldn't understand for the life of me why everyone seemed to be attracted to Julia. Larry was... not the most sympathetic dude, he wasn't mean or anything, but I couldn't get attached to him. Hopefully, Kirsti was nice. The story was interesting, and I wanna watch the sequels now. There were some great visuals, very memorable, some of the shots stayed with me. The gore was quite great too. I really enjoyed it.

I've also seen two horror anthologies from Hong Kong. The 2 parter tales from the dark. It's basically 6 short movies in 2 movies, by directors like Fruit Chan, Gordon Chan, or Teddy Robin. Even Simon Yam directed one. Those shorts are really uneven. I prefer part 1 over part 2. Simon Yam's movie, while not the best effort, had some great visuals (especially some shots of Hong Kong), and some really memorable scenes, like the fat ghost played by Lam Suet who was always on the verge of throwing up, but kept putting food in his mouth.

The short with Tony Leung and Kelly Chen was really more a comedy with a ghost. I liked it, maybe mostly because Tony Leung was in it. It wasn't anything special really, but it was never boring. The short by Fruit Chan ha d a great story, with some interesting deaths. It had maybe the best story, but it lacks some memorable visuals.

Gordon Chan's short was the only one that I found to be really boring. Which is a pity, because the story had great potential, but it spent too much time showing you boring stuff, and the real story came too late, and it ended too abruptly. Which is, again, really a pity, because it could have breen really good.

The short with the students spending the night in an old school was kinda fun, if a little in your face. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't memorable at all, and it reminded me too much of japanese horror movies.

Teddy Robin's short was one of the best. It was well shot, it had an engaging protagonist, a simple and yet effective story, and a climax that was totally crazy.

As much as I like the Universal Horror, I personally feel Hammer horror did a better job with them.

Watched Jersey Shore Massacre (2014)

This movie comes at least a few years after it should have. I mean...a Jersey Shore spoof in 2014??? I never watched the actual show, so if there are inside jokes that fans of the show would get, they went over my head. Otherwise, it isn't really that funny. I laughed a few times though.

The biggest problem here is that they seemed to have a 20 minute idea in a full length film. The result is TONS of padding as we wait for the killing to start. It's a simple premise...girls go on vacation, meet up with some guys, go back to their vacation house and get killed. But there are several needless stops and side missions along the way to fill time.

A movie like this should be absurd, and while it does have absurd moments, I wanted the characters to be even dumber and the situations more absurd than they were.

Alright here's my list so far, I need some more horror titles that are really good but a little bit obscure to the average viewer. Any suggestions?

Invasion of The Body Snatchers was such a great film; too bad the remake with Daniel Craig sucked.

Is that the one with Nicole Kidman as well? Never watched it because I heard it was so bad.

I love the one with Leonard Nemoy and Donald Sutherland though. I found it just so much creepier than the original black & white version.

The one from the late 80's/early 90's that takes place on an army base is okay, but not nearly as good as the Sutherland/Nemoy version.

I just bought some new DVDs to watch this October (actually, most of them are previously used, but they're new to my collection anyway).

I'll be doing as many classic monster movies as I can this month. Universal Horror and Hammer Horror will be my go-to franchises. I also bought a copy of Munster Go Home on DVD today. Pretty excited about that.

No problem. :yay:

I also love Zombi 2. The score by Fabio Frizzi is amazing and I think it's even a little underrated.
