The Horror Thread - Part 4

Just bought a DVD double feature of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre & The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

I know I tend to crap all over movie remakes on these forums, and especially those done by Michael Bay & Platinum Dunes. And I stand by my convictions that the originals are almost universally better than he remakes in every conceivable way. However, of all the horror remakes that Platinum Dunes has put out over he years, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the one I dislike the least.

The protagonists are all relatively likeable and relate able enough so that you can root for them throughout he movie, but not be so invested in them that you feel cheated when they die. It was well paced, and built up the tension and suspense admirably throughout the film. I liked he fact that they expanded Leatherfce's family of inbred homicidal rednecks to include the entire town, as that is more frightening than three inbred redneck men out in the middle of nowhere (in the remake they have female family members to breed with). And who could possibly dislike seeing Jessica Biel in those skintight jeans?

However, I still maintain that the movie's biggest failing was neglecting/glossing over the cannibalism aspect of the story. All they had to do was have them serve one of Jessica's friends for dinner during the scene where she wakes up tied to a dining room chair, and the movie would have been the perfect remake. Maybe have her recognize her friend's tattoo on the roast as Leathrface and his f**kd up family sit down to dinner, something like that. It worked in Wrong Turn 2, as well as 2001 Maniacs, and the TCM remake came out before either of them.

I absolutely will NOT spend any money on copies of Platinum Dunes' remakes of A Nightmare On Elm Street, or Friday The 13th though. And certainly not Rob Zombie's remakes of Halloween & Halloween 2. Those are all prime examples on how NOT to do a remake.

^^^^ How's TCM: The Beginning...never saw it...not because of reviews, bad word of mouth, just was never interested in that particular film but tempted just so I can say I finally saw it...since I've seen all the other ones.

And I agree with the cannibalism aspect, that little touch would have improved the film...so much more.

Ugh I hated TCM: The a Beginning, infact (contreversially) the only TCM film I like is the remake.

I enjoy all the films...I'll check it out.

IMHO, it's not bad but it's not great either. I think PD made The Beginning because they received so much flack over the cannibalism issue with their TCM remake that they felt the need to try and fix it. And in that respect, it does alright. I haven't seen it in years, so I don't quite recall how well paced it is, or how suspenseful. Now that I have it on DVD, I'll be able to rewatch it and give you a more accurate account. But from what I recall, it was okay. I guess some of the suspense is lost because it's a prequel, so you pretty much know that Leatherface and his f**ked up family are going to come out on top. But other than that, as I recall, it was okay.

R. Lee Eremy was the saving grace of TCM: The Beginning. It was ok overall, but he was one of the best parts.

In both movies actually. Since Leatherface can't/won't talk, it's a good idea to make his family memorable in that way, and he was excellent as always. His portrayal of the sheriff in both TCM movies is reminiscent of Robert England's portrayal of Freddy in The Dream Warriors, or the Colonel in 2001 Maniacs. Charismatic and fun to watch, but still menacing and creepy.

Blasphemy! You will burn in Hell for disrespecting the Horror Gods, you heathen!

Just kidding. Both films have their good points and bad points. The remake had a much bigger budget, and it shows. And as mentioned before, I like how the family includes the whole town, and isn't just three men out in the middle of nowhere (really, after a few decades the threat of the original family would be gone, while the new family can breed a whole new generation of psychotic killers by boning their aunts/sisters/cousins/mothers/whatever). I think the original had the better story, while the remake had better execution of their story. Like I said before, had they just served Jessica Biel her barbecued boyfriend for dinner in the remake, then it would have been perfect and I'd probably have liked it better than the original. But they didn't, so I say it was a nice try that ultimately failed.

No. I don't.

Isn't part of the legacy of that movie that we don't really know? It seems like whenever I see a zombie documentary, they make a point of mentioning how it just started without a real explanation. I'm not sure that it takes away from the movie (it'll always be a classic either way), but I do think it's important to make this a good movie, with social commentary, and if you're going to explain it, you better make it good.

Watched Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort (2014), and I didn't even know there was a part 5. Apparently, this is the third prequel in a row...is the back story THAT important? This one takes the origin in a whole new direction, so apparently it is.

As usual, I will discuss some story elements from the first third or so of the movie, and some themes in the film...

Some depressed dude and his annoying friends are visiting a spa/retreat type place that he's inheriting. We soon meet the creepy caretakers of the property, with the Wrong Turn cannibal killers just showing up occasionally to kill someone.

Movies like this generally require nudity...and pretty much every actress in the film shows some skin (except, thankfully, an old woman). There's a reason why many people are calling this Wrong Turn Sex. But it's kind of a creepy, voyeuristic type thing. The thing is...this just doesn't FEEL like a Wrong Turn movie. The franchise killers are basically just bit players in this new take on the concept.

The other essential for these types of films are the kills...and there are a few absurd kill scenes. I'm not sure they are believable, but who cares? It isn't like they have a massive budget, but they make use of what they have.

The story turns feel really forced and under-developed. People do things because the script tells them to, not because they actually have been shown to have reason to. And while plenty of time is devoted to that story, you'll have to be a true fan of this franchise to really care about it.

Overall...if you're watching Wrong Turn 6 then you know what you're getting yourself into. No one watches these movies expecting Citizen Kane. This one just takes the story in a freaky, kind of boring direction.

I thought it was pretty decent, although I wish there was more to it... something more supernatural because you had a couple of moments where it could go there.

Still waiting for that Child's Play reboot inspired by Don's original blood buddy script.

I can't wait to catch up on some new horror on VUDU. I plan to watch Horns , Life After Beth, See No Evil 2 , and The town that dreaded sundown remake.

So far I've watched:
Carrie (2013) ...... Pointless remake , doesn't have any of the creepiness of the original
The Monkeys Paw (2013)..........ok , it played like an extended takes from the crypt episode
Big Ass Spider...... Amusing but not as fun as I expected
Afflicted......this was good , especially the effects work . Nice that I watched it without seeing a trailer or reading a review
The Final..... disturbing premise but could of been pulled off better
Antisocial ..... Very mediocre and pales in comparison to the Signal
Dracula :Untold..... Enjoyed this more than I expected. Luke Evans carried the film. I'd like to see him in a darker sequel
Cockneys vs Zombies .... The geezers are hilarious but the rest isn't as enthralling
Hellbound : Hellraiser 2 ..... I've always enjoyed this more than the first.
Devils Pass...forgettable aside from the twist ending
The Shadow of the Vampire ..... Dafoe was brilliant , Oscar worthy!

He was a glorious bastard . I would of liked to see that series continue instead of that awful film we got a couple years ago

That's pretty much my take on Freddy vs Jason. I would add that I also kinda liked Freddy & Jason's battle in the dream world. Not as good as the dream battle in ANOES 3: The Dream Warriors, but still pretty good.

And I think Kelly Rowland is tied with the fake Jason Mewes as the worst part of the movie. I'm not being racist with that comment either. The b**ch can't act worth a damn, and she looked way too old to be a high school student (not unless her character got held back at least ten times anyway).

I thought the main actress was almost unbearable. However I think they did a good job with the film considering it was hard to pull off. It's worth the suffering to see Freddy and Jason together.

Jason Mewes actually did in interview for the Never Sleep again documentary discussing his appearance in F vs J , as a gag.

The main actress was hired for her looks rather than her acting ability unfortunately. Someone needed to tell Ronny Yu that this was a horror movie, not a porno, and that a girl's ability to act was more important than how hard she s**ks your d**k.

I watched Never Sleep Again on You Tube and ROTFLMFAO when (the real) Jason Mewes was being interviewed, then said "Wait a minute! I was never in this movie!" And walks off. That was great.

Watched "Absentia". Easily the best Lovecraftian horror film of the last decade.
