The Horror Thread - Part 4

Watched Zodiac. Great, great movie. Really goddamn terrifying.

Annabelle is a goddamned insult. I was dragged to see it by my friends last Friday. It was a packed show. People were desperate to see a horror film in October. You could hear the crowd trying to give it a chance but by the halfway point it was a room of groans and laughter.

That bad huh? It reeked of desperation when they first announced the film last year. I was gonna give it the benefit of the doubt, but I'll probably sit it out now.

My horror marathon so far.

31 Days of Horror Marathon
Day 1: The Night Flier - 8.5/10
Day 2: John Carpenter's Body Bags - 6/10
Day 3: Annabelle - 4/10
Day 4: Resolution - 7/10
Day 5: Suspiria - 7.5/10
Day 6: Frankenstein's Army - 6/10
Day 7: Ju-on - 8/10

I haven't had time to do a proper marathon, but I watched Blood Glacier, aka The Station last night. It's a German creature feature that I felt was better than several reviews gave it credit for. One thing I cannot stress enough is to watch it subtitled. I had to turn off the English dub ten minutes in it was so terrible.
It's a decent film, not heavy on plot but has some decent characters and some nice effects that sadly get obscured often in the dark. If they could have kept it looking good, I'd have liked more creature attacks in the daylight. I will say the last 5 minutes are unbearably stupid. It's supposed to be heartwarming and also a bit sad, but it involves a twist that just did not work for me.
Still, recommended. 6.5/10

Day six saw Zombieland. I'm in catchup mode now thanks to work.

Even as a quickie spinoff, they had the resources at hand they probably could have made a watchable movie. That's what makes it even worse. They actually had some okay actors and borrowed some 1960s clothing and sets. It just makes it more obvious they didn't know what to do with any of it.

This isn't actually being offered yet. Its pretty well hideous. I'm a sucker for the Overlook carpet pattern (I even have a tie!) but this doesn't do it for me.

I really wish I could have gotten one of the sweaters Mondo put out last year. There was a very limited ordering window and I could't swing it at the time.

The second season of Horror themed game show Release The Hounds has been awesome.

The show is all your favourite horror movies mixed with a game show filmed on a remote English country estate.

Just a fyi if anyone wanted to see a real attempt at a World War Z adaptation, check out The Dead and The Dead 2: India. It's not great but there's a lot to appreciate.

Finally caught up by marathoning Puppetmaster 1, 2 and 3. Those were fun. Wish I had those Blade, Torch and Pinhead figures from the late 90s now.

Puppet Master 2 scared me...I mean the ending. It was on tv, and I didn't pay attention (I think I read a comic book or something), and then I looked at the tv. What a nightmare.

I've never seen the puppet master films

I enjoyed Annabelle more then The Conjuring. Which is saying something since my love for the first one is why I was so hyped for Annabelle. So I don't agree with some of the critics on this one.

Yeah, it's easily the best horror film this year.

Day 10

Scary Movie 1 through 3

Day 11

Scary Movie 4, John Carpenter's The Fog

... but Annabelle does nothing.

I could go into details about why I disagree and feel Annabelle did plenty. But to just put it simply Annabelle was my favorite part of The Conjuring, so naturally I would enjoy her own movie. If someone told me she wasn't the highlight of the movie for them, then I would likely tell them they may not enjoy Annabelle as much as The Conjuring.
