The Horror Thread - Part 5

I thought Haley did a good job. I guess it makes sense to do another reboot though. Fans won't bicker as much. No one is as offended by the reboot - reboot . At least this time we won't have to deal with half assed recreations of scenes from the original . I'm exited about new dream sequences .

I didn't like the reboot, it was extremely bland and forgettable. The only thing I liked was whenever they introduced new information about the sleep deprivation like when they mention that if they go too much time without sleep, their brains would shut down and stuff like that. Too bad they didn't use that kinda stuff to its full potential.

How about Zack Ward for Freddy. For those of you who don't know him he was Scut Farkus in A Christmas Story and he was actually in FvS. He played Marks brother. Here he is from FvJ

Sean Harris or Ben Mendelsohn would make good Freddy too.

Is there a NOES thread? I didn't see it, but...

New Line is rebooting A Nightmare on Elm Street. David Leslie Johnson (Orphan, Wrath of the Titans, The Conjuring 2, two episodes of The Walking Dead) is writing it.

Another one? Platinum Dunes' reboot kinda sucked (good creepy atmosphere, but lousy characters and suggesting Freddy might have been innocent was just stupid), but it was only like five years ago. More time should pass before making another attempt.

But if they are going to reboot it again, here's who should play Freddy:

Now that'll be a freakin' Nightmare On Elm Street movie!

I actually think someone physically big and visually dominating would make a good Freddy. I thought Jackie Earle Haley was this small dude who didn't seem very threatening, and I realize that doesn't matter because it's the world of dreams and anything can happen... but I always felt Freddy was this larger-than-life boogeyman who should tower over people. Englund was obviously amazing, but I could've done without all the jokes and puns in the later movies. He turned into an Adam West Batman villain.

No thanks.

That'd actually be pretty great.

No. Just no.

Kane Hodder, Derek Mears, Tyler Mane, Dave Batista, Conan Stevens, none of these guys are good choices for Freddy. Krueger is a pedophile, a sexual sadist, and a serial killer. Before he became a dream demon, he had to blend in with society in order to maintain a low profile. A 7' tall muscle bound monster would kinda stick out like a sore thumb.

Also, pedophiles are by their very nature cowards. That is why they prey on children (well that and their sick sexual preference). So they don't have to be physically dominating to adults. Just so long as they are physically dominating to children, which pretty much all adults are (even the slightly smaller than average sized adults).

Freddy Krueger's power doesn't come from raw physical power. It's from his mastery of the Dream Realm. His ability to manipulate his victim's dreams and turn them into nightmares. His ability to have whatever he does to his victims in their dreams to happen in real life. With a supernatural being like Fred Krueger, that's all you need.

I will agree with you about the bad puns in the later sequels though. Those just ruined the franchise for me.

That's a pretty good choice.

Is anyone going to see The Gift tonight? While probably more suspense thriller, I heard it has some elements of horror to the story. It's been getting crazy good reviews. 41 critics reviewed and it's sitting at a 93% on Rottentomatoes.

I definitely wanna check It out. I need to support something that's good and was made with care and effort in lieu of the stinker that is Fant-four-stic.

Holy hell, I hope you enjoy it!

I thought it was a fantastic movie. My stomach at the end of it was kind of in knots.

To promote Sinister 2, the studio is hosting midnight screenings of films that inspired the new one.

The series is to include The Devils Backbone, The Ring, Let the Right One In and Night of the Living Dead.

Even if Sinister 2 sucks its cool that they are giving people a chance to see some great films in theaters. Here's a list of showdates and theaters.

I liked the reboot a lot too.
Haley was great.

The reboot was goodish, but yeah, Haley did wonders for the given material. I woudn't mind if he gets another chance to play Freedy.

Incredibly unlikely I know.

I thought that Rooney Mara was the worst thing about the Elm Street reboot...and then when she started getting bigger roles, she publicly disowned the movie as if she was too good for it. My memory is that she said she tried to botch the audition because she didn't want the gig, but they gave it to her anyway. I think she's also insulted the tv show Law and Order: SVU, which she apparently had a small role on for one episode back when she was a nobody. That lack of respect made me despise her, and I hate the Elm Street remake because of her.

HOWEVER...there is no need to "reboot" the franchise. We all know who Freddy is. Just make a new movie. That movie might take place in a new reality, or the original reality, or the reboot reality...hardly matters. Move forward.

JEH's performance was probably the best thing about the remake. He made Freddy creepy again, and I tip my fedora to him for that.

The dream sequences I thought was also pretty well done. They didn't totally copy the nightmares from the original, but did manage to pay tribute to them as well. Even Chris/Tina's death scene was a new take on the original concept. And that's how a remake should be done.

Where they lost me was with the whole "micro-naps" or whatever they were called, where you begin to dream even when you're awake due to sleep deprivation. I thought that was dumb.

What was even worse was insinuating that Freddy might have been innocent of the crimes he was accused of, and the parents burning him alive without due process. Of all the bad things I could list about the remake, that was the most unforgivable. Michael Bay is the one who should be burned alive for allowing that to happen.

I just hope the writers get the character RIGHT this time. Seriously, it's not that damn hard to do.

And here's a suggestion. How about if Robert Englund were to direct the movie? Who better to sit in the director's chair than the original Fred Krueger himself?

I liked the concept and part of the delivery of the "micro-naps"

I really hated A Green Day on Elm St. Kind of the cookie cutter junk that's expected from a remake.

Maybe add a little more of the parents struggle of seeing what their kid is going through and have the children be younger. More of a haunting, creeping vibe like The Ring... rather than Freddy telling jokes.
