The Horror Thread - Part 5

I liked the concept and part of the delivery of the "micro-naps"

I didn't like any of it. For one thing, it's totally made up. I occasionally have insomnia, usually stress related, and I never experience "micro-naps" from a lack of sleep. They made that crap up to try and "up the ante" in the remake, which was totally not needed. Just have a character nod off in class, like in the original, or have some a**hole parent or doctor forcefully/deceitfully drug their child/patient in order to force them to go to sleep against their will, like in Part 3 & Part 4 of the original franchise.

To promote Sinister 2, the studio is hosting midnight screenings of films that inspired the new one.

The series is to include The Devils Backbone, The Ring, Let the Right One In and Night of the Living Dead.

Even if Sinister 2 sucks its cool that they are giving people a chance to see some great films in theaters. Here's a list of showdates and theaters.

That's awesome

I wish they would have done one more solo Nightmare movie with Robert Englund either before or after Freddy vs. Jason, not counting New Nightmare.

I'd be down for another one with Englund as Old Man Freddy or something

With the makeup I don't even think it really matters how old he is, but I think he's done with the role and the makeup.

Speaking of a film kinda related to ANOES, "Wishmaster" is very underrated. Andrew Divoff was a great Djinn.

Hahaha those movies were so bad but I enjoyed them. I felt like they were trying to be Hellraiser-lite. I did love the design of Djinn though.

Djinns are the characters from where the genies come form right?

I did hear a rumor that Robert will appear in this new reboot as an older Freddy? Not sure about it though. He should at least do a cameo.

Micro-naps are real. It's actually called Microsleep.

I personally didn't mind them taking that route. I hope they go back to the more traditional way of having them fall asleep in class/home or drugged.

I didn't care for the NOES remake.

Krueger's CGI face was laughable. He looked like a decomposing rat.

I guess it's kinda like how ANOES got started in the first place. Taking a story with a sliver of truth, like Sleep Paralysis (or SUNDS, Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome as it was called at the time), and building something fantastical around it by adding a bunch of made up stuff.

Microsleep might be real, but nowhere in the article linked above does it say one achieves REM sleep while still awake. And it's when you're in REM sleep that you dream. So Freddy shouldn't be able to get to you while you're microsleeping because you still aren't dreaming.

In any case, I prefer the story telling methods of the original movie to the remake. The remake had a few good moments, but the bad far outweighs the good.

Did anyone see the trailer to Goodnight Mommy? I watched it last night and I'm still crepped out over it. I'm not a horror movie guy so I probably won't see it in theaters but I want to check it out after it's on DVD. It doesn't come out until September I believe but they had a screening of it on a NYC rooftop last night. My friend said it was one of the scariest movie's she's ever seen. Not, pop out of nowhere scary but bitter anxiety scary.

Don't ask me why, but I LOVE that series. I own all four on DVD. Each sequel is certainly worse than the last, but I'm just so damn entertained by them, haha. It's definitely in the category of Leprechaun or Hellraiser where you're saying to yourself "How the hell can there be more than two of these?"

Crazy to see this thread slip to the 4th page.

I rented a film from 2012 called "The Loved Ones."

I enjoyed it.

The basic premise is that a high school boy is kidnapped by one of his classmates and her father to be her date at their deranged at-home prom.

The film takes a lot of influence from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Much of the "prom" essentially builds upon the dining room scene with the whole family in Texas Chainsaw.

The film provides some comic relief with a parallel subplot of the protagonist's friends at the actual high school prom.

Overall a well done film.

Watched Lost After Dark (2015), the latest in a long string of slasher films that exist solely to tell you that the people involved also enjoy classic slasher films.

A group of high school kids plan to go out to a vacation house to party for the weekend. Killer shows up.

Like most of these new "retro" movies, it takes place in the 80's for no reason whatsoever except to play old sounding music and give the cast old looking clothes and hairstyles. I guess it does help to avoid why no one uses a cell phone though.

The budget is better than most...it's an Anchor Bay release...so at least it doesn't look like it cost $5 to make.

The girls are all attractive, but there is no nudity. That shouldn't matter...but you don't make an 80's slasher homage without breasts and sex. Small point though.

One good thing is that it seems to respect the genre. Too many of these homages seem to be making fun of the classics, and mocking the fans...and that makes NO sense to me. This plays as serious the entire time.

Also, there are a few instances where they changed from the expected story/character cliches, which was appreciated, but they aren't redefining the genre or anything.

The killer is just a guy with long hair and a beard. A modern slasher homage MUST have an iconic looking killer...yet very, very few of them do. If you are making a slasher movie, here's some advice: Start with hiring someone to design an awesome looking killer. Do nothing further until you have a killer that looks like he belongs next to Jason, Freddy, Leatherface and Chucky.

A few decent kills.

A few really dumb editing decisions that exist only to sell the idea that the movie was actually made in the 80's. There is one scene that ends abruptly as the "film" becomes damaged and the "reel" is lost. Come on, guys.

Overall...not a waste of time...and more respectful than the majority of slasher homages...but not exactly giving us a modern classic either.

Sinister 2 currently has an 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not surprised the trailers looked awful.

I still want a prequel to A Nightmare on a Elm Street, could even work as TV movie. They don't have to say he's a fiddler aswell just stick to the original where they said he was a child killer.

I saw Goodnight Mommy last night.

Disappointed I was. The trailer gets you good and hyped but it never delivered for me.

I actually kinda expected that when I saw the trailer. It looked like it tried too hard to be artsy. But I dunno when I'll see it.

Movie The Witch has gotten rave reviews at this years Sundance Festival. You can see the trailer on Youtube.

The film stars Ralph Ineson (Game Of Thrones, The Office UK, Guardians Of The Galaxy & Harry Potter franchise) and Kate Dickie (Promethues, Game Of Thrones & Filth)

Ugh, please no.

And Freddy was a fiddler in the the original.

I've been saying the same thing for years. I even asked Robert Englund if he'd be willing to reprise the role of Freddy in a prequel when I met him at the 2014 Vancouver Fan Expo, and he told me that he would. He also said that there were plans for a prequel years ago, but it fell through for whatever reason.

Chris Notorile of Blinky Productions had actually written, produced, and directed a series of Elm Street Prequels which starred Roberto Lombardi as The Springwood Slasher. I had posted links to them earlier in this thread. Personally, I think they could and should be fleshed out into a feature length film.

And I agree with you with keeping Freddy a child killer like in the original. While he was a pedophile, he was also a sexual sadist. That means he derived sexual pleasure from the torture and murder of children. He didn't need to drop his pants to get sexual gratification from the children. To him, his claws were his sexual instruments.
