The Horror Thread - Part 5

For me personally, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the scariest film I've ever seen. I've seen better made movies. I've seen gorier movies. But that is the movie that consistently gets under my skin. There's an attempt made in the last third to shift some aspects towards comedy (which Hooper made much more overt in the bonkers TCM2) but it still doesn't negate what comes before and what comes after.

The first part of the film up to the first appearance of Leatherface could really just work on its own as a short film.

When Leatherface suddenly appears, drags the young man into the starwell and then slams the metal panel down it freaks me the hell out no matter how many times I see it. In that scene he works almost like a trapdoor spider. He can grab you, drag you down, and you are just gone. Dead to the world. That freaks me out.

That scene is great. Classic horror right there. It's shocking because it seems so real. Slams the hammer over the guys head, we see his body twitching and convulsing. And then like you said when he drags him through the doorway and slams the metal door shut. You're like oh **** this just got real.

As far as I'm concerned Halloween and Halloween III are the only ones that exist.

As far as I'm concerned, Halloween, Halloween II, and Halloween H20 are the only ones that exist.

(I will admit that Halloween III & Halloween IV are guilty pleasures though)

^ Always entertaining. The roach sequence freaks me out.

As for Black and White Horror, you can't go wrong with The Wolf Man. I know you might be looking for something outside of just the Universal films but I think that one is really well put together.

Also, if you listen closely you might notice how much Danny Elfman's Batman theme borrowed from several cues in the Wolf Man.

Dracula for whatever reason I have a much harder time getting into.

Anyone a fan of the original Creepshow?

I love that movie. I bought the DVD last year. All of the stories still hold up to this day. I even like the sequel (still waiting to be able to find it on DVD as well).

I think my favorite one was the one with the monster in the crate. My favorite from the sequel was the one with the slime creature in the lake.

You can add the whole Universal Monsters canon to your list; the classic monsters rule. If you've seen Frankenstein, you gotta watch Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man for sure. All three were directed by James Whale and those movies churned out horror icons. Claude Rains is unforgettable as the Invisible Man and Bride of Frankenstein surpasses the original.

Going outside of Universal's icons, Vampyre was an interesting movie. I saw it once, didn't really care for it, but it's worth a watch. The 1931 Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was made before the Production Code, so it got away with some pretty overtly sexual moments that didn't happen in later films of that era.

Holy ****ing ****! Halloween will play near me in theaters! :mnm: :jd::pcg:
:R2:

Does anyone know where I can find the Hammer Films on Blu-Ray for an affordable price?

Well 3 isn't in the Myers continuity so it's all good. 4 is the only half way decent one that doesn't star JLC.

Since Wes passed I've been busy with work haven't had much time to watch anything. So last night decided to throw on Last House on the Left. Been years since I've see it. Watched the version with his introduction to the film on the dvd. RIP Mr. Craven.

Man, got one playing two hours away. Really wanna go but probably won't end up being able to :waa:

And Halloween in theaters is a dream come true:hmr::csad:
That sucks, man. Halloween is one of my dream theater movies, too.

I saw it at a drive in theater 2 years ago which was magical.

It was there and then that I witnessed a baffling exchange. In the middle of the movie I walked to get a soda and for a moment stood to the side of the screen and just kind of looked out at all of the cars and the projectors. It was during one of the sex scenes. Walking past me were two kids, a boy and a girl, 12 years old tops. They also stopped and watched the screen. The girl turned to the boy and said "Let's go do that!" and they joined hands and ran off into the night.

Also, two people in the car ahead of me were quite obviously boinking during most of the last 20 minutes of the film. Sex during a slasher movie just seems like a horribly misguided idea, never mind being in public.

It was playing at my local theater last Halloween but I didn't go. I might go if it plays again this year. Might as well.

Thank you for posting this.

No problem. I figured people who live in the Vancouver area might like to know about what horror movies are playing in the area on Halloween night.

And The Rio has been playing old horror movies for years. They used to do midnight horror movie double features every Friday night. They still do midnight movies on Fridays, but they're no longer exclusively horror films. And no longer double features, as they found most people would leave after the first show of the night, which made showing two movies kind of pointless.

I looked up the upcoming films at The Twilight Drive In Theatre in Langley, BC. I thought that they might show some classic horror movies on Halloween night. Horror films, especially low budget B movies, used to be the drive-ins' bread & butter. Unfortunately no luck. They might advertise something in the near future. If they do, I'll post it.

So, i'm planning to watch various horror films to suggest in an article for Halloween, however, i don't want to go with the most obvious candidates like the original Halloween, Exorcist, shinning, nightmare before christmas, conjuring, The Ring, etc.

Some of the titles i'm planning to watch are:
- Trick R Treat
- The Haunting
- Halloween III
- Cabin in the Woods
- Frankenweenie

Trying to put a bit of everything, but focus more on stuff teens nowadays would watch, anyone can recommend some more films? I need to put more recent horror films.

Okay, I've got a question for you guys.

At the end of Friday The 13th Part 2, after Jason breaks through the window and attacks Ginny, in the very next scene Ginny wakes up on a stretcher while being wheeled off to an ambulance and starts asking for Paul. And then when Paul doesn't show up she starts yelling "Where's Paul?"

I know that the producers intended for this to indicate that Jason had killed Paul. But I personally never saw it like that, because to me that just doesn't make any sense.

My question to you is "Do you see the ending to Part 2 the way the producers intended? Or are you more like me and feel that Paul actually survived the movie?"

Here's why I don't think Jason killing Paul makes any sense. I think the intention was that, unlike Jason jumping out of the lake and attacking Alice at the end of Part 1, Jason bursting through the window and attacking Ginny was NOT a hallucination. Paul ran to Ginny's aid and Jason killed him. The problem with that scenario is, "Why the hell did Jason let Ginny live?" She's injured, unconscious, and helpless. With Paul dead, there's nothing stopping him from finishing her off. It's not like he cares about giving his victims a fighting chance. One of his victims was in a wheel chair for Christ's sake!

I suppose there are a few ways that Jason COULD have killed Paul that would make sense. For instance, if you watch Jason closely when Ginny hacks into his shoulder while he's fighting Paul, Jason is bringing a pick-axe down on Paul's head at that exact same moment. Maybe the pick-axe connected, and everything after that was a hallucination brought on by shock, blood loss, and the trauma of the evening's events. But if that's true, then how did Ginny get back to camp on that injured leg?

Another possibility is that Jason killed Paul during their initial confrontation. Then Paul showing up to save Ginny was just a hallucination brought on by shock, blood loss, and psychological trauma. But if that's the case, then how the hell did Ginny manage to beat Jason without Paul's help?

Maybe Jason killed Paul during their initial confrontation, and everything that happened right up until the very end actually did happen, including Paul saving Ginny and Jason busting through the window to attack her. But the Paul that saved Ginny in Jason's shack and carried her back to camp when her injured leg would no longer carry her weight was actually Paul's ghost. But that would take the story into the supernatural territory that they were trying to stay away from at that time. If it WAS Ghost-Paul saving Ginny from Jason Swayze style, then they probably would have kept the original end shot where Mrs. Voorhees's severed head smiles and winks at the camera.

My personal theory? Paul survived the initial attack by Jason at the camp. He came to several minutes later and found both Jason and Ginny gone. He used his advanced wilderness survival training to track them to Jason's shack, where he finds Jason and Ginny locked in a life or death struggle. Paul comes to Ginny's aid, and the two of them kill, or at least grievously wound, Jason. During the long walk back to camp, Ginny collapses and Paul carries her the rest of the way. It's during this time that Ginny passes out due to exhaustion, shock, and blood loss. From there on, everything that happens between Ginny getting carried to camp and her waking up on a stretcher is a hallucination. While she's unconscious, the rest of the counselors in training return to camp, find out what happened, and then run and fetch the police. When the police get there, Paul leads them to Jason's shack, where they find his mother's mummified head sitting on an altar surrounded by the dead bodies of the town sheriff, Terry, and Alice from the first movie (also mummified), but no Jason. It's at this time that Ginny wakes up and starts asking for Paul.

So what do you guys think? Is Paul alive or dead? And if he's dead, then how the hell does Ginny survive the night?
