The Horror Thread - Part 5

I'd like to see a new good Hellraiser. I loved the first two, watched a few of the sequels and they just got worse.

There's still a chance with Clive Barker writing the reboot. But they've rejected him a few times in the past so I don't have that much hope they'll finally greenlight his script.

Watched Dark Summer (2015) a low budget movie that apparently gets its name because it takes place during the summer and the picture is so dark at times I struggled to see anything.

Basically, a teenager cyber-stalked a girl and got house arrest for a few months. His parents are gone the entire time, so they are non-factors. He has a few friends who visit him...and then creepy stuff happens and he thinks that a spirit is haunting him. By "creepy stuff" I mean, mirrors crack, lights flicker...nothing requiring a budget.

It moves really slowly and I had figured out the end within a few minutes of the film's beginning...but I've seen worse movies. There's one fairly good scene in a pool, but ultimately this movie is a skip. It's kind of boring and there's no real tension built up to get to the predictable pay-off.

Watched Gnome Alone (2015), featuring Verne Troyer.

As they explain in the beginning, a witch stole some gold from a leprechaun, so the leprechaun attacked her, and she called up a wise cracking gnome for protection...and then for some reason the gnome passed down from female to female forever to protect them. Yeah, dumb.

Anyway, this girl gets the gnome and he starts killing everyone she doesn't like. I'm not sure if this was meant to be old-school or if it was just terrible writing, but the bad people in this movie were just over the top blatantly bad. I find that annoying because they are fodder, not characters...and a movie shouldn't be chock full of fodder.

There's a lot of groan inducing stupidity going on, no attempt to make a story that feels real or makes much sense. Even when characters are kissing, they can't even get that right as its like these are strangers being told to kiss, not actors trying to convince me that they want to kiss.

Eh...if you're into silliness like Leprechaun or Troll...then this is another one of those, except no one will remember this.

Watched The Ouija Experiment 2: Theatre of Death (2015)

The cast of the first movie is having a screening of the film in a movie theater and apparently are having some haunted house type thing over the weekend. This is the weakest of all set-ups, as they give away 3 free tickets to the haunted house, and those are the only customers we see the entire film. In fact, they even take these three on a very long trip through the place...spending tons of time with a small group that didn't pay to get in. It is stated that there are other customers...but no one seems to notice when the employees start getting killed by a ghost thats been called up by a Ouija board...well...not really a ghost, since the ghost is stabbed at one point.

There is a line early in the film from one of the actors where he says "so, we'll be acting, but not really." This is an accurate description of what happens in the film. Hilariously, when an actor stumbles over their lines...misspeaking etc...they just keep on rolling and they repeat the sentence correctly or just brush off the mistake.

The picture is low budget and the sound goes in and out at times, especially early in the film...where people are talking while people clap, and the words are clear but the claps are silent.

I did slightly enjoy watching them struggle to make a movie though.

It's one of the few times where a horror remake was as good if not better than the original. And yeah the music was incredible and it's so overlooked whenever great horror scores get brought up.

I agree music was great, loved the style of it how it was filmed and had good kills and gore. And while I like the original this was a remake that I thought was better than the original. Very good stuff.

I donated to 31, so, I'm looking forward to it. And Crimson Peak. As much as I am happy Dougherty is going Krampus, I wish he had done Trick or Treat 2.

I don't think that was cancelled. I think he just made the Krampus film first. Both are with Legendary. Legendary had a pretty big launch announcement for Trick r Treat 2.

The Babadook won Best Picture and Best Director at the Australian academy awards!

Can't link here, but apparently an extended cut of the Evil Dead remake played on TV in the UK which included the ending that several times they denied ever filming.

The clips are online over at bloody disgusting

That's another remake that I enjoyed just as much/more than the original.

I find the remake film to be very underrated, or at the very least, over hated. That movie had solid practical effects and fairly decent acting.

My only real problems with it were the call backs to the original film that Tapert forced Alvarez to include.

Alvarez had not planned on having the tree rape. Instead Mia (it was Mia wasn't it?) would have been infected by a deadite coyote puking the slug into her mouth. That actually makes way more sense with the rest of the movie as mouth to mouth is how most of the other characters are tainted.

Instead Tapert insisted upon having the tree rape, even though Raimi himself has backtracked and has stated his regrets for the original scene. The original scene is certainly ugly but it is suitably frightening and disturbing. In the remake it is nothing but fan service, which is disturbing in other ways.

I saw the film a crowded pre-screeing. The tree rape garnered loud applause. Very bizarre.

Does this mean we'll finally get an unrated release on BD finally? Or at least something close to it (because those scenes being tossed doesn't seem like it would drop the from NC-17 to R on their own to me).

The Sundance movie, The Nightmare has been garnering good reviews and looks terrifying.

Just saw Annabelle.
I was VERY pleasantly surprised, especially by the [BLACKOUT]demon. They actually SHOWED it. I was so happy.[/BLACKOUT]

Really? I loved the opening thought that was the scariest bit but personally I don't find [BLACKOUT]Demon's[/BLACKOUT] to be scary at all. I think they should have done more with the concept of the Doll actually been possessed. I don't think it would have had to have looked like Chucky. The [BLACKOUT]Demon[/BLACKOUT] did look cool though.

Looks amazing! It's a shame it's not getting a bigger release with the right marketing behind it this could be huge. It certainly looks unique.

Only 5? That's just too limited.

I saw Hellevator, a cheap japanese movie. It had some interesting ideas, but it really went nowhere, and most stuff were unnecessary. The pacing was an issue, the actros were bad, and it's really a forgettable movie.

Don't Look Now is coming to the Criterion Collection. Tell me you guys are all over that.

In that picture above, who are the three characters to the left of Patrick Bateman?
