The Horror Thread - Part 5

Finally watched Afflicted (2014) a found footage movie about two guys who go on vacation around the world and post video blogs about it. Nothing scary happens and we learn a lot about other lands and cultures. Kidding.

I HATE found footage. Because of my bias, I am pretty much unable to truly love a found footage movie, so I've been putting this off.

No real spoilers at all.

It's actually one of the better found footage movies I've ever seen (I was bored silly by both Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project). It had solid enough character development that made me actually like these two guys, which is really important (yet often overlooked)...and a reasonable enough explanation for the camera being present (though...whatever...I just hate the gimmick).

For people who want a darker take on a well worn sub-genre of Horror, this does the trick.

I do kind of wish that the movie was called Ends of the Earth, which is what the video blog was called.

Also, as a guy who works with a small indie band, PROPS to the film makers for devoting some solid time in actually promoting a real band. It baffles me that indie Horror movies don't team with indie bands more often to cross-promote (even if it's just a song during the credits).

No kidding! It's great until that stupid ending. Love the casting in that though (Julia Garner should be in more things, and I'd like to forget Sin City 2).

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that way. Every review I've read has been really positive.

The actresses were phenomenal indeed.

The thing about Horror reviews that I've found is that most go in WANTING to be positive. If a movie is good, but has a few TERRIBLE flaws, those flaws are simply forgotten about. I can't do that when the flaw is that the ending flies in the face of everything that we witnessed before it. Did I see it coming? No...but that doesn't mean that it fooled me...it means that it doesn't fit in the story they told.

i recently watched a french horror movie from 2007 called INSIDE. i'm almost never impressed with modern horror, but this one was very very good!!! watch it. creepy and brutal.

I've been meaning to watch this one again for quite some time. I remember seeing it back when it came out and I was floored by the ending.

Anyone seen Martyrs?

I have...I thought the first 10 minutes of it was really good, but everything after that was pretty awful.

Saw The Devil's Hand/Where the Devil Hides.
Six women in a close-knit Amish community go into labor and deliver six girls, sparking fears that they could fulfill an ancient prophecy. The prophecy states that six girls will be born on the sixth day of the six month (6-6-6) and that one of them will become the "Devil’s Hand"
I thought the premise sounded good but execution was terrible.

The film couldn't decide if it wanted to be a CW-style teen melodrama, challenging theological isolated community thriller, a slasher film, a supernatural horror film or a film about a power hungry pervert.

The cast is features solid actors like Rufus Sewell, Colm Meaney and Jennifer Carpenter in supporting roles while the young leads are the cast of various CW shows such as The 100, Reign and The Originals.

I saw that a few months ago and didn't like it either. Really the only thing I remember about it was one of the actresses looked quite a bit older than her friends but was supposed to be the same age...and then I think it got really silly near the end.

Saw Lemon Tree Passage.

It wasnt very good. Didnt have any internal logic so a lot of things that happened in the movie didnt make much sense.

I recall a few jump scares that kind of got me but other than that, its forgettable.

I recall it being alright.

Maybe I need to revisit it again but I remember watching that and being so disturbed by it. On second thought, maybe I shouldn't. :funny:

I just downloaded We Are What We Are based on the suggestions above. :awesome:

I just found out one of my co-workers had to take her 9 year old son to the hopsital because he watched this movie called Cannibal Holocaust, and it's freaking him out. Apparently his older 18 year old brother was watching it in his room, and the younger brother snuck in to see what big bro was up to. Is the movie that bad? The father was just emailing me that his little one kept on crying about a turtle, and it's no secret, that turtles are his favorite animals. His asthma really got agitated and they had to take him to the hospital to get him to breathe again.

thats amazing.

cannibal holocaust is a notorious film. when it was released it was pretty much banned everywhere and the director was held in contempt until he could produce all the actors from the movie to prove they were alive and not killed on film. it's extremely violent. and the footage of the turtle being dismembered and cooked was done to a real turtle. but, all that said, the film is actually quite good. there is a lot of brutal violence, it can be disturbing, but it's not hollow. it's a must see movie for any horror fan.

Never watched Cannibal Holocaust. It was the one horror flick I just don't have any desire to hunt down.

I 'm not sure if I can still be considered a horror fan. I haven't kept up with whats going on, that includes with Clive Barker. :( I'm bummed to hear about fearnet, that was my go to for catching up on stuff that I am way behind on.

I bet it was the blonde one

Anyone seen Martyrs?

Martyrs is great, in my opinion, but I think it's simpler than people give it credit for. Everyone thinks it's so edgy and innovative and "deep", but it's none of those things once you really get down to it. Still, I love it, and I watch it at least twice a year.

Just watched Stephen King's Bag of Bones, the made-for-TV movie directed by Mick Garris, starring Pierce Brosnan.

If you've read the book, you'll most likely hate it; however, I thought it was a pretty damn good movie. Set aside all your knowledge of the novel and just watch it as a separate film. That's what I did.

About half way through the film, I found myself saying, "You know what? The music is pretty fantastic, Pierce Brosnan is great as always, the cinematography is surprisingly good for a TV movie, and the story - although streamlined - is just as compelling as the source material... I can't find a reason to NOT like this."

I give it 8/10.

Mick Garris is a director who gets way to much hate, and I think it's unjustified. The guy takes massive Stephen King stories and adapts them as perfectly as possible for television. Seriously, The Shining is as close as you're going to get to the novel and is much more faithful than Kubrick's version. The Stand is a 6-hour TV miniseries that's about as big and epic as it gets for TV, and is surprisingly faithful to the book. Not to mention, Stephen King himself wrote the teleplays to The Shining and The Stand.

The Stand (1994)
The Shining (1997)
Riding the Bullet (2004)
Desperation (2006)
Bag of Bones (2011)

I don't get it. I enjoy all of his work greatly.

Trailer for Unfriended

Honestly this could either be kinda good or really funny. We'll see.

That's looks hilarious. It could be the horror comedy of the year.
