The Horror Thread - Part 5

Recently watched As Above, So Below. As far as found camera footage movies go, it wasn't bad. It actually had a pretty interesting premise, and there were some genuinely creepy moments to it. The end kind of falls apart, though because it introduces some GREAT concepts that aren't given nearly enough time to delve into. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel that does those concepts justice.

Watched this last year, it was a solid film with a few surprises thrown in and of course some eerie moments (Hooded Demon in the chair) i agree about the concepts idea. They didn't really have time to flesh out those ideas which was a shame. Maybe they would of gone abit over the top with the major details. Overall though regarding how Camera footage films are nowere days . This film stood out nicely. Glad you watched it and found it enjoyable.:yay:

I've been looking forward to "It Follows" for a long time, huge bummer that there's still no word of it playing soon anywhere near me.

Can anybody recommend some recent horror or thriller movies that are actually scary?

Horror movies seem to be in a big stink at the moment.

Well I wouldn't know about "actually scary"... but here's some really good horror films from last couple of years:

Afflicted
The Babadook
Maniac (remake)
The Conjuring
Stoker
Haunter
The Taking of Deborah Logan
The Bay
The Pact
REC 4
Sinister
La Horde
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
Evil Dead (remake)
The Purge: Anarchy

I'm not sure that there are any actually scary Horror films anymore...but Oculus and Honeymoon are recent, good and on Netflix Instant streaming...and I think that The Babadook (which is outstanding) and Starry Eyes will be added sometime this month.

Also, while it is not scary and is more of a Horror/Comedy...I recommend the New Zealand film Housebound, one of last year's better Horror movies...and the already in development American remake won't be nearly as good.

I watched Monsters Dark Continent which was incredibly boring.

The director directed episodes of Misfits and the cast was made up of some solid British actors playing Americans but the film was dull.

Over long, generic narration and the lead actor just cried like a little b**** throughout half the movie.

The monsters were even more irrelevant than they were in the first film. This is essentially a war movie but which thinks it is deep and thought provoking but it isn't.

I just watched 'Digging the marrow... Why!? This movie like so many found footage films starts with a fun and interesting premise but then decides to piss on it. Ray Wise was enjoyable enough but really took me out of the movie. Blaire Witch or Trollhunters this movie is not.

noroi is an interesting mockumentary. I wouldn't say it's scary, but there is a constant feeling of dread, and the actors are quite good.

thanks NB I will be sure to check it out. I love found footage but its hard to come by quality films. I think they need to do more FF films based not on supernatural themes but something actually possible.

Housebound is brilliant. I highly recommend What We Do in the Shadows too.

Exactly my thoughts on it. Really interesting idea that doesn't amount to anything.

I finally watched "Clown"

It had me hooked from the trailers. I liked it, made me chuckle a few times (not sure if it was intentional or not). The clown in the video footage looked creepier than the big reveal clown monster towards the end (kinda wish the Chiodo brothers would have helped with the big clown demon). Also makes me wonder what would have happened if it had a bigger budget. But it did have all practical effects, which I loved. I'd recommend for a rental and watch with a few drinks and friends.

I recently watched Spring.

A man travels to Italy after a recent family tragedy where he meets a beautiful and mysterious woman who hides a terrible secret.

Kind of a ****** synopsis on my part lol. But its a really good movie. Its technically a horror movie since it involves a supernatural creature but its not scary at all. Its actually a nice little romantic movie that veers off into the world of weird.

I think I read one review blurb that said the movie is like a combination of Before Sunrise and HP Lovecraft. Check it out.

I haven't seen this yet (for some reason I haven't watched many Horror movies this year...by this time last year I was into double digits)...but I think this is from the same team that did Resolution...and if anyone hasn't seen Resolution, then what are you waiting for? It's awesome (and on Netflix Instant)!!

Never heard of it but Ill check it out later. Thanks for the rec.

I've heard that It Follows is supposed to be REALLY good.

I've seen it and it is definitely good. But just like any movie, you will find plenty of people on IMDB complaining about how they didn't like it.
The Babadook has a 98% rating on rotten tomatoes while the IMDB score is 6/10 and I agree with rotten tomatoes.

Our theater never got "It Follows." I was highly disappointed.

The Babadook is hands down still the best thing I've seen in this genre since 1996, with Scream.

My local theater is getting It Follows this weekend I believe. Looking forward to seeing it.
