Bomb disarmers can also help with the safe...it is up to you as stated. So if other people won't step up to disarm the bombs (which they are rather easy...the safe is hard) then you can help with the safe afterwards.

If Alec Trevelyan was cut in half by a laser.

Alec Trevelyan was the primary villain in the film "Goldeneye." He was a "00" agent along James Bond in the film, his designation being "006." The cut in half by a laser aspect makes me think that the code could be "003," but that one's already been used for the dyslexic Leonidas.
