Hmm. I'm also wondering what's the point of reboots that aren't truthful reboots. Like Superman Returns-it's like they looked over the old movies & decided to pick & choose what to keep. I fear they may do the same with Spider-Man.

It was faithful in all the wrong ways. It expanded on some things I really don't think should have been revisited-like their short-lived romance, & rehashed some really stupid things like Lex trying to gain real estate and being the only person on Earth who knows what Kryptonite is.

How were they supposed to know everyone was going to hate it...Superman and Superman 2 are constantly listed when looking at the greatest superhero movies. It would be like someone continuing Nolan's Bat movies and everyone hating it.

27 year time lapse. Reboots to DC's continuity. The success of the revamped Batman. The fact that it was no longer the 70's. 3 separate TV incarnations depicting Lex as a corrupt CEO rather than a mad scientist or "the greatest criminal mind of our time". The successes of other modern superhero movies. The signs were all there. Singer & Co. just chose to ignore them. We got a recycled, rehashed, uninspired retread that felt dated with its 70's atmosphere, and everything new that was brought to the table was just nightmarishly bad.

I think reboots should be the last resort for a franchise.

S Returns was not a reboot.

It was and it wasn't. My understanding was that it was basically a re-imagined sequel to "Superman II".

which makes it a sequel and not a reboot. Although they didnt have the same cast it followed storylines from Superman 2

But there was ALREADY a sequel to Superman II; two of them in fact. And since neither of them showed Lois engaged or raising a child I have to conclude that they were retconned out of existence.

Maybe from a technical standpoint of having superior SFX, but in terms of actual storytelling and acting... not so much. A real disappointment from Bryan Singer, a man who has made much better films.

No and I aim to keep it that way. But as bad as they were, they weren't boring. As I've said numerous times, SR had all the flaws of the Donner films and none of their good points. And it was abysmally dull.
Funny how we shifted from whether or not SR did replace the existing sequels to whether or not it should have. Bottom line, it wasn't that much of an improvement.

Superman Returns was and is definitely a disappointment - it's a real shame that Bryan Singer decided to try to make a Richard Donner Superman movie instead of a Bryan Singer Superman movie (whatever that would be), it's not the Superman movie most of us wanted at the time - but I think it's far, far superior to Superman III, Superman IV, and Superman III and IV combined, not just technically, but in that it actually has real ideas on its mind and emotions to explore (the overriding "you can't go home again"/"Does the world still need a Superman?" theme is very compelling), even if they're not explored particularly well in the end.

They weren't explored particularly well in the beginning. Or the middle.

I love me some reboots.

I enjoyed the Batman and Hulk reboots and I highly anticipate the Spider-man and Superman reboots not to mention a host of yet to be anounced superhero movie reboots.

Reboots are the best thing that can happen to a comic book franchise in the gutter.

Exactly. I personally see nothing wrong with the direction that they're going but many fans have already written it off as the next Schumacher disaster.
