The Avengers The "I Believe In Mark Ruffalo!" Support Thread

Yeah, I think the Loki actor (Hiddleston) may have confirmed or hinted he may be in the Avengers. The only thing I'm worried about really is if we're going to see Hulk the hero in this one. We haven't had too much of that in the last two films. It was mainly about running away and fighting when cornered in those films.

Well, I have faith Whedon will at least want to have a more faithful Hulk this time around. Whether he is allowed to do that is another matter.

I'm just hoping we get him talking properly this time, with it clear he has his own separate personality from Banner. That goes a long way to establishing him as a character the public can take in as a hero than the TV show legacy of reducing him to a virtually mute plot device. Would also work far better in making him a member of the Avengers. As he was last seen in TIH you couldn't see how the Avengers would really want him in the team at all (if Fury has reservations about Stark, he wouldn't want to know with Banner/Hulk). That would have to change if he is to be wind up with them.

You do know how the Loki/Hulk/Avengers deal went down in their very first issue, right?
Hulk was not the villain, but the other heroes were tricked into thinking he was, and that's why they fought. When Loki's hand in the matter was revealed they all turned on Loki and Hulk became one of the founding Avengers.

Why are you assuming they are ignoring all that and just making the Hulk the bad guy now? If anything, Ruffalo's "He may or may not be" suggests they are gonna follow that kind of plot.

Yes yes, im fully aware of the Avengers/Hulk history. As a reader of Marvel comics for the past 20 years in my opinion, and this is just my opinion that I would live for the writers/ producers, etc of the Avengers Movie to really push the envelope with this movie and create a different threat than Loki/ Hulk as the plot of the movie. Especially since Loki will be the Villain in the Thor movie. For example the rumor of Thanos sounded interesting to me, cause he would be a threat that no one hero could handle. Just my two cents.

That's fair enough. Personally I think Aliens, be it Thanos, Skrulls, Kree etc, would be a bit too much for the first movie, which is gonna be as much about them getting together, how they deal with each other and so on, as it will be about the threat they have to face. A big epic Alien threat like Thanos would be better dealt with once the Avengers are established (and they might well be thinking of using him down the line seeing as an 'Infinity Gauntlet' prop has already been made for 'decoration' in Odin's vault for Thor).

Would like to see them set something up for a big epic threat in this one though. A sub plot with hints the fans will recognise and the GA will wonder about (an end credit scene with a big gray hand putting the Gauntlet on perhaps).

I totally agree... Thanos would be a really cool, HULK-esque bad guy. I'd like to see a Aaron Sims concept of him!

Is anyone else concerned that when it comes to mentioning the films building up to the events in "The Avengers" that TIH barely, if not, rarely gets a mention at times? I mean it's like they pretend that the events of TIH aren't important overall to the lead up to the Avengers like CA, IM1 & 2, and Thor are.

Yep....
I'm just speculating, but that could be due to the casting change. Not mentioning TIH gives them an out in case they go in a completely different direction. Again, that's just my opinion. I hope I'm wrong.

Nothing new, TIH support has been weak from the get-go.

Well, TIH did not do as well as I'm sure Marvel had hoped, so it's possible they may have learned from that and do intend doing the Hulk different this time around. Ie: Having him as a proper talking character rather than just a virtually mute brawler (again!!). If they want him on the Avengers team that really should be a no brainer, assuming the Hulk will wind up being part of the team. With that in mind distancing the new version from the previous effort is more understandable.

BUT...will they change his look from TIH?

I hope not too much. He looked pretty good in TIH, although I'd still prefer him over-all about 10-15% reduced in size.

Probably. I doubt it will be a huge change though. More a refinement of TIH's version than a complete overhaul.

Personally, I hope they stick with same kind of face and hair. That was spot on. The body proportions were great too, but I think they did go a little overboard in the visible muscle sinews area. Tone that down a little and it'd be ideal for me.

I think he should have a lot more muscle mass, closer physique-wise to Ang Lee's. (Er, Ang Lee's Hulk, that is, not Ang Lee's physique)

Keep the skin tone, tho. THAT"S the kinda green that works in live action.

I thought he looked pretty perfect in TIH, so hopefully they don't change much in the design. Just give him a couple more lines, or at least emotion points to build his character like the cave scene.

The version used in TIH was based off Dale Keown's Hulk...and I like it. The only changes I would make would be in the proportion of the body parts. The forearms and calves need to be bigger....so it's not just a taller, wider superhero body...but truly a HULKING hulk.

Of course he needs to talk...about the same way that he does in the new cartoon (Earth's Mightiest Heroes).

As a Hulk fan...I'm loving the idea that a manipulated Hulk might be the centerpiece of this. And it makes sense...especially when you factor in that scene with Ross and Stark in the bar.

The Avengers is going to ROCK...and Mark Ruffalo will do a great job.

Keown's has always been my favorite Hulk.

I too liked the more "massy" look of Ang Lee's version. A bit too much sinew on TIH version for my taste. Had a steroid vibe. And made it harder to take him as a sympathetic character (not impossible...just harder).

Didn't hate TIH look, but 2003 was really easy to feel sorry for. That baby face worked on me. :)

I hated the baby face. He's supposed to look monstrous. Sure, a little bit more mass on TIH's Hulk would be nice but they got the face down pretty well. Unless you're doing the Professor, Hulk shouldn't look handsome, cute or anything in between. He should look brutish. Lee's Hulk needed to be a bit more cut as well. And fuhgedaboudit when it comes to the color of Lee's version. Kept reminding me of Who Framed Roger Rabbit what with a cartoon character interacting with live actors.

I loved Lee's Hulk design. Hulk to me seemed like a representation of the repressed rage Bruce felt and his inner child all at once. Him looking into the water spoke volumes for the character.

true, it's just that I hope that they don't pretend that the events of TIH doesn't exist and that regardless of who's playing Bruce Banner now, or what new interpretation that they have for him, that they still establish that Bruce Banner in this universe had still undergone the learning experience that he did in TIH.

Couldn't agree more...I'd be disappointed if they changed those two aspects. Very Buscema-ish.

ooo, you got me all psyched now!

I want to see hulk in a snowy location...that would be awesome!

Loved the overall design of Hulk in TIH; although if there was something I could change it was be the sheer amount of stirations that were given to the design. The vascularity was fine but the stirations drove me nuts.
