The Avengers The "I Believe In Mark Ruffalo!" Support Thread

I still think Hulk from Lee's Hulk looks great. When Nolte touches his face it's still pretty amazing. Even in the theater, I believed Hulk could be real.

How was the reaction at the Con to the Ruffalo news???

I know RDJ made everyone applaud, but was there any booing,
or did people seem genuinely happy?

People only booed when Fiege talked about Norton's absense. When Ruffalo came out, they responded in the same way when everyone else came out. Applause and cheers.

Feige has said that Ruffalo's Banner is gonna be like the Ultimates characterisation.

Now I don't read comic-books so I have no idea what the Ultimates version of Banner is like so could someone tell me what Ultimates Banner is like which should give an idea of what Ruffalo's interpretation will be like.

I hope people don't mean him saying actual dialoge all the time. I prefer him more silent and saying few words only when he needs to. Not saying stuff all the time. He's more intelligent in what he does.
They've tried that...three times. It hasn't worked. After all this time, the public still doesn't know anything about the Hulk character. And of course they don't really care about him. (Why would they?)

People want Hulk to be Hulk.

Exactly. It's not asking a lot. Let's put the Hulk character onscreen for the first time ever and see what happens. We already know how "The Incredible Bruce Banner" movie performs.

An example of how the general public feels about the Hulk character due to the way he's been treated is:

I'm not a massive fan of Hulk, because to me, he's more a plot device than actual character. And Banner annoys me.

See? The Hulk isn't even a real character to the general public. He's a walking special effect. The Banner character has been done to death. He is now as annoying as Lex Luthor. We've seen him enough already. Now how about developing the title character?

You're asking for too much. The Hulk requires alot of CG and a good amount of the budget. I can't tell you about how they'll do it in The Avengers, but in the past films, you seriously weren't expecting seeing the Hulk more were you? Banner is the man. Hulk is inside of him. They are two different ebings. But without Banner we wouldn't understand Hulk as much as be like you said, a walking special effect. I didn't feel that in Ang Lee's Hulk. They were both parallels to eachother. They were two different beings, yet they did share a connection.

I hate that they're changing banners personality, probably to fit ruffalos acting style.

Neurotic, paranoid and insecure.

That is not how Banner was portrayed by Norton in TIH. Sure the character has been recasted but the characterisation should be pretty much the same apart from a few changes.

You may have just explained why it's impossible to make a good Hulk film. They just can't afford it. I say just forget it if they aren't going to do it right. It's too frustrating so far. It would be like a Batman fan having studios just put out movies with the 60s campy version of Batman over and over. (And having people claim that "Batman doesn't work onscreen") Maybe stop hiring expensive actors to play Banner. That would help the cost.

We've gotten nothing but Banner so far and the public doesn't know anything about the Hulk. Banner isn't helping anyone know who the Hulk is. We could have an entire film with just Banner and people would understand Banner....why the assumption that the Hulk can't be developed by actually getting some screentime and dialog? (The way every other character in movie history gets developed)

I agree totally but nevertheless, according to you that's what Fiege said we're gonna get.

Maybe something happens to Banner in the movie [or has happened prior to the movie] to make him that way?

I reckon if they kill off Betty then that would make Banner go into a case of great depression and insecurity that will have Banner really wanting to be left alone to do his lab work just like Feige said.

Did we get a Spidey redesigned costume? No!
So don't redesign the Hulk!

Hmm, could be. Maybe he's under such intense incarceration/strutiny from S.H.I.E.L.D. that he becomes paranoid and neurotic - imagining that everones against him or something.

That's just it - we got a redesign for TIH so to establish that it wasnt Ang Lee's Hulk. If this is the same Hulk as the Hulk from TIH, then there should be no redesign [save for tailoring the face from Norton's to Ruffalo's], there should only be better, updated fx.

But I'm biased - TIH Hulk was the closest theyve come this far to giving me the Hulk of my childhood.

I hope they don't make banner a lunatic. I hate the way he was portrayed in ultimate avengers. I want to see something closer to the 90s animated series version of banner.

I dont think he was a lunatic per se. A bit unhinged, maybe. Desperate, certainly. Gripped with paranoia and an inferiority complex, definately.

But not a lunatic.

The studio didn't tailor the Hulk's face to Norton's, so there is no reason to try to tailor it to Ruffalo's.

No comic book artist in history has ever tried to make the Hulk's face look like Banner's. So there is no reason to make the movie Hulk's face look like Ruffalo!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!!!!!!!

Where the hell did I say anything about doing it for financial gain? I simply stated I'd like to see more resemblance between character and actor, it's not that big a deal, you're making it sound like I suggested they change him to pink or something.

You *didn't* say anything about financial gain; I did. My point was, making the Hulk look more like Mark Ruffalo isn't going to improve the movie...it's not going to make it more financially successful...and it's not going to cause audiences to like it more......
...so why do it?

Instead of using budget money to redesign the Hulk, just use the awesome-looking design they already have.

No artist in comic book history ever has, so why start now?

It's much too soon to make critical assessments of how Banner will be portrayed. I remember that nearly everyone was throwing fits about how Zak Penn, LL, Norton and Feige were drawing inspiration from the Bruce Jones run to set the tone of TIH. And the movie turned out great. So let's not get too carried away with this quite yet.

Ummm...actually they did.

Really? Other than matching scars and doing motion capture with expression, I just don't see it:

They didn't, they only used the mo-cap of his face. They even said in the BTS stuff that they specifically wanted Hulk to not look like Ed and to make him look like the quintessential Hulk from the comics.

EXACTLY.

So, since they did it right, let's just keep the same Hulk design, which gives them more time to do everything else right!

Well, I'm sorry but thinking like that, you're never gonna get the Hulk you want then. Marvel paid Mickey Rourke and such $500,000 for IM2. I don't know what the exact pay is, but at this point, it's not gonna matter if the actor is less known or not.

I can understand what you want, but they're never gonna shell out that much money for alll those stuff for Hulk. I just think cinematically, it's good to hold off on Hulk. Because you want him to turn, he shouldn't be there in every other scene. You need to know Banner too. I understand they're too different beings. But it's limited in that aspect. It just can't be done as much as you want it to be done. I think with more Hulk it would still fall into the trap of overshadowing Banner and just being there and relying more on the CG and not the actor. That would be just one of the criticisms. I think no matter what you do, you can't show too much of Hulk.

So I'd just go with whatever they're doing if I were you and stop hoping for all of this. Because you might be disapointed again. I'm more excited about the actors themselves coming together than I am about the action scenes with them, though I will be excited as hell to see that. But I think it will be a waste of Ruffalo or any actor playing the role if they rely more on Hulk.
