The Avengers The "I Believe In Mark Ruffalo!" Support Thread

Now...if for once...at the 4th attempt...they actually remember he is a talking character and not just a grunting plot device we might finally get a really good representation of the Hulk.

For me TIH has been the closest Hulk so far (we got a "Hulk Smash" out of him at least) but still lacking in terms of the actual personality (might not be much to it in some eyes, but he does have one). In Avengers, if (after several blows between them) he clobbers Thor hard enough to bring him to his knees and yells "Hulk is the strongest one there is!!" I would love it no end. Maybe that's just me tho...:cwink:

Only those who haven't read the comic would claim the Hulk doesn't have a personality. (i.e. those poor souls who think the TV and movie Hulks are all there is to him)

Ok, so we're partly talking Hulk dialogue.

Post 3 lines you'd like to see, or would guess will appear in the movie at some point, spoken by the Hulk.

"Hulk hate metal man."

"Hulk smash puny thunder God!"

"Hulk has (or) needs no friends..."

And just in case they're taking inspiration from Michael Bay and his 'humour'....

"Hulk have gas!" - Admittedly that's unlikely.......

LOL@the Michael Bay thing.

How many sentences? It can't be too much. He can't sound like Caesar or anything. Hulk is a brute so his voice should be the same as in the films. I just can't see him speaking in more words would work very well. That kind of neanderthal voice has been parodied numerous times throughout culture. I prefer the Hulk to do more with his actions rather than speak, and only says something when he needs to or to sound badass. Short and sweet.

It sure worked for Gollum. Jackson knew how you make an animated character work.

They have to get the voice right of course. The overly "angry all the time" voice from the recent animations seemed over the top to me. He sure wouldn't talk to Betty that way. And I hate the way they used "Huuuulk Sssmaaash!!!". Just have him say it...short and sweet and then smash whatever he was going to smash. It sounds dumb when they draw it out during a big "wind-up" or something.

Something else that occurred to me...speaking of Jackson. He spent 207 million on King Kong. This was a 3+ hour movie in 2005. Marvel spent 150 million for a 1 hour 54 minute TIH in 2008.

I'm not seeing anything here that makes me think they can't afford to put the Hulk onscreen enough to develop his character. It actually looks like Jackson got more out of his money since he was actually able to feature his title character much more 3 years earlier...and the consensus was that the effects in King Kong were better. Someone at Marvel was being ripped off (due to being new to the business perhaps?).

Maybe Marvel should hire Jackson? He spent 94 million in 2003 to make Gollum a real character (among other things in that movie) in Return of the King. That same year 137 million was spent on Hulk to give us another Incredible Bruce Banner.

Sheesh...hire Jackson and you can have the Hulk onscreen the whole movie for the same price.

Not here to troll, but i'm not happy about this casting. :csad:

Yeah, this is the support thread. Not the "**** Feige" or "**** Norton" or "Hulk has been crapped on and I don't like this casting" thread. This thread is for the discussion and support of Ruffalo's casting. Talk about it in the Hulk In The Avengers thread.

I don't know for some reason it's hard for people to read a thread and understand the meaning of it and don't undersatand that they can take their views to a thread actually pertaining to their views.

Here's what Ruffalo said on playing Banner:

The big climax of this weekend's Marvel Studios presentation at San Diego Comic-Con was Robert Downey Jr. introducing the new members joining Joss Whedon's The Avengers including Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo as the new Bruce Banner a.k.a. The Incredible Hulk.
After the event, Jeff Jensen at Entertainment Weekly had a chance to talk to Ruffalo about taking over the role, and here's what he had to say about the recent revelation:

"It was very exciting — and I realized I had some pretty big shoes to fill. Those were my heroes up there! I was a comic book fan growing up. I loved The Hulk and The Avengers — it’s just strange to be entering that world as an actor. I never would have imagined that before."

As far as the character itself, Ruffalo had this to say:

"He’s a guy struggling with two sides of himself — the dark and the light — and everything he does in his life is filtered through issues of control. I grew up on the Bill Bixby TV series, which I thought was a really nuanced and real human way to look at The Hulk. I like that the part has those qualities."

And some thoughts on taking over the role from his friend Edward Norton after the latter's public feud with Marvel:

"I’m a friend of Ed’s, and yeah, that wasn’t a great way for all that to go down. But the way I see it is that Ed has bequeathed this part to me. I look at it as my generation’s Hamlet."

He wasn't sure but he thought they would start shooting in the winter, which is likely next January or February.

I'm fine with having a beef with Feige for his growing track record of driving away talent, and a little bit with Norton for not making things ny easier on himself. However, I can't say that it's fair to have one with Ruffalo. He's handling this with class and professionalism, as he has done any time I've ever seen him outside of his roles.

It's good to also see that he grew up a fan of comics, and specifically the comics relevant to this movie.

I just hope he doesn't have a minor role. I feel if the four have to get together, they have to go on some journey themselves in some way to really join. All these guys are different and have their own baggage. Whedon is going to have to make them work together yet keep their individuality. Whedon gave a tidbit that saying none of these guys shouldn't be in the same room together yet they are. He seems to know what he's doing.

I am damn disappointed that Norton is out!,But I don't think it'll ruin much things and plus I feel Ruffalo is a damn good actor,Maybe not much compared to Norton But still damn good.

I am more concern for Hulk's design and use in the movie than Bruce anyway!....Although I think Ruffalo should get some nice screen time as Bruce I ofcourse prefer Hulk in action/screen alot more.

I'm happy Nortons gone. I just hope Ruffalo is good in the role.

sounds EXACTLY like old ed norton interviews, ca. anno 2007

Wow, slow down there cowboy! Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill....

What issue is this from?

I look forward to Ruffalo's Hulk, I hate how Norton was let go and what not but Ruffalo is a fantastic replacement and I'm sure he'll do a great job in the role.

I don't think he has a choice :cwink:

I'm completely on board with Ruffalo as Banner. I'm a fan of Norton but I think I might like this even better.

One of the many reasons why the Hulk vs Thor animated movie gets so much hate is the ease in which Hulk whupped Thor's ass. I mean, it's never been that way in the comics; whenever the two have mixed it up, it's always been a big deal as the two are so evenly matched.

Of course, the Hulk's got the greatest ever 'losing get-out-clause' with the whole 'madder he get's, the stronger he get's deal' so....................

Yea in the Hulk in the cartoons have been very different than the ones from the comics. In the cartoons Hulk is a force of nature of anger. He can't be stopped and he's not a hero. He's all monster. I was surprised in that Hulk vs Thor movie especially how Thor comes off inferior, like he's just a super-strong warrior. Never using his lighting bolt hammer blow with the full extent of his powers.

In the comics, they are evenly matched but Thor still can't take him.

I think they should give Hulk some sort of atomic powers, explaining that the fact that he keeps getting stronger and stronger and beating Gods and so forth is because the atomic bomb that bombarded him and created Hulk caused him to become a living bomb in a weird way. Special mutated cells were created that makes him release a great amount of energy from his body but there's some sort of the atomic string that keeps it from getting out and stays inside so that instead of him exploding, it just makes him change into the Hulk and he keeps getting bigger and bigger because more and more energy is generated but it stays around him. And there's this constant struggle inside of him like something wants to get out but another thing keeps it right back. The atomic string that keeps it inside is so strong that it can't get penetrated so almost no injuries can come from the outside too. But stress makes him generate even more energy, the atomic string/shield become even stronger to keep it inside.

I have to say I am very dissillusioned with Marvel at the moment for the way they are treating the Hulk character, it actually disgusts me the way they have dealt with all this and with Hulk being by far my main draw to this Avengers movie, it has effected my excitement for it a lot, to the point that I genuinly may not go and see it if any more **** goes on.

However, non of this is Ruffalo's fault and never will be, I really hope he'll do a good and am pretty sure he will. The only thing that pisses me off is its just going to ruin the continuity of it all, when I see Ruffalo as Banner, I will only think of him as a replacement for Norton, much the same way I did with Cheadle in IM2, I just couldnt get into the character as the same person, and this will really effect my enjoyment of Avengers too.

But good luck to Ruffalo, I hope he gets some good things to do isnt just there to make up the numbers.

Ya know, once in awhile Jamon you and I agree on something. Just once in awhile. :cwink:

"I’m a friend of Ed’s, and yeah, that wasn’t a great way for all that to go down. But the way I see it is that Ed has bequeathed this part to me. I look at it as my generation’s Hamlet."

Marvel > Shakespeare

There, I said it. One man versus decades of creative artists who takes what works, adds their best efforts and then passes it along to another artist who does the same. Decades of complex characterization mixed with modern sensibilities trumps ole William to be sure. Ruffalo is NOW involved with true high art! :cwink:

I say just wait and see Jamon. I have a good feeling from Ruffalo and Whedon. They could very well surprised all of us. That is if Banner is given enough to do, which I hope he is as a character.

My apologies dude. I didn't mean to take it out on you. You can have an opinion, it's just there's been alot of threads with topics but just veer off with nothing to do with the topic or just hatred.
