The I Work Black Friday Thread

I always thought the first 3 hours in a retail store on black friday would suck.
or does the whole day suck?

maybe someone should get some stories to on this thread about "Annoying A-holes on black friday" there should be some great stories.

Only thing more pathetic than the hordes who stalk the gates for opening time at these stores are the "return vultures" who hang back a few hours and linger around the store, waiting to swoop on the carrion of returned "wrong size" purchases which were blindly grabbed for the sake of grabbing anything at the store's opening time...

Rather than type out my entire horror story all over again, I'm going to quote myself from a previous thread...

the checkout line was so long that it somehow managed to wrap around the store and end in my department. I was then told by the store manager and a fire marshal that the checkout line was becoming a safety hazard, and I then had to somehow stop more people from getting in line. So now I have a large group of people standing in front of me, yelling at me because I've been ordered by the city not to let them stand in line. At this point it's 5pm, I've been at work for 13 hours and I won't be going home for another 7, and I've got my department manager breathing down my neck because even though it looks like we're going to make a sizable profit and make our sales projection, we might not top last year's sales and I've got to make up for that by pushing our dwindling supply of Norton Antiviruses. Oh, but one of my co-workers has gone missing, and as a supervisor in training who holds no authority or perks but all of the responsibility of a supervisor, I have to scour the store to find them. The PA system is broken, and the angry mob of people not allowed in the checkout line is growing larger because the server has crashed and the cashiers now to have ring everyone up with hand-written receipts that they don't know how to use. And I'm one of the employees who isn't taking drugs to get by. Oh, and I don't earn commission.

Hooray. Midnight is here and I'm off, but I had to park 2 blocks away from the store because they don't allow employees to use the parking lot on Black Friday, so excuse me while I walk my blistered feet down a dark street at night. I'll see you guys first thing tomorrow for the 12 hour shift that should be a walk in the park compared to this.

I'm working at midnight at Old Navy Outlet. And not just any Outlet. The one in Texas that has the most international clientele in the country. People bus to this outlet from Mexico.

It's gonna be crazy!

You're in Chicago? Lived there for 3 years. Which Tarje' do you work at?

:doom: :doom: :doom:

I work at the Crystal Lake Target which is 60 miles NW of Chicago =/

I will post my Black Friday story after my shift. It's going to be nuts seeing as our Toy Department is right next to the Electronics Department. The line was so huge last year it was nuts, so we just unlock all of the game cases to let people grab them. I'm going to take a picture of the line waiting infront of Target next week. There are usually 40-50 people waitiing.

The Wal-Mart I worked at was soo packed last black friday that I got in trouble for knocking people over. I'm 6'5", 300 pounds so I was pushing people just by walking. The hell of it is, there weren't really any good deals to be had. Kind of sad really

Shoe Dept at the town's only mall. But I'm lucky, I have a split shift...I only work 11am - 6:30pm.

do employees get first dibs at the deals or are they purely reserved the the customers?

So anyone else working the day after Thanksgiving? I work at Target and I am working from 4:00am to 1:pm in the electronics department. Oh what a joyous morning it will be!

Anyone else?

A fellow Target employee :wow:

I also work Black Friday, but my shift is 3:30pm - 12am as the Cart Attendant.

At our store, the Cart Attendant is what I like to call the Store's *****. Pretty much I'll have to bring in carts from outside and get stray ones in the store. But, I also empty the hanger bin at the front, check restrooms, take all defective items to the back room and put them in specific boxes, zone the "one spot", cover breaks for people on cashier lanes and the food avenue, and anything else the managers want me to do at the time.

I'll be working Black Friday at Best Buy from 8 am to 4 pm. Actually not a bad shift at all considering we have people starting at 3 am that day.

i started out doing that for about a year and then i was a cashier
i remember me and a couple of co workers thought it would be a great idea if we stacked every cart into one and roll it in. we had about 80 carts in one row :hehe: it blocked traffic and we almost got in trouble and that was our first week on the job we were all new

LOL! That would be awesome.

I prefer cart shifts to cashier ones. On carts, I can dictate my own pace and keep myself active without the negative aspect of cashiering (the guests).

The managers at my store I actually like. But, I definately can't wait til the day I don't have to work there anymore and can do something I actually want to do on a long term basis.

yea that management was awful they almost forced me to work hours that i cant do because i have other things to do and when my shift was over and if there was still a line i have to finish it. sometimes they tell me just to work another 30 mins and thats it
:cmad:

thank god i moved on

I think anyone who leaves a cashier or fast food job feels that way when they finally escape. It is a terrible existance :csad:

Same here. I just got my schedule today. Apparently I'm working from 2am to 10am. That's a bit of a cakewalk for me.
