I'm back after a week. Computer crashed and then it took a few days to get it confirmed. Main hard drive went out so I had to order a new one. Of course it was supposed to be here last Friday and arrived late today. Getting everything back up and running, installed and reset is a pain but at least I have a backup of everything on another drive... not the first, second time this has happened. Drives go bad and I have long since learned backups are precious.

At least I had a spare laptop I could borrow for the time being. Could have been so much worse.
I hate it when that happens, lol. Glad you're all set now.

Do you back up data or an image of the entire drive, or a combination of both?
Sorry, I work in IT and have an enquiring mind... :yay:

I back up using a syncing program. I do not image the drive but do back up specific files and folders. Though after this I might try imaging my entire C drive just in case.

Someone suggested to me using a Solid State Drive instead of a Hard Drive for the main drive. I will give you this word of caution though; it might not work at first, and you have to format the thing to be able to make it work properly.

Just clone the hard drive to the SSD and when you change it over, the computer won’t know the difference...

I read about what happened to Reek, and my God, that is terrible. I wish him recovery, and I'm glad his sister was not harmed.

And I wish for everyone and their families to stay safe.

I'll try doing that for my next SSD, in case I choose to use it as my main drive. The current one I have is 160GB.

This is actually the third SSD drive I have used. The first one still works, albeit on a computer I am not using and needs some other replacement parts because it just got too old. This was my second one and I'm not sure what happened to it. Might have been faulty to begin with and only took 3~ years to fail. Both of those were SATA connected. I just got this new one, an M.2, and looks like a smaller version of a RAM stick. Twice the space of my old SSD's but slightly cheaper now too. Very impressed with it. So much so I am thinking of buying a second.

I use Dropbox.
I have in the neighborhood of 8tb of data. That would go over my Comcast data cap :argh: roughly 4 times over a month. I did just buy another back up drive roughly 10tb in space to consolidate my other smaller drives. I have one 8tb that works as the primary backup but most of my smaller drives are older than 5 years and probably next to die.

Solid state is all my husband uses and he builds systems. :)

I've got two Synology NAS 4 bay enclosures. Both filled with 4x6Tb drives. I've got total storage of around 32Tb.
Which I use for my media server, ISO files, backups, FTP, user data and whatever else I want to throw on it.

So things like the user documents folder and so on are actually redirected to a custom named area.
Very little data is actually stored on the computers themselves, apart from what has to be like programs and games.

Would love to do that eventually but I can't justify the expense right now.
Oh it took me over 6-7 years to get to this current level...
Like you said this stuff ain’t cheap!

I'm surprised the tv show Supernatural hasn't had an episode that takes place in Marquette.

Who is Sam Cushing and why is he showing up on my feed?

i should probably back my stuff up more than i do

My 200gb microSD card died last week and I lost all of the data. Music, pics, audiobooks, videos. The music was the worst loss because some of those were movie score recording sessions that aren't officially available and in the case of some finding them again is either impossible or a pain in the ass. I lost my stephen fry narrated harry potter audiobooks too which aren't officially available in the US. :( I wish Scholastic and Bloomsbury would get over themselves and make both the Jim Dale and Stephen Fry versions officially available in both America and Britain. Neither region should be restricted to just one of the two.

Never thought of it that way...

The personalized tag thing has always seemed foolish to me, and I hate putting stickers of any kind of vehicle. But I hadnt really considered just how much personal info people make visible on their vehicles. Its funny when considered alongside all those idiots thinking Covid is a scheme to microchip them and track them. Theres really no need to have a conspiracy to track or spy on Americans, because Americans spread their private info to the public all the time.

Another similar thing, don't announce on social media you vacation plans or exact schedule. If you're account is public then you're inviting criminals to rob you when you are not home. Even if your account is private it could be broken into by a determined criminal. Ive also been told to not put pet pictures on social media because animal thieves will look for targets using social media accounts.

Oh that really sucks man. :csad:

Yeah, there’s a lot of info out there on us as it is and I don’t want to make it that much easier for criminals.
