Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Depending on how it’s perceived by the general audience, I can easily see this making numbers similar to ‘Logan’ but I don’t think it’ll do as well in foreign markets.

It'll do fine in foreign markets, Joker is just as iconic of a brand as Batman and Superman. Also SS made almost half a billion overseas.

It will do fine, but it wont put up the numbers needed to reach huge levels. It doesnt need to though just like Shazam didnt. With a budget that low and with a non-event film advertising campaign it could make $300 million WW and be a blockbuster hit in the eyes of the studio especially if the reviews are good.

I dont buy the tracking numbers because we are way to far out, but if they end up being in the ballpark then the studio will be dancing a jig. The film will be profitable by the second weekend (if you go by the 2x budget model) just in the US alone with a 50% drop. With good press and WOM who knows where it goes. Since it cost half as much if it approaches Logan's numbers in the US WB might go on a week long Hookers and Blow Bender ;) :hehe:

This is being compared to an indie film, not a global event similar to BvS or SS. I don’t think it’ll exceed $200M WW.

I still don't see this movie playing well to the general audience.

Same. I am expecting something similar to Blade Runner 2049. General audience will find this movie boring. Literally, there's not a single action scene, that i remember. It's all character driven, and drama. It doesn't feel like a typical comic book movie in any way.

This movie has more in common (in terms of script and concept) with movie like V for Vendetta than say, Logan (or Deadpool). So, it's collections will be similar.

V for Vendetta was ahead of it's time, but one thing that affected its overall box-office was its pushed release date. If you recall it was suppose to come out November 5, but there was a bombing in a train station around the same time so WB pushed the release by four months. Joker will do well domestically, but for those thinking its gonna crack $500M I think are a bit too optimistic. Audiences will complain about the lack of action, Batman, and the not so happy ending.

I hope this movie makes Marvel and DC try to make more like this: Indie vibe, no action, character driven, dramatic, realistic, etc. I would love to see a Luthor or Constantine film with the same style.

Darren Aronofsky's Batman was meant to be like that too, and he even had Joaquin in mind for the titular role.

“I think we were basically – whatever it is – 15 years too early. Because I hear the way they’re talking about the Joker movie and that’s exactly – that was my pitch. I was like: we’re going to shoot in East Detroit and East New York. We’re not building Gotham. The Batmobile – I wanted to be a Lincoln Continental with two bus engines in it,” Aronofsky told First Showing. “We were all about reinventing it and trying to make it more ‘Taxi Driver’ visceral. That was the whole pitch. But the toy people were like, ‘oh it can’t be a Lincoln Continental, you have to make a Batmobile.'”

And Aronofsky had a specific actor at the top of his wishlist. “I always wanted Joaquin Phoenix for Batman,” the director revealed. But Warners torpedoed the idea of his R-rated superhero film and instead focused on Nolan‘s Dark Knight saga.

Why do DC movies always get this kind of hate before they even get released? I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but it's always the same. It's so tragic it's kind of funny.
Seem to remember Captain Marvel getting its share of hate prior to its being released (and after.)

If that movie had to be sacrificed for they to give us The Dark Knight and Ledger, then it had to be done. I still would love to see Arofnosky made something for the genre. If this movie success, i hope he joins DC (I doubt he would like to work for Marvel).

Yeah, I'm an Aronofsky fan, but I wouldn't have wanted that over the Nolan films - which are still my favorite in the genre. He was meant to do The Wolverine, but he left that - not because of creative reasons, but for personal ones, so he's shown a lot of interest in these kinds of films. Him on Lex Luthor or The Question would be amazing.

Very arthouse/indie. I'm expecting more "Taxi Driver" than your typical comic book movie
