Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Darren Aronofsky's Batman was meant to be like that too, and he even had Joaquin in mind for the titular role.

“I think we were basically – whatever it is – 15 years too early. Because I hear the way they’re talking about the Joker movie and that’s exactly – that was my pitch. I was like: we’re going to shoot in East Detroit and East New York. We’re not building Gotham. The Batmobile – I wanted to be a Lincoln Continental with two bus engines in it,” Aronofsky told First Showing. “We were all about reinventing it and trying to make it more ‘Taxi Driver’ visceral. That was the whole pitch. But the toy people were like, ‘oh it can’t be a Lincoln Continental, you have to make a Batmobile.'”

And Aronofsky had a specific actor at the top of his wishlist. “I always wanted Joaquin Phoenix for Batman,” the director revealed. But Warners torpedoed the idea of his R-rated superhero film and instead focused on Nolan‘s Dark Knight saga.
That's funny you mention that because, tbh, I'd love for Phillips himself to just straight up adapt the Year One script, cause I feel like he could easily nail that style if Joker is at all an indication

I would like Phillips to do Year One and The Dark Knight Returns, or a Luthor film. Dude seems to be truly passionate of his work and really want to make good films. This movie it's his baby (he had the idea, pushed it to Venice, etc) and he freaking nailed the style for Gotham, imo.

And you guys are right. Word i'm hearing is this movie doesn't feel like a comic book movie at all. Even Logan had hints of a typical comic book movie (Like the final battle), but this one is VERY grounded, no action, and a lot of drama, which is perfect for a character like the Joker. This movie truly looks and feels like something special.

I know some people are gonna go in and some are gonna take their kids thinking this is like a Suicide Squad deal, but you honestly have to have some comic book knowledge of Joker to really understand it I'm gonna assume.

Thank you, toy people.

To me, Phoenix as Joker is more interesting than Phoenix as Batman (even if Batman was was going to be portrayed with a very grounded approach.)

It's entirely possible audiences weren't ready for Aronofsky's YEAR ONE, and arguably still may not be. That script and concept was intriguing, but could have set Batman back for quite some time.

Batman doesn't need all those artsy experiments till they exhaust the traditional take. Joker was perfected in TDK and I don't think there's much room to go for him, except for something more experimental. I was advocating to let Joker rest a bit. Let pop culture transform enough. Alternative was, of course, to go for something deviant like with this film.

It'd honestly be kinda wild if Phillips really did adapt the Year One script and Phoenix would be the first actor to play Batman AND Joker lol

A great interesting elseworlds perverse story would be one where Batman was responsible for The death of Robin’s parents but he adopts Robin as his own child, grooms him, raises him, trains him and then during some point in the story, Robin learns the truth and confronts Batman and his sick twister philosophy of vigilantism and violence. Robin nearly kills Batman but Batman kills him. Batman is crippled permanently from Robin’s attacks on him and then has to live the rest of his days watching Gotham burn

I dont get the appeal of stuff like that at all. Same as all of these demon /Punisher styled alternative comic book versions of Batman that DC has been publishing the last couple of years.

The best Elseworlds stuff has always been the stories were you recognize the heroes instantly, but the setting/world looks different.

Tbf, I really enjoy the Batman:Vampire series, just for the sake of the artwork and the fact that Batman as a vampire just ... I mean, it kinda makes sense in a way lol. But I get what you mean .

Yeah, but those stories, well at least the two first ones, has a Batman still wanting to be the hero. You still like the guy in the second one. Not too fond of the third volume.

It's so cool hearing about how much effort Joaquin seems to have put into this. Feels like he treated it with the same amount of care he's put into films like The Master, Her and You Were Never Really Here

Marc Maron talked a little bit about the Joker movie.

It would be incredible if Maron could get Joaquin on his podcast... but it ain't happening. :funny:

I don't agree that this movie isn't comic accurate.

I think these comments are off-base. It's just not a typical comic adaption.

I'm so amazed with what they did with Joker's makeup for this film. They've managed to take Ledger’s look and evolve it to its next logical step but also bring something entirely new to the character that I'm sure will become a staple look going forward.
