Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

It's a society of moral decay verging on moral and civilized collapse. One generally lacking in compassion, empathy, and understanding.

Downloading the score on Spotify now, can’t wait to give it a listen.

I didn't really like the movie all that much but not for all the hate and complaints its getting.

Basically, Todd Phillips made a deconstructionist take on the Joker and Joker-like archetypes. Phoenix is a more realistic and disturbing version of the Joker. I think the reason people are scared of it is because it seems more palatable and realistic. It's like Phillips is tapping into fears people have today. But I mean...don't good stories do that? Shouldn't stories be made that tap into what we are afraid of and show them front and center?

Also, it's just a movie at the end of the day. It's just make believe. Movies and art should be allowed to explore subject matter and things that make us uncomfortable.

So why didn't you like it then?

To me, it's far and away from being a definitive take on the character. I think the comic book aspects and connections are superficial at best.

If this movie even had no DC or Joker connection, would it even be getting a fraction of this amount of mainstream hype? To me, what Phillips did here was made a psychological crime drama really.

It's a more daring, bold experimental one-off. It has little resemblance to anything resembling Joker to me.

I mean look, I didn't like Bullseye in Daredevil Season 3 for similar reasons. They massively reinvented the character so much it almost didn't resemble Bullseye to me anymore. I'm not a huge fan of deconstructionist takes of classic and iconic characters.

I think you could've done away with all the comic book parts and still ended up with a really disturbing, dark crime drama. Probably wouldn't have a $100 million opening weekend though.

This movie is gonna have like a 90% drop on its second weekend, general audiences will be split with many basically feeling they've been betrayed and that the movie is pointless. Someone in AwardsWatch said it best: it's a supervillain origin story about Batman's archnemesis... and he's never even going to fight Batman. "All those 2 hours of misery for nothing?"

I'm excited to see this film because I like the message it's setting up, but the GA is not gonna eat this up.

I don't think the drop will be that big. I saw Ad Astra and thought that was the most boring movie i've seen all year. I had people in my row sleeping but yeah that movie dropped under 50% surprisingly. One think Joker has going for it is the controversy factor and the intense reactions to the film afterwards.

That movie did not open at the numbers Joker will open. The drop will be ridiculously dramatic in this case. This is gonna be ridiculously frontloaded.

It was never supposed to be a definitive take on the character. The positioning of this film as a one-off, Elseworlds, original story (not an adaption of existing comic books) has been crystal clear from the start.

That's fine. I still didn't love it. It people love it and hail it as a masterpiece, more power to 'em.

No it's not lmfao, it'll get like a B+ cinemascore and drop like 50% on weekend 2. It also helps that Gemini Man is shaping up to be a mega bomb

It's not a big deal. He said people got offended easily and they proved his point... by getting offended.

It's not a tragedy. It's a comedy.
Stop.

No one got offended. People pointed out what Todd Phillips said was stupid and factually incorrect. Pointing out that someone is wrong isn't being "offended"

And for what it's worth, and I mean no offense, THe Vile One dislikes most things. I wouldn't take his reaction as anything

Omg the soundtrack is amazing! Sounds like something from a Denis Villeneuve movie.

I'm looking for merch from the movie like artbooks and Funko pops but there's none :csad:. So sad.

Wow, that Kimmel interview was cringe to see. I used to respect Kimmel after his Vegas shooting video. I can’t see myself looking at him that way again.

Offense is not new and a majority of things people claim are offensive don't actually suffer

Chappelle still sells out arenas, Bill Burr, JOE Rogan still are hugely successful. Even Louis CK, an admitted sex criminal, still is making bank. Politicians, of any party, with multiple allegations are doing fine. A lot of very popular comedies have multiple rape, gay, and race jokes. Clearly being "offensive" isn't that big of a deal

It's just this weird little narrative about a bunch of cry babies. And it's not like offense is new. Andrew Dice Clay and Eddie Murphy got plenty of blowback back in the day for their jokes.

To paraphrase what Rick Gervais said: Say what you want to say, then it's up to you to care about whether people get offended or not. Like seriously, sack up
Isn’t Gervais the same guy who complained about liberals “calling him a Nazi” for his jokes?

I've already prepared myself for this to be a "what if" take on the character so I'm not that concerned with how close it is to the source material. Tomorrow's the big day and I'm pumped!
Yeah I still don't get why that seems to be a sticking point for some people

I always took it as an Elseworlds tale the second the first trailer premiered. I don't know why some people are expecting this to be stick really close to comics' canon or for it to be definitive origin for the Joker. Like Todd Phillips said in one of his interviews in Venice, see it as one of the "multiple choice" stories that TKJ referenced.
