Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

He has 3 distinct laughs in the film, and the high pitch one is definitely up there as one of the greats. It was an interesting choice to not play it as his natural laugh though. It’s only ever used as Arthur’s way of fitting in. So what is the most Joker-sounding is essentially a fake laugh.

His other 2 laughs are pretty normal sounding. Would not be a fan if that became the go-to if he reprises the role.

They still sound pretty haunting to me though, because it feels like he's in pain. I don't think I've heard people laugh in pain that much in films, so they're pretty unique to me that way.

Do you guys agree that Joaquin has the best Joker laugh in live-action so far? It's sooo damn close to Mark Hamill's and has a lot of variations.

Nope, still think Ledger's is the best. Its so satanic and also gleeful. Phoenix gets a comfortable second place to his, even though half of the laughs sound fake e.g. in the comedy club. Nicholson's is decent. Romero's was wonderfully camp and fun. Leto's sounded like a dying donkey half the time. Sometimes Leto sounded like he was saying "AH AH AH AH" instead of Ha ha ha ha.

Wrong post on the other thread. :oldrazz:

Ledger's laugh has a satanic quality unequaled in live-action IMO. His laugh is a mixture of feeling amused and enjoying the mayhem he causes. Phoenix has more room for his laughs, but they sound coming from a man with some illness, not a criminal mastermind.

I dunno, I thoutht both Leto and Ledger's laugh sounded way too forced for me. Sure, Leto's is the worse of the two, but both sound forced and unnatural.

Once he stops his medications and embraces his insanity, his laugh is less painful, it sounds as if he is laughing only when he thinks he's happy, which happens only in last 15 minutes of the movie, I consider that laugh to be his true Joker laugh, which is not connected to illness.

Yeah. Choosing which version has the best laugh is really a matter of preference. Phoenix's laugh is for someone who experiences mental illness while Ledger's is from an anarchist and demon. Romero has a good laugh too, TBH. I prefer Ledger simply because his character is Joker in true form.

I wouldnt say they are normal sounding. It's like he's choking and gagging. The laugh causes him pain.

The first time we see him with the therapist, that **** was horrible.

For me, Ledger still has the best Laugh. As The Joker said, it sounds satanic and gleeful at the same time. Every time i hear it, whether it's during the hostage tape, or when batman punches Joker at the police station, I get chills! It's umatched in my opinion, and still the most effective. Phoenixs laugh comes in after that, then Nicholsons, then romeros, and then whatever the hell letos was.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Arthur is in the comedy club listening to the comedian. His laughter is out of sync with the rest of the crowd, as though he doesn't actually understand why it's funny and is laughing just to (unsuccessfully) fit in with "normal people". Even the notes he takes have nothing to do with the comedy itself; they're about how he can make himself more appealing to the audience.

To me, in live action Ledger and Nicholson still have the best laughs. Nicholson just naturally has a menacing cackle, and he was able to amp that up into a really good Joker laugh. Ledger's laugh had that explosive, at times ferocious quality to it that almost seemed like a fusion of Cesar Romero and a demon. I always feel like his "whoo hoo hooo" when he's dangling the Batman mask in the hostage video sounds so Romero. Romero definitely deserves a lot of credit for setting the template for what we even expect a Joker laugh to sound like, as I think his influence is there in both Nicholson and Ledger's laughs.

I'm not sure how I feel about Phoenix's laugh when it comes to comparing Joker laughs. It absolutely worked great for the performance, but the context of it being an involuntary tick kind of makes it harder for me to judge it against other proper Joker laughs. It probably sounds the closest to Hamill's laugh, which I could definitely see being a plus for some people. I just want to see him own that laugh. Much like how I want to see him play a fully formed Joker. But probably not in a sequel to this movie. That's another discussion, haha.

And the less said about Leto, the better.

From a live action perspective, it's Phoenix, easily. Although he has many variations throughout the course of the film, there's something sinister and painful in his laugh--even when he fully becomes Joker. Ledger has moments of a great laugh, but it's almost forgettable because his mannerisms are so theatrical and Joker like. Nicholson is Nicholson. Leto wasn't the Joker to me so he doesn't count.

Mark Hamill will always have the best Joker laugh in my humble opinion. Yeah, yeah, he’s not live action, but it just is the Joker. He’s still what I hear when I read a comic.

I still need to see Phoenix, but until I do, Ledger is my number 1.

The guys at Box office forum are going crazy with the predictions now since Joker is holding so well. Reminds me of Aquaman over there right now.

edit: If their predictions hold...Joker will beat both Gemini Man and Addams Familys weekend gross halfway through Saturday. It should beat both of their weekends COMBINED. You read that right. Joker is going to destroy the Deadline prediction ($42 million) because it is tracking at $20 million for just today. You got people over there saying $60-70 million second weekend could be/is happening. That puts $400 million domestic in play...

No clue how the numbers work...but even the cautious ones are gawking at the numbers.

Positive word of mouth is helping overcome some of the overly negative reviews a bit.

I love all the Joker laughs for different reasons, aside from maybe Leto. One Phoenix laugh I really dug was in THAT scene after THAT happens. It’s like he finally lets go and just has a natural, normal chuckle to himself — very different from his earlier, painful laughing fits.

Nicholson’s best laugh is in the famous “Boo!” scene before Batman crashes through the skylight. I love that ****.

Keep attacking the film...it just makes the box office greater.

What is the link to this most recent tracking and discussion ?

I finally seen Joker and I loved it. I thought this movie had the best depiction of Gotham in live action as the movie did a great job with showing how disgusting and bleak Gotham city is. I loved Joaquin Phoenix performance and it never felt that Arthur was a character, he actually felt like real person to me. The laugh is both creepy and hilarious. I would give this movie a 9.5/10.

I just liked that it was on the more realistic side of things rather than doing a bunch of unrealistic stunts and action. Really felt like you were watching something that was real. Also the violence wasn't over the top like Deadpool and the movie was pretty tame when it came to depicting violence.

I don't really get all the controversy that the movie is attracting and its weird that some folks think that there will be a large increase in violent crimes because of this movie which is complete nonsense. The movie never tries to condone Arthur's actions nor present him as a "good guy". In fact the audience is meant to be distrubed by Arthur and that every rational character that is seen in this movie is disgusted by him. To me its just mainstream media trying to get clicks and views by acting like this movie will encourage people (particularly teens) to be more violent (which is what happened to video games in the 90's).
