I really liked the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest idea of him in Arkham.

Or maybe they could do another possible story for Joker, multiple choice? But that may just confuse the audience.

I'm really not into the idea of doing a One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest type thing tbh. It strikes me as being too predictable, and also too limiting for the Joker character. He was already restricted in the original, in a sense, seeing as we were only witnessing the gradual birth of his persona, so now I just want to see a fully-formed Phoenix Joker out in the wild and flexing his flamboyant new brand of evil.

The only thing that could make me somewhat interested in the idea of a caged up Joker, is if they took a leaf out of Grant Morrison's ASHOSE and had him instigate a full-scale riot, with him acting as the ring leader.

I'm down with the Cuckoo's Nest idea as long as at least two or three other famous Batman villains are some of the inmates like Two-Face, Ivy, Scarecrow, etc.

I also want to see his portrayal of Joker to be more traditional this time around as well.

One quagmire that I hope the sequel can avoid is the temptation to provide any definitive answers to most of what went on in that first movie. As time goes on, I think the original will only prove itself to be a richer film for retaining a lot of the ambiguity and interpretation as to which aspects of the story were real, and which aspects were ultimately imagined.

Phillips as the sole writer though...

Remember those news last month that said he was only co-writing it. It doesn't say who is the other writer(s?), maybe Silver comes back. I also noticed it only says Writer and Producer, wonder if he will direct again or maybe someone else.

The first is a very well done movie with a great performance at the heart of it...

And I have zero interest in returning to the world of Arthur Fleck.

I have to say the idea of the Joker sitting in Arkham Asylum for a whole film sounds tedious and frustrating to me. The first film ends as he becomes the Joker and arguably he still hasn't fully developed into the character as he only seems to realise who he can be in the final moments.

Joker still feels like chapter 1 of what should be a saga. I think the sequel should be more like a Scorcese gangster film and Joker evolving into more of a villain.

To be honest, Joker seemed to be a good movie about a mentally ill man who happened to be a clown. It didn’t really feel like Joker until maybe the very last scene. Even then, I just cannot see Arthur growing into the force of nature that we know from the comics.

How about the cowardly, insecure and pencil necked husband from the flashback scenes in The Killing Joke? Could you see him evolving into the guy who shoots Barbara Gordon, takes nudie pics of bloodied, battered body and then torments her father with them?

I think that’s the thing. He wasn’t mentally ill prior to the acid bath in Killing Joke. That trauma unlocked a psychosis in that story. But in Joker, he was always ill. It wasn’t just “one bad day” for Arthur. It was an entire “bad life” that he had been dealt.

Yeah so think how unhinged he could get then. What little tether he had to reality and goodness was utterly destroyed and then he burned it to the ground and peed on the ashes. Hell the one person in the world who made him really happy he friggin shoots on live TV. This guy could become the stuff of nightmares.

The moment in the stairwell is Arthur's falling in the vat of acid.

Something seems off about all of this though. WB doesn't low key do stuff like this...they would be shouting it from the rooftops. Joker made a billion dollars and had a budget of almost nothing it is one of the greatest successes around and yet no pomp and circumstance and a huge media blitz? (yes I know rumors have been around but still...this is break the internet type stuff) Seems weird for them...

I wonder if they were hoping this wouldn't leak until Fandome...

    Is this something official ?
Because Scorsese's listing as a producer is quite interesting after his comments about nearly producing the first movie:

“I thought about it a lot over the past four years… and I decided that I didn’t have the time for it.”
    [...]
“It was personal reasons why I didn’t get involved. But I know the script very well.
    [...]
For me, ultimately, I don’t know if I make the next step, which is to this character developing into a comic book character.” [...] “He develops into an abstraction. That doesn’t mean it’s bad art. It could be, but it’s not for me.”

Made me wonder too, but Scorsese has always been respectful when talking about Joker, so maybe he just liked the pitch of the sequel or changed his mind? Idk, tbh. Source is Production Weekly. Hope is true, tho. Maybe he finally watched the movie and liked it.

I still think there is a good chance this could be tied to The Batman universe. Hopefully they’d handle the crossover better than Venom 2

Joker 2 should be about Arthur becoming The Clown Prince of Crime Gary should become Gaggy confrontation with Batman until the third part

You just highlighted exactly why the origin in Joker > the origin in TKJ. But I'm glad either tale leaves things open for interpretation.

Hence my worries over whether this sequel is even a good idea...

I’m taking that as a confirmation of a sequel. I still think the original is my favorite comic book movie of the last ten years. The only DC movie that compares to TDK.

The Joker 2 rumors have been coming from the trades, I think it’s just a matter of when they’re ready to announce it. The story is probably being worked on as we speak

That would be cool, with Phillips and Phoenix making surprise appearances.
