Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Essentially, this was WB’s attitude towards this movie:

Then:

“Yay! A Joker movie! Joker is popular! That means loads of money for us!”

Now:

“What do you mean making the Joker a domestic terrorist and the protagonist is controversial? Run away! Run away!”

Absolutely no forward thinking, other than about dollar signs. This film needed a strong and clear marketing message, understanding the potential controversy it could cause. The conversation could have been steered properly. It could have been a valuable tool for proper discussion about the state of America.

Instead it’s rapidly becoming an entirely predictable cluster****, and the film is being targeted - instead of the cultural morass it’s seeking to highlight.

This.
I dont know what they all thought, if they really had just this tunnel vision where they havent for one second thought about the consequences of the movie.

And now we are in a bad position in which also nobody seems to be able to understand the problem.
You have many in the dc fandom being so incredible tone deaf dumb with this stupid memes and comparisons to john wick, punisher or ****ing hell IT to kind of justify the movies idea.
Which is just dumb as heck and hurts the movie and the fandom.

We look like god damn idiots when a few crazy people go out and whine about how it is okay for a movie that has a supernatural being that poses as clown to kill people...but not a grounded and incredible realistic movie about a mentally instable man who snaps and turns towards violence.

This whole movie should have been tackled a lot smarter by the marketing and everybody involved.
Going "why is it okay for john wick to kill 300 people but not for this joker" is just a dumb way to tackle valid concerns.

Yep. Sad but true.

A further point is this... imagine that this very same Joker, with exactly the same character, motivations, actions and morality was presented in the context of a Batman movie. Would there be any outcry whatsoever?

I don’t believe so.

It’s the positioning of the Joker as protagonist that’s the issue here. I was uncomfortable with that right from the get go, because I knew this would end up being the reaction to it.

And WB are now getting scared of that reaction, and are taking all the wrong steps (as per usual).
It's your perception that he's a protagonist.

And WB haven't done anything wrong really. They've played it like a fiddle other than making a statement that they didn't have to be make. Anticipation is sky high still from all quarters for and against the film.

I think the hand-wringing on both sides about a movie very few people have seen at this point is silly and overblown but.... yeah.

Does Todd Phillips think a maniac dressed as John Wick went and killed a dozen people?

Where's the maniac who dressed as Joker? The guy in the tactical gear and the orange hair doesn't really fit the description.

Dude is frustrated. People are judging his movie with a political lens without seeing it first and indirectly accusing him of possibly starting a mass awakening of terrorism. Obviously he's not going to respond well to that.

Holmes calling himself Joker is like me painting my face purple and calling myself Kermit the Frog. It has no bearing on the actual character, so I don't see how that's a point against Todd Phillips.

He should know why his movie isn't being held to the same standard as John Wick, it's not hard

I haven't seen it so I'm not going to assume it's glorifying the Joker, but I’m also not fragile about some people potentially having some qualms with it. Guess that makes me crazy

I think life is secretly screwing me over. The theater I previously called to inquire about IMAX screenings for Joker, which said they weren't sure as of two days ago...now has tickets for Joker. Right after I already bought a ticket at a normal theater.

Clearly it's time to upgrade.

It's really not.

Protagonist - Wikipedia

You're viewing the film within a prism of there must be a Protagonist and there must be an Antagonist. Or that there must be an absolute of either for the entire film.

Dare I say this isn't your standard comic book film when everything is simple.

at the end of the day this whole fake controversy is just gonna help this film since it has kept the film in the spotlight weeks after reviews have come out

something alot of films have trouble doing(keeping momentum)

How is Arthur not the protagonist? The wretched elements of society are antagonistic to him and the plot is his journey/descent, and the trailers even make him out to be an accidental antihero of a reactionary movement.

This might surprise some of you, but there have actually been villain protagonists in media before.

Anyone remember Natural Born Killers and American Psycho for instance? Just because Arthur will come from a sympathetic background doesn't mean the audience will continue to feel sorry for him once he snaps and starts doing horrible things.
