Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Every concern I had with this movie was proven right in various degrees, but despite that JP carries the whole movie, making them much dimmer than they should be.

Props to the soundtrack, camera work and editing, in that order. The weakest part was the script still.

It is, taking everything into account, a very good movie, but I'm unsure if a second view will highlight the problems within the movie or deepen the entrancing of the experience.

Having seen the film, I can see why people would walk out of it not having enjoyed it.

But no one can say credibly this film is not almost impeccably made. That’s what’s bothering me. There’s an inherent bias in about 50% of the negative reviews because their writers are not mature enough to deal with what the film presents.

I did not enjoy watching the film at all. I may see it again but will watch it sparingly. I nevertheless give it a 4-5/5. It was powerful filmmaking that has made me feel how I feel - disgusted, upset and frankly a little more dubious about people in the world.

Seems to me most of them are much older than most people here or have been at their jobs quite a bit longer.

Exactly: you know what? Frakking Adolph was reportedly a good father. Was he less a monster because of that? No. But that's even more scary to know that, because it mean there could be an evil bastard in our mirror, just awaking to wake up. It's important to know it, to talk about it.

Adolph who?

Honestly, the critic reception was to be expected, biased or not. Don't let that affect your opinion of the film once you go see it and then draw your own conclusions.

Just saw it. Good movie but nowhere near the second coming of Citizen Kane as some overenthusiastic critics tried to sell it.
It' a bit overlong and besides Phoenix's performance and the art direction I don't think there is something outstanding about this movie.
Just my two cents.

Seeing this tomorrow and hyped but I’m getting the vibe from those of you who’ve seen it that this is one of those things that you watch once, it leaves an impact but not something you wanna rewatch again due to its content. Kind of like Requiem for a Dream (loved that movie but i will never watch it again lol)

Am I right in this assessment?

Might be a few spoilers in there for those really sensitive to that, Phoenix and Larry the cinematographer is pretty funny.

OT but I saw it once and never wanted to see it again. Such a depressing movie.

The theater was full btw and the movie received a good round of applause at the end
Is this a american thing. Ive never experienced it here in the UK and i usually go to the weekend showings. Not even the most hyped (Dark knight, Endgame) got a applause. The audience just casually make there way out of the cinema lool

Surprisingly, for the first time I've ever had in a showing here, some folks behind me and my best friend clapped when the credits start rolling.

I guess it might be a premiere thing?

93% audience score at Rotten Tomatoes. 8.6 from Filmaffinity. 4/5 letterboxd. Seems like people are enjoying the film.

I take it you didn't enjoy it then. :o
No, I absolutely loved it. It's the best DC movie since BB.

DC has had some ups and downs for me, but this one really knocked it out of the park. I haven't been this jazzed leaving a CBM since BB. I'm shocked by how much it worked for me.

There was only one part that I hated, and it was a music choice Todd Phillips made, and it really messed up that scene, but other than that, the movie is f'n brilliant. Loved it!

Please, don't make me laugh. I'm so done with this horse s***. As if no black actors have ever been nominated or won an Oscar before.
The award for best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress have been awarded a combined 349 times. Of those 349 winners, only 14 have been black. If you cant recognize how disproportionate that is, then you're being willfully ignorant to the reality of the hurdles black actors have to navigate which white actors do not.

So happy to hear you had a good time.

I was thinking about the movie's implied themes, and can't get around the fact that people call it dangerous.

It should actually open people's eyes about helping people with mental illness before they go bezerk. About showing some empathy and reaching out, helping people who have problems.

It's actually eye opening, and critics calling it dangerous should stop feeling self-important while they're waxing poetic on Twitter about our " offensive times" and first world problems and think for a minute about unfortunate people who didn't have a normal upbringing and need attention.

The RIGHT kind of attention, though. It speaks volumes about our times when people talk about "the toxicity of the white male" while reviewing the movie, and completely ignore the fact that it is about mental illness and about how something should be done for these people BEFORE it is.

I'm not justifying his crimes in the movie, just saying he should have received more kindness and compassion BEFORE his turning point. Which is actually a powerful lesson, and critic who only see the character as a toxic white male should think about that for a while.

Yeah, I was just pulling your leg, man. :cwink:

Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Doesn't change the fact that Jordan's performance in Black Panther wasn't Oscar (nomination) worthy. Martin Freeman's wasn't, as well, so relax.
