That's not really the heart of where the story's ambiguity would have its biggest impact though. The movie is a specific narrative on the journey this man takes before finally snapping. That ending sequence is the final stop. The ambiguity doesn't matter at that point.If there’s another movie with Phoenix as the Joker it will confirm that the events at the end of this movie happened, rather than potentially all being in his head as a fantasy. Ambiguity gone.
