Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

The success of this film is surreal. I never thought audiences would embrace such a dark and twisted narrative so much. Hopefully this means other studios won't be afraid to take chances with their characters--looking at you Disney and Sony.

It could also be a lightning in a bottle thing and they try to replicate it and fail.

I'm guessing some WB exec is backing a dumptruck full of money up into Phoenix's driveway right now.

An appropriate Phoenix response

Sony should now learn that audiences will show up for a good film regardless even if it's Rated-R.

Arad being so adamant on Venom being PG-13 is ridiculous, even more so now that Carnage, one of the darkest and most violent Marvel villains is in the next one.

To be fair, I don't think Venom would have been a good movie had it been rated R.

I thought that "Venom" was a fun and good movie even with the PG-13. It's a fun popcorn movie with a likeable lead. It works for what it set out to do and be.

Yup. Exactly. Since he is our protagonist, you have a natural inclunation to want to try to sympathize or root for him. Like Walter White, even when he does bad things, you try to justify it in your mind until it gets to a point where you cant justify it anymore and you realize you have been rooting for a rotten human being this whole time. I really reflected on myself after I left this movie, any film that can do that is a big success imo haha

And the crazy thing is that for every person that point where he crosses the line could be anywhere. I am pretty sure my dad was fine up until he kills the dude in his apartment. Me I was out way before that.

I agree the movie they did make would not have been much better had we seen Venom biting off some heads or whatever.

A good Venom movie would have been more of a horror/thriller IMO.

Anyway, not to get too off topic. I hope Joker's success inspires more R-rated CBM's.

Yeah, there are plenty of great characters that would work amazingly in an R-rated CBM. An R-rated Venom could be great in theory, but I have no faith in the creative team involved at Sony. I'm not looking forward to any of their movies, at least nothing related to this Spider-Verse-Without-Spider-Man thing they're doing.

It's come out at the right time. For all the throwbacks and homages to those glorious films of the '70s, this is still somehow very much a film of its time.

Leto is like the new Nick Cage or Cuba Gooding Jr. Wins an Oscar and then torpedoes his career with poor choices (well, just one poor choice really, but oh what a bad one).

He wasn't very good in Blade Runner 2049 either (and there were additional stories of him staggering around "blind" on set to be "method"). I feel like his Oscar win (which wasn't unwarranted) inflated his ego and pretentiousness even further and his subsequent performances have suffered as a result.

For me, the biggest revealing thing about Arthur just not being a very good human being, besides his self-pitying tirade that Murray calls him out on, is the fact that all of his happiest and most giddy moments are after he's just brutally murdered someone. The first two dudebros on the subway you could argue were self-defense, but the third one he hunts him down and puts him down like a wounded animal. After being in shock for like, thirty seconds, he starts dancing, then goes marching more confidently than ever down the hall and bangs Zazie Beetz (in his fantasies, anyway). Later, he murders Randall like a total savage, and then gets all dressed up and goes dancing down the steps being the most carefree we've seen him the whole movie. He's all delighted with himself immediately after shooting Murray, and even more gleeful riding in the back of the police car watching the riots and the city burning. Causing death and destruction is the thing that finally makes him happy. He's a worse person than Walter White (IMO).

Truly remarkable. I always felt this movie would be a big hit but I never thought it'd top this list. Guess we can officially put to rest the idea that audiences just don't want dark comic book movies.

Work has been crazy so I haven't gotten the chance to see this in theaters yet unfortunately but I'm excited to catch it in a matinee in a few weeks or, worst case scenario, I'll buy it day-of when it comes out on digital.

Yeah exactly.

The sad part though is that studio execs never seem to learn.

The notion that R-Rated/Dark movies cant make money is a myth.

Make the movie great or enjoyable and it will make money.

Yep. Make good movies and the audience will respond. Deadpool, Logan, Joker all rated R and Logan and Joker are pretty dark and all popular and successful. The Dark Knight, while PG-13, is still even pretty dark and acclaimed as one of the all-time great CBMs.

Watched Joker again.. still incredbile and its my second favourite movie of the year.

Would be really interesting to hear your thoughts on it, I find you to be generally negative but always fair with your points and back them up so I've taken to giving them some value even when I disagree.

Do yourself a favour and see it in the cinema though if times permits, it's definitely worth it.

Yeah, it's not like the same studio made the Oscar-winning Spider-Man animated movie or anything.

Deadpool 2 only made $2M more than the first one?

Yes but it did that with the Once Upon A Deadpool Re-release which includes around $42,5 million from China.

So you can argue Deadpool 2 is actually behind Deadpool 1 by around $50 million.
But i think its not a solid arguement. Its technically the same movie with a re-release and re-releases always count towards the total.

It could also be a lightning in a bottle thing and they try to replicate it and fail.
All the more reason a follow-up shouldn't simply be Joker:Redux, but give audiences what they teased at the very end; a showdown with Batman.

I don't care if it's Battinson, just give Joaquin a Batman that is his Joker's antithesis. The hype would be unreal.

Yeah, it's not like the same studio made the Oscar-winning Spider-Man animated movie or anything.

Oh snap. Yeah, I’m aware. Doesn’t change the fact that Venom sucked and that Morbius will probably suck too.

All of this!
