Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Quick question: I know they got De Niro for this to pay homage to King of Comedy but why didn’t they get an actual host since he’s only in it for a few scenes? Were Stewart, Corden, Conan, Letterman, Colbert, Oliver, and Noah unavailable? I know some of them aren’t actors but the job didn’t require that much acting, given how phoned in De Niro’s performance was.
I feel like that would take me out a bit, especially since this movie is set int he early 80s, and those hosts you listed are around in the 2000s+. It would just clash: a modern tv host in an early 80s tv host setting? I don't see the point. Plus, DeNiro was good in this role.

Subjectively, this was one of the least phoned in appearances De Niro's made in years.

Objectively, the movie is set in 1981. 1981 was 38 years ago. Jon Stewart was a host from 1999 to 2015. Conan O'Brien has been a host since 2010. David Letterman started in 1982. Stephen Colbert started hosting in 2005. John Oliver was a child in 1981. Trevor Noah was born in 1984. 1984 is three years after 1981.

Also none of them are/were talk show hosts in Gotham City. Gotham City is not a real place.

Uh...

My take on Deniro was that Murray wasn't supposed to be a Carson or Letterman stand in. I think his show was more supposed to be a throwback to the Joe Franklin Show spliced with a bit of Dick Cavett.

And as such... Deniro's performance and that portion dealing with the talk show itself falls into place much more for me.

I mean... There's a reason that Letterman was so revolutionary when he started in the 80's. The whole approach was shaken up and what a talk show host could do, as well as how much personality they could showcase really got upended. Deniro's character was, to me, a local phenomenon, which was something that was true of the time. Again, just wiki Joe Franklin. If Deniro seemed stiff, well, local broadcasting was stiff in the early 80's. I also think it totally tracks that a personality like Arthur Fleck's would fixate less on something like Carson and instead pour so much of himself into a local show with a host like Murray.

I felt there was some Jon Stewart thrown into there, especially when he was giving Joker some hard hitting questions.

That's where the Cavett comparisons comes in, in my mind anyway.

True but I know De Niro and Stewart are good friends (De Niro appeared on The Daily Show numerous times), so I can imagine some of Stewart’s persona bled into his performance.

My point was it would’ve been far more authentic to cast someone who actually knows the ins and outs of the business. I get you can’t cast certain characters with real people but what’s so troubling about a talk show host. I mean if you want acting, too, Colbert and Corden have done serious roles, too.

Casting Murray with a real host like Stephen Colbert or someone would have been totally distracting. And why does Murray have to be cast with an “authentic” late night host any more than Arthur should have been cast with an authentic clown?

All of this.

An R-Rated flick hitting a billion would be an incredible achievement. I hope this is the one to do it.

The legs it's maintained has been amazing.

Come on man, you are trying too hard now.

honestly I don't even know why that was given so much attention to begin with. With that said, I do realize I am being a bit hypocritical simply by posting this lol.

I couldn't be more thankful that Noah was unused/unavailable. Not really sure why anyone would want him for anything ever.

And maybe cause DeNiro may not be a host but he's an... Actor who has to... Pretend to be somebody else?

Yeah, I mean, the genre has had it’s darker takes before but movies based on superheroes/villains tend to be action films, and in some cases, comedies. Even Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, while great drama films in their own right, were still high octane action flicks. Joker kind of breaks new ground.

Just saw the film again! Loved it even more the second time! Noticed things I didn’t catch the first time.

Super impressive. A disturbing, violent, R-rated drama with no action doing this kind of business and having such strong legs is pretty wild.

Billie locked & loaded without China and with an R-rating, a small budget, and no big action set-pieces. Joaquin Phoenix turned out to be the best special effect they could have hoped for
