Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

A few things...

Honestly, I don't love Joker. I've had a few months to sit with it now, and I've come to that conclusion. I like it, I admire it, but can't bring myself to love it. I admire its production design, score, cinematography, Phoenix's performance, etc. It's a handsomely made film and a beautiful production top to bottom. I do not think it's all that great of a script, and it's also not really how I view the character at the end of the day.

However people being salty about it getting nominations is really silly. It's not hard to understand. The movie executed well on its vision. It also features the most talked about performance of the year from one of our best actors. The likely reason it got so many nominations is that the vast majority of voting members of the Academy are actors. And this is a film that is completely driven by the lead performance. A lot of people, of all different backgrounds just loved this movie, including people in the industry. And that's OK.

I'm just so sick of all the importance put on who or what gets nominated for an Oscar. The controversy that erupts year after year is so tiresome.

Nailed it. I don't love the movie as much as I wanted (like you said the script is pretty lame in parts, let's be honest) but as a fan of the genre I'm thrilled a comic book movie swept the Oscars. I don't understand the outrage or hand-wringing some people have, especially amongst superhero movie fans. Even if it doesn't nab a single Oscar (which is impossible) this is a huge win.

I don't think the script is lame. The story is told in the way it is supposed to be carried for the acting. And the dialogue is supposed to be that way, so it keeps the vibe of reality. I would say the script is better than every single one from the MCU, imo.

If the script was bad, the movie would be bad. It is not possible to make a good movie with a bad script. What some people don't seem to understand, is that the way Arthur talks is how he IS supposed to be. He is a mental ill person, at the end of the day. Phillips stated this in an interview, i think. Which is why he wanted Phoenix to be Arthur, because he knew he could make it work. It's a very good mix, imo. The film is made that way.

The fact that people are upset that this is getting award nominations despite the fact that it didn't cause any mass shootings is pretty pathetic.
I'm pretty sure it not causing any mass shootings is a big part of the reason why those people are mad about the film, they spent weeks (or in some particularly pathetic cases, months) shouting at the clouds about how it was definitely going to cause mass shootings, it didn't. None of them got the precious clicks and attention they wanted, and now they're just mad that the movie that made them all look like complete idiots has now been nominated for nearly a dozen oscars, and now they're desperately reaching to an amusing length to find any possible reason to try and complain about the movie's success.

I appreciate direction and the Quality of the movie Overall. But it didnt feel like a Comic book movie for me. It is more like a classic Drama, which no one would see if it doesnt called Joker.

I hope Phoenix and Score will land, but specially for Picture they Play the "Society was bad to him and the System dont help him"-card too often.

I admit the script isn't the most original as it was heavily inspired by Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. But Phoenix's performance, the score and cinematography elevates the script. It also helps that the main character is somewhat relatable to those that either have mental illness or knows someone who's mentally ill which is why the the movie resonate so much with the audience than the critics/media/bloggers.

Yeah some of the excuses for why it was nominated have been comical.

I think screenplay was the one nomination i disagreed with most. I love the film but found other films to be better written. (I feel the same about 1917. Fantastic film with great direction but i found other films to be better written)

Joker won’t win anything but Actor. It didn’t get a DGA nomination so there’s not that much love. Understand that the majority of Best Picture winners had the director winning the DGA award.

With everything that got thrown at Joker and still being flung now, I would love if the movie gods granted it the Best Picture win. But not at first.

Make this a La La Land/Moonlight scenario where let's say, 1917 wins and Warren Beatty again reads the wrong envelope. 'No no wait, guys, there's been a mistake. Joker, you guys won Best Picture.'
This may sound incredibly evil on my end but I'd love that exact same scenario but with Little Women instead of 1917.
I'd laugh so, so hard.

This film is such a weird thing to me because I honestly can't, with any good measure describe how I feel about it.

I think it's an incredibly effective film that's waaay deeper than people give it credit for.

But it also for some reason didn't quite have the emotional impact on me I thought it could've had, and I don't even know if to blame the film because I feel that had I come in with a bit of a different mindset or maybe at a bit of a different stage in my life it'd have resonated with me a lot more.

It has some contrivances in the script but again, I don't know if I can really fault the film because, since the PoV is exclusively on the shoulders of this mentally ill person not everything can make sense. It's so effective in the sense of putting you in Arthur's mind in a way that I haven't really seen any other film really really do in this very particular way.

But... I think it deserves all its nominations.
And I even think it deserves Best Picture.
And I don't even think it's a Taxi Driver/King of Comedy rip off.
It's also a worthwhile addition to the Batman mythology.

In taking time to properly digest and analyze this film, I think it now sits as one of my favorites and may claim that top spot in due time. It's just a really good movie that manages to entertain from start to finish while delivering a palpable message & crafting a new story around a character that, despite being mostly mysterious, has nearly a century of baggage and stories. I'm happy it succeeded in the way it has & its gotten all of the nominations. Truly deserving.

Joker is a great film with a fantastic leading performance. It's not, like, the best CBM of all time, which is still TDK by faaar in my opinion, but it's damn good I think. Do I think it'll win best picture? I don't tbh but I think for sure Phoenix will win best actor.

'Joker' Tops SOC Camera Operators Awards

Joker's Geoff Haley won the Society of Camera Operators award for camera operator of the year in film on Saturday at Loews Hollywood Hotel.

In collecting the award for his work on Todd Phillips' psychological thriller, which was lensed by Oscar-nominated director of photography Lawrence Sher, Haley topped a list of nominees that included Sam Ellison (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Craig Haagensen (Motherless Brooklyn), David Luckenbach (Ford v Ferrari) and Dale Myrand (Knives Out).

I get the feeling also that Phoenix has a bigger chance of the acting award than the film has for Best Picture. His performance was absolutely key.

Phoenix's performance, without question, elevated the movie I think. Without Phoenix, i don't think it would have gotten as much attention and accolades as it has. That's not saying it wouldn't have been a good film, becuse it's a damn good fillm as it is but it's clear Phoenix elevated the movie and any issues the film may or may not have are forgotten about because of how good Phoenix is. Either way, it's great to see the recognition the movie is getting and the fact that Joker was as good as it was makes me happy. It could have been really bad and a lot of people, including myself, were skeptical at first.
