If the rumors about the Scarecrow appearing in some form in this film is true, then I would be THAT MUCH MORE surprised IF the Joker isn't referenced back to in some way in this film, considering that if you add the Scarecrow, that the film (TDKR) would have also referenced characters as Two-Face and Ra's, in BIG ways I might add.

I mean granted, I'm not expecting a scene where they just have him referenced for the heck of fan service or whatnot, but considering the mayhem that the Joker brought alongside with the descent and eventual death of Harvey Dent, it'd feel natural if they referenced about how it took Gotham awhile to "recover" from the "Clown's" rampage or something.

Story wise; the only reason why his character wouldn't be around, would be:

1. He's been locked up somewhere very far away from Gotham

2. He was trialed and executed during the 8 year time span

The reason why I say that is because given Bane's desire to destroy Gotham, I would have thought that he'd go after the Joker and release him if he knew where he was to help aid to that cause...unless even Bane knew not to trust the Joker in any way.

In Goyer's unproduced Green Arrow script where he's framed for murder and locked up in a Supermax for supervillains. They depower all of the villains and let them out for exercise or something, can't remember. There's one cell they don't open at all, clearly marked "JOKER."

After sighting yet another Harvey Dent related scene for this movie, I am convinced now more than ever the Joker will be referenced. He is the reason why Batman and Gordon had to cover up for Dent in the first place. "The Joker cannot win".

I think a reference or two to him is in the bag. Maybe even more.

Joker wouldn't he held at Blackgate, but at Arkham. And I don't think telling the audience the Joker has escaped at the end would work in this context. I think it has to be a real sense of Gotham uniting to rebuild together with all of the drama behind them (the last we see of them anyway), especially if Batman is outed as Bruce and presumed to be dead. If the Joker got out, there wouldn't be the same thrill of going up against his nemesis. Though I do think he will be mentioned in some capacity.

TBCH, I really want an ending in the vein of "Batman: Whatever Happened to The Caped Crusader?" where itas very ambiguous and the viewer is unsure if Bruce is alive or dead and If he is alive, whether he's going to continue to be Batman.

A shot of the batsignal isn't out of the question somewhere near the end IMO - paying tribute in a similar fashion to the 911 light towers.

That Bat-Signal should be seen a symbol of hope at the end of this movie and not as a symbol of a murderer or a symbol to strike fear as it was in the last film

Well, if rumors are true and Bane is tied to the League of Shadows, it's gonna feel IMO like Joker (and by extension the freaks/corrupt) weren't the greater threat in the trilogy. Instead of Batman's final fight being with the people who wanted to revel in Gotham's chaos, it will be with the people who (in Bane's own words) wanted to reduce Gotham to ashes to prevent said chaos. I hope I'm wrong, though, and Bane is more like his comic counterpart who wanted to make Gotham his personal battleground.

Isn't that what Bane is doing to Gotham's people? Turning them into a mob of corruption who turn against the law and authority figures? Isn't that what Joker wanted by breaking Harvey Dent, winning the battle for Gotham's soul as he put it by tearing people down like that. Isn't that seemingly how Bane is doing that, by exposing the Dent cover up and turning everyone to his cause?

Bane is essentially doing what Joker was denied for 8 years by having Dent's corruption covered up. You've seen rampaging mobs of citizens fighting the Cops. You've seen them raiding rich people's mansions. Gotham has lost it's soul.

Nolan did specify the ramifications of the Dent cover up is being explored in this.

I agree about Bane. I hope he is his own mercenary who Talia is hiring for her cause, instead of some League of Shadows reject who's only getting his chance now 8 years later.
