The Last Defenders

Bah, had it more time, something would have happened. Colossus was a player. He doesn't let things like death stall his game for too long. When his love on Battleworld died, he was broken up, but not too shook up to try for someone else later on. And it wasn't like Zsaji just fell over and died or something, she literally gave her life to revive him.

And let's not forget he was cheating on Kitty with Zsaji...

Yes, he was. He noted it at the time ("Why am I not thinking of Kitty" or thoughts to that effect) and after he returned he struggled with admitting it to her. Later he chalked it up to a fear of commitment.

Least he didn't make out with Zsaji on Kitty's grave. :p Way to go, Scott.

The Defender Files: Nighthawk

Nice little review of Nighthawk's history with an aside about the 712 Nighthawk and the Squadron Supreme and commentary from Joe Casey. Casey really seems to be a big fan of Nighthawk. I hope that passion for the character translates into a great series.

It seems like Casey is pumped about this book. He's been clamoring for it to get upgraded to ongoing status.

Colored art!

Dread seems to think that Casey sucks sometimes, or something. Has he written garbage in the past? If so, I don't think I've read it.

I don't know, maybe. Every writer tends to have a stinker or two in there. I can't recall any myself. I think maybe his Uncanny X-Men might've sucked, but I didn't read it.

I did read it, actually. It was good, once you got past the art.

Getting past Churchill's art? I don't know, that's a pretty tall order. :(

I guess if I could get past Ramos, I could deal with that. But I think reading about the more active school of that era, which was a totally sensible and excellent idea, would just depress me now that it's got like 30 people left in it.

Thirty people who are constantly left behind to their own devices and eventually, killed.

Joe Casey co-created and wrote the Wildstorm series THE INTIMIATES (alongside Jim Lee, who took his name off the credits around 2/3rd's of the way through it's 12 issue run, if that means anything), and while it wasn't horrendous, it wasn't anything special. It's stashed away somewhere dark in my room and I probably couldn't GIVE those comics away.

Casey's UXM run wasn't terribly great at the time, but I have heard some people claim it has "aged better", especially since Casey came before the Austin run, and Casey had to compete against Morrison's NXM.

But, as Corp said, nearly every writer will have some duds on their rap sheet.

Read the Newsarama thing, it is good to do a bit of a spotlight on every member; I imagine Nighthawk & Blazing Skull need it more than She-Hulk and Colossus, who are both better known to the "mainstream" audience. Casey obviously knows a lot of history by himself, which is good. Always a plus. Granted, he's done those various Avengers mini's, so he kind of had to.

It is nice that he wants TLD to become an ongoing, but unless pre-orders for the first issue are dramatic, I seriously doubt that is happening. I mean, look at OMEGA FLIGHT, which imploded despite selling far better than some imagined. Marvel had a modest hit and blew it (and then Joe Q will bemoan how the industry is a "boom and bust", with strike-out's or grand slams with little between; hey, buddy, paranoia killed a solid base hit there!). THE ORDER's cancellation has retriggered my Marvel-pessimism. Or rather reinforced it.

The best TLD can hope for is to sell well enough that Marvel grants him another 6 issue mini. That at least is reasonable and possible. I will be aboard this series, though, and am anticipating it. So, keep that in mind when I sound the alarms of sales pessimism; I WILL BE BUYING IT! ;)

Can't wait for The Defenders. It was a great series before.

Glad you're aboard.

I liked those colored pages, although making the Brother's Grimm mostly "baby blue" kind of takes away their spook-facter. Granted, they only exist as Nighthawk/Gargoyle fodder, so I can forgive it.

Yeah, that blue is too pretty to be scary. Still, the coloring job as a whole is top notch. This is shaping up to be an uber-quality book.

Yeah. Nighthawk looks cool, that's the main thing.
