The Lone Ranger - Part 2

I would have totally be up for a Lone Ranger movie that was a real western with Depp in the title role and a Native American actor as Tonto. I haven't seen the Lone Ranger but the previews only told me that I was getting a loud, overly expensive Pirates in the West. If it wasn't that then the marketing is 100% to blame for the catastrophic box office performance.

No, that's pretty much exactly what it was. Pirates in the Wild West.

Well there you have it. I actually thought that Pirates in the West was a good idea until I saw the previews. It looked middle of the road to me and I saw nothing new. I practically saw the previews all Summer when I went to the movies and I still just found them completely uneventful and boring.

I'm just explaining why I decided to wait for DVD in case anyone who has seen it wanted to hear from someone who decided not to.

They screwed up in the marketing because they failed make The Lone Ranger himself appealing at all. In the commercials he was the butt of a few jokes, did a few cool things, but nothing eye grabbing that makes you go "I wanna see this!".

Kind of like the actual movie. Believe it or not, Depp's Tonto is actually the straight man in the pairing.

I didn't actually hate the movie. There is a good movie in there somewhere, and a fan edit could be quite enjoyable. It is just way too long for the story. Virtually nothing of importance occurs in the entire second act. A good hour could have easily been cut and the movie would have been better for it.

The same can be said bout the pirates sequels. they are over-stuffed with no kick to them.
i remember falling asleep in the theater for those. though i did enjoy the first pirates.
gore verbinski needs to go back to making more movies like "the weatherman"

Someday somebody will figure out how to make a really good Lone Ranger movie where the hero is the most interesting character and he'll be played by an excellent, charismatic actor. And it'll have a cohesive, exciting plot. Here's hoping...

Really? I liked the 2nd film, the kraken, Davy Jones, i liked how the film took its time and felt like a big adventure.

yea i remember only davy jones because of bill nighy's acting and good sfx for his design. maybe the only interesting thing about the movie for me.

Watched it as a kid and i loved it not only for that but also for the tone, set pieces, creative fights and for being an all around fun experience.

Disney overreached really hard and separated their shoulder.

its a tonto movie featuring the lone ranger that's one of the problems also depp is playing tonto as jack sparrow just like he played barnabas as jack sparrow

i swear to god two of my friends turn to me and ask me '' why is the middle of the movie so long. nothing is happening'' .

how many times did Tonto and Lone Ranger split? i think i counted 3 times. and the locations never change. Lone Ranger with Bunch walks through the desert. and they show day ,night, bridge, grass shots. i think it was 5 minutes of them walking to the train station. so Lone Ranger comes with Bunch and than they go on the train to the same location that Longer Ranger came. so in 15 minutes Lone ranger leaves Tonto and comes back to him. i think this happened 3 times.

the second act is just to slow.

i had to promise my friends in the middle of the movie that the final action scene will be the most expensive train action scene of all time. and that it will be good. ohhh how good that their geek friend knows everything and needs to promote the movie while watching the f..... movie.:cmad:

I personally love the second act. Zoomed by for me. Found it entertaining and pretty hilarious.

I still love Lone Ranger and I still think time will be kind to it.

Having said that, Armie's losing cred points, and fast, regardless of being right or wrong about this (I think he's both).

I don't put much value in critics. I don't think they are all bad or all good...it's just that I don't think anyone can fully understand if I will like or hate a movie without knowing me. I'm the biggest/best judge of what I like...which is why I uses trailers to judge what movies I go to.

I thought Lone Ranger was ok...not as bad as people were making it out to be.

Yeah, but the person playing the sidekick was the draw. If you have Johnny Depp and the guy who played the twins in The Social Network in a movie, you're going to promote Johnny Depp, not the other guy.

Unfortunately, Depp's character looked way too bizarre and unappealing not to mention stereotypical. Depp playing a goofy Native American with a crow on his head = not cool. Depp playing a drunken, cunning pirate = awesome.

I returned from seeing a campus screening of the film and have to say, I regret not catching this film in cinemas. This is one of the few times where I feel my critical brethren were mistaken in their near unanimous assessment of the film: it is a damn good film. While it is not great-contrary to Bruckheimer's comparison of it to the Wizard of Oz, due to his perception of the audience's reaction-I loved the hell out of the movie. While I agree that some of the fat could have been trimmed, it was excellently acted, designed, scored, and choreographed. I give the filmmaker's points for touching upon some of the less savory aspects of US history, but balancing it with blockbuster action.

In the final train showdown, I had a temporal displacement: for a few moments, I was again a child and watching the b&W Lone Ranger VHS cassettes my mother checked out of the library for me. I was grinning like an idiot the entire time.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think the critics were way too harsh on this, and I couldn't help but feel like they had an agenda with this movie. Either way, I still enjoyed it, saw it like 4 times in the theaters and I plan on getting it when it comes out on DVD.

Watched this last night with the wife. It didn't deserve quite what it got (or didn't get) from critics and the box office. The movie wasn't bad, but Gore's direction and the editing choices were a total dogpile. Watching scenes, even without having seen them before, I literally could say "start cut here" and "end cut...NOW" and trim out all the flat, unnecessary crap that drags the movie down.

One example is John's introduction. I'd totally have done away with the little girl and her doll. Unnecessary exchange. When Silver identifies John as the spirit walker, it was obvious again. As soon as he does it, I thought, "this needs to be cut right here I bet." I'd have edited out the gag with Tonto trying to get Silver to pick Dan over John. I'd have just cut straight to him walking over, looking at Silver, then looking at the sky and raising his arms in confusion. There were just too many of those moments.

I also would have trimmed down the first train sequence. As much as everything just DRAGS in the movie, it takes so much away from the beautifully crafted finale. Oh man, that is how you do a train-based action sequence! And that music! It really makes you understand what is was that was so captivating about the Lone Ranger to previous generations.

Overall, I came away thinking how much I just want to see more of Armie in the role, and even Depp as Tonto. It's such a shame that taking the reins off of Gore and giving him zero restrictions has ruined this franchise. The movie was still a lot of fun to watch.

6/10

I kind of feel like the characterisations of Lone Ranger and Tonto, as well as Depp's cliche' performance would have worked better if the film was a straight up comedy in the vein of Blazing Saddles. I mean making Tonto the focus and then going the direction they did with the character doesn't work. Not in an action movie that isn't all about laughs. I think Hammer did a good job with this version of The Lone Ranger but I just don't think this take was a good idea.

Damn you Tarantino, why didn't you post your list of favorite films of 2012 :cmad:
