I do have a problem with him coddling and then trying to pass himself off as a maverick still. Or if he'd just done it closer to the election--that's pretty standard. But he'd been doing it since 2 002.

But his ideology is still "maverick" in his party. All the coddling has been purely superficial. If his voting record had changed since 2002, thats one thing - but it hasn't. He has been ever moderate. Talk is cheap, as they say.

After Bush's people went after his kids in South Carolina, McCain's respect for Bush makes me question his own integrity.

I have never heard of anyone actually proving that anyone made the calls in South Carolina about him having bastard children. I know the story is out there - but no one ever had a recording of the calls.

I do believe that you can respect and disagree--I find that to be the case with you and hippie_hunter, for example. Joe Scarborough ain't bad for being wrong.

Tim Russert pressed Mike Huckabee on "Meet the Press" as to whether he'd like to be McCain's running mate. Obviously, Huckabee tried to brush off speculation, but Russert continued to press Huckabee until he said that he would be willing to run with McCain in the fall.

Arguably, McCain's VP choice will be one of the most important and interesting decisions made during this campaign. Many feel that McCain will only serve one term (if he makes it that long), and that his VP will basically be in-waiting to run in 2012.

All this brings up an interesting question, which I don't think has been discussed all too much on the boards: Who should be McCain's running mate?

I think that Mark Sanford would be the best choice: a young, Southern Governor who is popular with the conservative base. But I can see Tim Pawlenty getting simply because of his friendship with McCain and the fact that he stuck by him when his campaign was considered dead.

McCain should pick a young social conservative such as John Sununu or John Thune as his running mate if he really wants to balance the ticket, but I could see Huckabee as the "ideal" ticket balancer.

Sununu's father was born in Havana and one of the first prominent Cuban-American politicans, if I'm not mistaken, so he may help bring out the Latino vote. Especially in the always crucial Florida.

I don't know who he would pick then. Palin is out of the question because she wouldn't help him secure social conservatives, nor does she guarantee anything McCain doesn't already have. Her lack of national name recognition wouldn't help the ticket, and in the end the only state she'd guarantee McCain would be Alaska, which he's up by five points in as it is.

If he is to pick a woman, he'd be better off picking Olympia Snowe. Snowe would appeal to moderate Clinton supporters who may feel shafted by an Obama win, and her moderate credentials (as well as her lengthy Senate tenure) make her an appealing choice.

If he wants a minority... I'm not too sure who he could pick, other than JC Watts (who is totally obscure and wouldn't help McCain anywhere except the oh-so-liberal state of Oklahoma) or Condi Rice (who has expressed disinterest in running and wouldn't help him win over social conservatives).

So he may be better off sticking with a white man who can help him win certain demographics...

I think Romney should be his running mate do to the fact that many in my circle see Romney as the future of the Republican party. Plus it would help McCain in the fact that economically he isnt strong, somethinghe has admitted to.

That would actually be rather hilarious to see a McCain/Romney ticket and an Obama/Clinton ticket simply because they all can't stand each other t:

Jindal has only been in office for six months, and he was a Congressman for four years before that. He has no record.

Crist is pretty much the same thing, except he was Florida's attorney general for four years. Both Jindal and Crist lack policy credentials, and they won't help McCain win any major swing states (I'm assuming McCain will win Florida regardless of his running mate).

Romney is the best choice of the three, because he actually completed one term as governor and he was a pretty good businessman. However, he doesn't secure McCain a swing state, and the two have been on record slamming the other over his policies.

I don't think either of them will get the VP slot.
