McCain calls for 'economic surge'
Posted: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 2:41 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: 2008, McCain

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
JACKSON, Ohio -- For the second day in a row, McCain toured an industrial facility and then made a statement about the need for energy reform. Yesterday, the presumptive GOP nominee visited a nuclear facility in Michigan; today he toured the Merillat cabinet factory here as part of a two-day bus tour of the state.

McCain's message to the employees of Merillat after his tour regarded the need for a plan of action to fix the economy -- something he called "an economic surge."

"What we need today is an economic surge," McCain said. "Our surge has succeeded in Iraq militarily. Now we need an economic surge to keep jobs here at home and create new ones. We need to reduce the tax burden on businesses that choose to make their homes in the United States of America. We need to open new markets to U.S. products and we need to reduce the cost of health care and we need to end the out of control spending in Washington that's putting our debt on the backs of our children. Now's the time for action and when I'm president we are gonna get it done."

Asked afterwards what exactly the senator meant by the phrase "economic surge," campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said, "More money in family jobs, more money in family budgets, and growing jobs and small businesses."

The “surge” does not necessarily entail new economic policies from the McCain campaign, but seems to be more of a re-branding that allows McCain to link the economy with the surge in Iraq, which he often says has "succeeded."

Today McCain portrayed Obama's economic plan as an example of what not to do in a struggling economy.

"Companies are moving overseas," McCain said. "We're taxing them out of the country. Unfortunately, Sen. Obama's plans would raise taxes on businesses even more. He's promised tax increases on income, tax increases on investment, tax increases on small businesses. That's exactly the wrong strategy. Raising taxes in a bad economy is about the worst thing you can do, because it will kill even more jobs. What we need are policies that create jobs."

Great. More sloganeering. We have a war on drugs. War on terror. Why not a war on the economy? This part intrigued me: "Most Americans identify the surge as taking resources and putting them where they’re needed for success," says the McCain spokesman. But McCain, in order to take credit for the Anbar Awakening (which had nothing to do with the increase in troops in Baghdad), earlier tried to claim that when he said "surge" he always meant the counterinSURGEncy policy, not the reallocation of troops to Baghdad. So what economic insurgency is McCain going to try to supress with bribes and payoffs? And which part of the economy is he going to get to turn on and attack another part of the economy?

Lame.

Officer why am I being arrested for walking down the street?

Because you're showing your Obama

Couldn't have said it better myself.

McCain, Bush and the Republican Congress has had over 8 years to lead this country and look at where they've led us. They lied us into a war in Iraq. They wasted a Two Hundred Billion Dollar + Surplus and put us into a Four Hundred Billion Dollar + Deficit in just under 8 years, Coming to a grand total of over SIX HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS DOWN THE DRAIN. Our standing on the international stage has gone to hell in a handbasket. The economy sucks, Unless you're rich that is, Then it's all hunky dory. Our ports and borders are still not as secure as they should be, And old Bin Laden is still out there laughing at us.

Oh Yeah!, I want 4 more years of Republican rule. I'm voting McCain! :whatever:

Bro, that is sig-worthy!

Let's talk about John McCain's association with G. Gordon Liddy.

s-LIDDY-large.jpg

In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns--including $1,000 this year.

Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

Liddy helped plan the Watergate break-in, and spent four years in jail.

Liddy on Vietnam...

"I wanted to bomb the Red River dykes [sic]. It would have drowned half the country and starved the other half. There would have been no way the Viet Cong could have operated if we had the will-power to do that."

Liddy, advising Branch Davidians how to defend themselves from ATF agents during a radio show:

"If the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms insists upon a firefight, give them a firefight. Just remember, they're wearing flak jackets and you're better off shooting for the head."

Liddy, on the impact Adolf Hitler had on him as a child:

When he listened to Hitler on the radio, it "made me feel a strength inside I had never known before," he explains. "Hitler's sheer animal confidence and power of will [entranced me]. He sent an electric current through my body."

What a guy. Maybe John McCain should apologize for his association with Liddy.

Saying you are a fiscal Conservative, and acting like a fiscal Conservative are 2 different things.

And as far as 8 years of a Republican led Congress, untrue. BUT, I do blame much of the past 8 years on mostly Republican actions, and most of the past 2 years pm Pelosi and the Democrats. Neither party is on my "great" list these days.

McCain has some catching up to do.

The skeletons haven't even begun to fall out of McCain's closet, yet. What he needs is....a surge of some sort. :hehe:

OK, so Obama has (at least) one supporter who is a convicted felon. McCain has twice that. ;)

Also, I'm confused as to what Frank Davis did wrong.

Um, he was a Communist. So he's got that going for him.

Once again, you're relying on the media for your information. I have news for you: THERE WAS NO SURPLUS UNDER CLINTON.

Not that this is really news, because you knew it anyway, but you really like to throw distortions out there if you believe it'll work in favor of your chosen candidate.

When Clinton left office, the best that could be said at the time is that he 'balanced the BUDGET.' He did NOT pay down the national debt, let alone create a 'surplus' of any kind, and the only way he was able to balance the budget was by BORROWING from social security - which is also partly why social security is in such a dire state right now.

Fiscal

Year Year Ending National Debt Deficit
FY1993 09/30/1993 $4.411488 trillion
FY1994 09/30/1994 $4.692749 trillion $281.26 billion
FY1995 09/29/1995 $4.973982 trillion $281.23 billion
FY1996 09/30/1996 $5.224810 trillion $250.83 billion
FY1997 09/30/1997 $5.413146 trillion $188.34 billion
FY1998 09/30/1998 $5.526193 trillion $113.05 billion
FY1999 09/30/1999 $5.656270 trillion $130.08 billion
FY2000 09/29/2000 $5.674178 trillion $17.91 billion
FY2001 09/28/2001 $5.807463 trillion $133.29 billion

When Bush took over, the national DEFICIT was 17.91 billion, but the national DEBT has CLIMBED by 1.4 TRILLION.

If you don't understand the difference between the national DEBT and the national DEFICIT, you shouldn't be commenting on this topic. However, if you did understand the difference, then you wouldn't be sitting here and attributing actions to Clinton which NEVER HAPPENED.

Either way, you're uninformed and uneducated on this topic.

If you would like some education on this topic AND you're able to break free from partisan politics long enough to do some research, I invite you to check out the following link:

If that's not good enough and you simply refuse to believe what I'm saying, you can also take a look at the US Treasury's website for hard data (http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/BPDLogin?application=np). Careful, though, because it will contradict the non-sense you've been fed up to this point, and which you have chosen to believe ahead of actually, you know, looking it up for yourself.

Not that I blame Clinton, mind you. After all, I did vote for the man both times and he did accomplish some good things for our country despite his personal shortcomings...

Ouch.

You know you're right, It's not 8 years. From 1998 to today the Republicans have been in charge in one way or another either in Congress, The White House or both so it's really been 10 years.

Either way the fact still remains. The Republicans have been leading this country in either the White House or Congress for the past 8 to 10 years and look at where that leadership has gotten us. See above post

As for the past 2 years in congress, I agree that Pelosi and the Dems have been kinda useless but they are not the only reason congress hasn't gotten anything done. The Republicans have been blocking the bulk of the Dems initiatives by filibustering everything the Dems propose because they know the Dems don't have a supermajority.

Untill the Dems get a supermajority they can't do a thing in congress unless the Republicans votes with them and we all know that ain't gona happen.

yearly Deficit
$281.26 billion
$281.23 billion
$250.83 billion
$188.34 billion

$130.08 billion

Hey laz...

whens the last time a president cut the ACTUAL yearly deficit so much that it got down to 17 billion... screw your definition of surplus, there was some serious undeniable progress on the debt under clinton.

look at the trend form when he got in office till 2000
