The Naked Fun in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

Given how critically acclaimed Andor is, and how successful Rogue One is... why is Tony Gilroy not spearheading the next big Star Wars trilogy? Why are they giving that to Simon Kinberg?
Gilroy probably doesn’t want to, tbh. He admitted from the start he wasn’t a Star Wars fan. I think that’s a big part of why the show’s so damned good.

Gilroy’s done a good job quality wise so far with his work on Rogue and Andor but the $600+ million price tag for both seasons and not the best viewership figures might give the higher ups and bean counters some pause to do it again.

To be honest, I don't really understand Lucas Film's strategy with their Star Wars releases. What they make into a show and what they make into a movie seems random, and they spend as much on their shows as they do their movies. I think this is part of why Star Wars doesn't feel as big and as special as it used to.

Surprised you guys aren't atleast excited about the Rey spinoff.

Thought yall wanted her to be more fleshed out and have more to do?
I just don't care about the IP right now, lol! Outside of a KOTOR3 video game or a KOTOR project, I just don't care right now

Books and comics are enough for me for Star Wars. If we get a new movie, we get a new movie, but I am not desperately in need of one.

Eclipse needs to die in a fire though.

The Rise of Skywalker kind of killed my interest for anything sequel era and beyond but I'll still see it and I hope it's good. Daisy Ridley could use a win.

Tempted to see that Martin Campbell action movie she's in while it's playing in theaters right now, but man... it just does not look good.

I have no recollection of who Sgt Rock is and I’ve been following superheroes since the 80s.
This is the main issue I have with Gunn 's approach so far, I don't mind giving the spotlight to less popular characters, but some of these projects seem like they are a bit too much of a deep cut. A nice balance would be someone like a Zatanna who while not overly mainstream also is someone who i think would generate more excitement from DC fans.

I believe THE POINT of projects like Sgt. Rock is that no one knows who they are. The recognizability is not the selling point. Making a unique, quality movie from one of our most exciting filmmakers is. The lack of recognizability removes expectations and allows the filmmaker more freedom to make something truly special. This and Clayface are lower-budgeted for a reason. They ain't blockbusters. They're being made to be good movies with good characters, plain and simple. They're not taking away a slot from a marquee character. We're still getting those. They're simply expanding the scope of what a "DC movie" can be.

If you think about it; had the internet been it is today in 1997, people would be saying the same thing about New Line making Blade. “Of all the Marvel characters they’re making Blade? Thats way too much of a deep cut; who’s asking for this?” Turns out tons of people were asking for Wesley Snipes to slay Vampires and it being based on a Marvel character was completely irrelevant.

Yes, but they don't have an unlimited amount of films they can make, so in essence any project you move forward with is potentially blocking another one. And as a DC fan I just think there are more interesting characters out there who also are not mainstream.

Regarding the often changing Star Wars slate it seems extra meaningless when there's about to be a new head of Lucasfilm.

Other than that I've learned that results can vary a lot from my hype. I went into Rogue One thinking that it was an unnecessary story to tell and it affected my first viewing but now I've grown to love it and it's the one non-OT film that belongs with them. On the other hand I was very hyped for Johnson doing something new with TLJ and ended up with a downright bad film and a worse SW film.

I'm getting my Andor season 2 and that's really all I'm asking for at the moment.

It’s a very hard job. No universe apart from the MCU from the end of Phase 1 to the end of Phase 3 has had consistency and regular strong individual projects (more Phase 3) that also contributed well to the wider universe.

And the guy who oversaw that with all the accumulated experience and success then went to oversee a much weaker era. A lot of luck and circumstance has to go your way on top of having the right tools. Good luck to whoever takes over on Star Wars.
