The Natalie Portman/Jane Foster Thread

I will be very upset if she dies (I bet this will not happen) I just want her go away with dignity and that to be her own decision. Not forced on her by some third side. She is a smart woman, she must understand that it`s not her place to be in immortal realm no matter what is her heart desire is. Love is not everything that is needed for relationship to work.

I had no idea there was a shipping war in Thor. Don't read the comics, so I can't say much on Jane vs Sif. However, the Chris/Natalie chemistry was the only thing I liked about the first Thor movie. Losing Portman would be a bad choice. JMO.

I like how so many are dumping on Jane for being a shallow love interest. I hate saying this, but other than Pepper and Whedon's take on BW (notice the emphasis on Whedon), that goes for every woman in the MCU, sadly.

I am just happy that she is back because Thor ended that on such a cliffhanger and one of the best parts about the first film was the chemistry that Hemsworth had with Portman, Skarsgard, et al. The Earth scenes did indeed feel like they were shot and budgeted on the cheap and made to pad the movie out, but Branagh cast really good actors who made it a very enjoyable diversion for most of the second act, even if Kat Dennings tried to undermine it with annoying plucky sidekick syndrome.

But it makes sense from a business standpoint to leave Jane out now. Marvel needed Portman to sell an unknown property like Thor in 2011. Now, he is THOR OF THE AVENGERS and stunt casting is not needed. Granted, I do not know if it will work from a narrative standpoint. Whether she lives or dies, she must leave while simultaneously re-cementing Thor's commitment to Earth. However, she likely will leave because Portman won an Oscar since she principle photography on Thor wrapped and honestly is bigger than this small role.

However, she and Hemsworth have great chemistry, something that Alexander has yet to prove. I would not be in a hurry to dump such a talent. Then again, given how Marvel writes their female characters, it probably will not matter in the grand scheme of things.

I think we will see a much stronger jane in this movie, We have a much better director who knows the proper balance in female roles, Natalie Portman was very concerned when a new director and writer was introduced, as well she should be.
But after seing the new direction they were going in TTDW she realised she was going to be given a much better role this time around with this director and writers.
I look for Jane to be in upcoming sequels as well, she plays a pivotal role in conecting Thor to earth and as a strong yet vulnerable companion that really helps him.
Marvel and Disney will rewrite the book on how it treats women in the Thor series and they will keep Jane as a important part of the upcoming movies...
Academy award winner or not she gains on all levels staying with the Thor series, she will have great actors, directors, writers and will star in a continuing block buster film bananza that will give her a large amount of new fans as well as a lot of money......

Okay, Thor fans are going to hate me for saying this, but I had his idea last night.

DISCLAIMER: My knowledge of Thor comes solely from the MCU films and a few off-hand issues of The Avengers and an episode or two of that Avengers cartoon I have caught over the years.

Portman wants a better part and is honestly better than the role of Jane. Fans want Thor to be with Sif. How about instead of writing Jane out simply as "We come from different worlds" just as the trailer hints, something bad BESIDES DEATH happens to her?

I doubt Marvel would do this at it takes too much creative effort to invest in a character, but what if instead of that guy killing her, he uses magic to turn her into a villain. And not in a "oh, we must find this dues ex machina to turn her back." I mean a clearly irreversible thing that turns her evil. Hell, why not she becomes Echantress? Maybe Loki does it just to spite Thor?

That way, she is a reminder of Thor's greatest failing. She can then appear randomly in future films as a cause of pain and shame for Thor. Basically kind of like Harvey Dent is for Bruce Wayne.

A random thought, but it would be more interesting than just sending her back to Earth with a hug or killing her off. Just a thought.

Your mature and articulate post is right. ;) They should just play it safe and have it go like everyone predicts. No surprises or ambition is desired.

I'll say it much nicer...

to quote a great friend, Patrick Star from spongebob..."your perspective is a lot to be desired"

I just think this doesn't work. It's WAY too out of character. Turning Jane into Enchantress not only ruins janes character, but it ruins a classic villain in Thor's rogue gallery. It wouldn't work

The last post was in jest. Hence the ;).

Yeah, in retrospect the Enchantress suggestion is stupid (though I only know her form one episode of the cartoon). I just think after TDK, killing her is expected and boring. Having them break is up is (always) expected and boring. There has to be a third way.

Jane shouldn't die. I think that if she is the "human" element of the movie, then make them split for a very "human" reason.

Girls... ever had it where you've really fancied a guy on a really superficial level because he's really hot but then you go out with him and find that despite the hotness and physical attraction, you just don't have that much in common? So you just end up being mates instead?

I know I have.

This needs to happen with Jane and Thor IMO.

Yep, totally agree. This will give us some new type of SH love interest-the one who walk away. And give fans of this pairing some hope for re-uniting in future.
Killing her will be just fridgeing another female character for the sake of male character development thought suffering. And this is horribly unfair rout.

You are all negative nellies in here. Like you've resigned yourselves to Marvel's usual trampling of the character. Lets just bask in the love for once.

In the trailer it almost looks as if she dies. O_O I kind of like her.. :( <3

Whats all this so negative mood over here? lol Nobody will die when Thor is around, did you forget that? :woot:

Thor and Jane should get married. I'd really like to see this on the big screen:

Polishing his hammer. Maybe he was talking about... something else... errm... Nevermind :cwink:
Shorter hair??!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! His helmet would simply fall off then! ^_^

No, I just want to see Thor and Jane get married and happy...

Being married to Thor or Jane is not the worst thing.

Being married to Reed Richards is the worst thing.

Back to Thor...

I can't believe this "gentleman" is called actually Mr. Fantastic. lol. This is why I love Thor, he is the last perfect gentleman in this universe. Doing handkisses and making pancakes for his friends ^_^

superman-has-a-spanking-robot.jpg

Another reason why Superman sucks has just been added to the list :woot:

I want it to be Queen Sif :(

Me too ;) Why should Thor not have 2 ladies during 3 movies? With this big hammer he can get any girl :woot:

Maybe Jane and him will break up (not saying she'll DIE, wiping her memory would do the job too lol) and he will be with Sif then.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jane die in The Dark World. If they're going to follow the comics, then the two of them will at some point have to call it quits and Thor will have to remember that Sif's always been his true love. Plus, killing Jane off would be dramatic and free Portman to walk away from future sequels (since, as I recall, she only did the first movie because she wanted to work with Branagh). Win/win.

Thor gets stuck with Sif which has always flopped hence why they are on and off every other year. Also, 'Thor's true love', no. Thor's emotional punching bag and perpetual runner up. Yes.

Lose the biggest actress on your books and your lead for an actress with no successful roles where she has been a lead and who doesn't have any name recognition.

Lose/Lose.

Being on/off is totally o.k. in my eyes for couple that is immortal. Fidelity is not a thing for the beings that have such a long life span. It does not mean they are not loved each other or something. At least Sif have time needed for Thor to find his interest for her again and visa/versa. Jane does not have this time – she just a mortal-dust on the winds of time. And if she is made immortal some time down the road she will lose her humanity and become just as Sif in a sense of on/off with Thor.
Lets be real here this romance, no matter how beautiful and romantic (for some-not to me-I hate human/non human love trope with passion) is doomed.

What will happen to Thor when he'd loose his most important connection to Midgard?

I think they might end the Thor / Jane relationship. The reason Sif is in love with him now unlike the first movie... could be a) They want to replace Jane with Sif or Jane will die. b) They simply want to level up the love relationship with a triangle.

Depending on how they'd do a Thor / Sif relationship, I'd be ok. I'd be 100% ok with a love triangle.... Also looking forward to Enchantress ruining Thor's relationship any time soon :D

Haha, okay. I'm sure Portman's a huge draw for people who would never have watched Thor's movies otherwise. Regardless, I still would be cool with Jane dying. Although I could just as easily see them going the comic route and placing Jane in mortal danger, only to have Sif demonstrate her love for Thor by sacrificing herself to save Jane. Either one would be a good ending to the love triangle they seem to be hinting at in the trailer and would introduce a lot of drama into Thor's story.

Here is the thing I never understand. If he protects earth not because he like humanity and find them fascinating as a whole but because he infatuated with one female of the species - than it is very shallow and do not bode well for Midgard in long perspective. If she dies/broke up with him/become immortal and leave earth for good-than he will lose interest in humanity as "his main connection" will not connect him for with the planet any longer?

It is realistic, yes, (some man are only capable for loving children as long as they love their mother and as soon as love for her is gone so is the love for the children), but not very heroic or inspiring. She was an element (maybe the biggest I will give you that-but not the key one) to establish his interest in humanity-but just an element, not the main reason.

Hopefully they show that Jane was just his "gateway drug" into humanity, if you will. In the comics, the things that keep him on Earth are 1) his mother is Gaea, the goddess of Earth, 2) humanity's spirit and bravery in the face of their tiny lifespans impresses him, and 3) he feels a kinship with Earth because his life as Don Blake is still a big part of him. The movies already eliminate #3 right off the bat, and I doubt they'll ever get into enough backstory to establish #1. So that leaves #2, which would be easily established: just drop a line in about how he's met mortals of surprising valor and courage in the Avengers and wishes to aid them in their cause. That would make sense with his warrior heritage, too, since the Asgardians are essentially protectors by nature (especially in the movies).

hey everyone I did post this in another thread ... it should have been here. So I put it here for those who didnt see it. This is what I hope for in thor 2 regarding jane

Jane will be interesting cant wait to see her in asgard and how she will interact with the asgardians, I hope she will hold her own with her wit and scientific mind. Maybe show the value of mind over brute strength, that the asgardians favor so much. I have a feeling the asgardings are going to be very consending towards her and humans in general despite the events of the avengers

I always felt that Jane was given a bad deal in the comics when she went to asgard, a test she had no hope of passing. I am rooting for her over Sif, yes Sif is a strong character no deying that, but I know from some of the comics that she can be condesnding so it will be interesting to see if she has some of that attitude. But I do like jamies version of the character, she is good for that role

Besides I always go for the underdogs, and I know jane is one I hope she as I said can hold her own. Oh and her interaction with Loki should be good too they finally meet according to the trailer they travel together really cant wait to see that.

My two cents as always just an opinion

Natalie Portman, you are quite the beauty. *slaps self in face. Must remember the Minionette*

I enjoyed Portman's Foster in the first movie and is looking forward to seeing her in Asgard!
