The Negative Outlook thread

the budget is rumored to be around $100 mil....that's not exactly that hard to make back. that being said, Hellboy 2 made $156 mil world wide so it would be a shame and an embarrassment if this movie doesn't make it's budget back.

That's because Hellboy 2 is a good movie that was faithful to the look of its characters in translating them from the comic. Plus the storyline was well crafted as well.

Yeah, pretty much all movies make their budget back worldwide :o I meant domestic. Should've clarified I guess.

Yeah, my feeling about this movie isn't good. I think it's going to be a struggle to reach $100 mil domestically.

It's my gut feeling that tells me that the movie will be a disaster. and you can never 'prove' gut feelings, sadly, though it has a great track record on bad movies (X-Files 2, Max Payne...wait a minute..FOX MOVIES??)

This movie will fail unless Nimbus is in it...lol

What I’m looking for in this movie “Adaptation” since I am a fan of the Dragonball franchise is not if Goku is going to high school, if piccolo is green, or master roshi as a straight pervert but a movie that I can enjoy watching a decent storyline and acting, cool CGI animation and have fun with the other fans of the franchise and the general audience.

True, but it's not hard to remain faithful to the source you're adapting from. Spider-Man, X-Men, and Batman are a few examples that prove that you can make a great adaptation. When I look at Dragonball, I see little resemblance to the anime. I see way too many changes, which are unacceptable. It's not too much to ask really.

yeah but even X-Men, Batman and Spiderman have thier flaws and things they changed for the movies

Yeah, but the changes in those were very minor. In here, it's overwhelming. Seriously.

It is like they took the anime Full Metal Alchemist. Set it in THIS world, changed Edward to an American studying Alchemy at an Alchemy school and made Al a real boy who wears armor for fun.

Also no alchemy just a card game called alchemy that all the kids play..

The biggest problem this movie has is I think most people think the idea is a joke.

"A live action Dragonball Z movie? Is ****in Freiza gonna be in it? That ****s gonna suck." This will be the typical reaction from Joe Movie-goer.

To you it may seem that way. It would also seem that way to those who have passive knowledge about Spider-man. But as an avid fan they literally changed EVERYTHING with Spider-man. I know this because I've read all the comics.

I also seen all of Dragonball so I can make a fair comparison. So far it seems about even with the number of changes. Seriously...

That is why it is stupid to say this isn't Dragonball.

Also what they did to Spider-man with the organic web shooters instead of him making them would be equivalent to having Goku invent some gloves that shoot the ki blasts instead of him actually shooting them.

Thank God they didn't go that far.

Who knows maybe they did...
Roshi - "these bands on your wrists will enhance the chi in the world and put it into a concentrated force"
Goku - "so your saying I can shoot fire balls"
Roshi - "smirks, just like a super hero"

I can see it now...

I just watched the trailer on Saiyan Island's website....to me, it just looks like a big budget kung fu flick with explosions.

I didn't see much or any flying, super speed, yelling and powering up(gotta have yelling and powering up:oldrazz: )....and I don't even care about the race issue. The kiddies might like it because it's flashy but for hardcore anime fans, nah it won't fly IMO.

..and one guy mentioned piccolo looking like Jim Carry's Mask, haha...so true.

they went further.....changing Goku's upbringing is far worse than changing Spider-Man's webshooters. as someone mentioned ealier, it's like changing Peter from a nerd to a jock. i consider changing Spider-Man's webshooters the same as changing Joker's skin from permawhite to just makeup, a small change that aids in the practical transition to film. Goku going to high school, however, is neither a small change nor aids the translation of this franchise to film. i also consider leaving out Krillin more of a crime than replacing Gwen Stacy with Mary Jane.

Peter might not be able to show his technical prowess by building webshooters, but at least he's still the intelligent every man that he is in the comics. Goku, however, is no longer the naive nature boy that he was in the manga.

I'd agree except i don't think Joe Movie-goer knows who the **** Frieza is :p

i think it will have a decent opening weekend.

Actually they ruined Peter's character in the movie. They made him a soft spoken anti social dork.... He was NOT like that at all in the comics during College.

This was a huge let down. Everyone claimed he was Peter but he wasn't. In the comics Peter was a ladies man in college. He seriously got all the girls, was not picked on at all, and was quite outgoing and outspoken.

They totally ruined his character.

I dont think he was totally ruined, the direction Raimi was taking showed the difference between Spider-man and Peter Parker, as Peter Parker he is allowed to be soft spoken and try to deal with his personal problems, whereas once he dons the mask, he has 100% confidence in himself. It was an ongoing battle of dealing with dual lives.

they definitely exaggerated his nerdiness, but i don't think it ruined Peter's character. he was somewhat of a dweeb in high school. not as much as he was in the movies but that element was still there.

well for one, he wasn't in college in the first movie. second, i actually don't think they should've kept making him a nerd in the 2nd and 3rd films. regardless, neither his webshooters being organic nor him being a nerd in college change the fundamentals of Peter Parker nearly the same way Goku going to school does.

again, i don't think they should've made him a nerd in the sequels. maybe a tad, but not like he turned out to be. there are some issues i have when it comes to the portrayal of Peter in the movies, but his story is more intact than Goku's is. in this movie, they're basically trying to make Goku more like Peter Parker.

They totally ruined his character.
i think you're exaggerating. he still makes quips every once in a while, he still is an intelligent young man who struggles with his dual identities, and he still is a New Yorker. the changes made to Peter from comic to film seem small compared to the one big change made to Goku from manga to film.

they didnt totally change Peter's upbringing, Goku has events happen that never really happen thus making him different

pretty much. i mean, Goku was exposed to modern technology when he was younger, but it wasn't on a daily basis like it is in the movie. we won't be seeing Goku mistake any vehicles for creatures and we probably won't see him enjoying the outdoors. judging from the footage we've seen so far it doesn't even look like he wears a gi until he trains with Roshi.

What really messes up his character is by placing him in high school, are they overlooking all of his childhood adventures. I mean he DID take down the Red Ribbon army when he was a child, he also learned and mastered the Kamehameha when he was kid.

yeah...i could forgive a lot of the mistakes that were made if they had just kept Goku a wild child. i still wouldn't have bought Chatwin as Goku, but at least all the fundamentals of Goku's story would've been intact.
