Anyone think Suicide Squads ending was more Ghostsbusters then Ghostsbusters?

The reveal with June Moone at he end was definitely a Ghostbusters reference.

Because it's edgy and hip, just like Exorcist references and "say hello to my little friend".

The new film needed a decent budget for it to succeed but perhaps with something $40-$50 million cheaper they would've made the best out of the limited budget they had and they could break even or turn a profit.

Adjusting for inflation...

Ghostbusters 1984 - $70 million budget / $589.6 million domestic gross
Ghostbusters II - $80 million budget / $245.3 million domestic gross
Ghostbusters 2016 - $144 million budget / $116+ million domestic gross

Men in Black - $170 million budget / $472.9 million domestic gross
Men in Black II - $208 million budget / $283.8 million domestic gross
MIB 3 - $240-250 million budget / $191.4 million domestic gross

Evolution - $140 million budget / $58 million domestic gross

Pixels - $94 million budget / $82.5 million domestic gross

R.I.P.D. - $144 million budget / $34 million domestic gross

Fingers crossed someone at the press junket asked Ayer if he was a Ghostbusters fan and a video comes out this week.

Multiple Ghostbuster references at the end and felt more like a ripoff instead of a love letter. Captain Boomerang should've commented how that seemed similar to Ghostbusters.

It's unfortunate that some execs will see that the takeaway is female led movies don't work when it should be poorly written, unfunny cash-ins on 80s nostalgia don't work.

I think part of the problem is that this movie became this cultural statement and part of a moral debate about sexism.

Pretty much.
Very early on it was, Misogynists vs feminists vs social justice warriors vs Ghostbusters Fans.

It wasnt longer about the movie itself, but for what it stands or not.
The movie was just released a couple of days ago here in germany, so i will give it a try.
I decided that i will look at the movie myself and make my own opinion.

Yup.

That's what i said too. It got too politicized

Marketing this film with the PC and anti PC agenda in mind was sad. Barely represented anyone and they knew it, but what else was there to talk about? There was nothing so the very vocal minority got attention. It was all they had.

That political nonsense along with some of the worst marketing will now bring them in around a 70m loss.

Well, that's how it goes. I hope the new animated series fares better.

A sequel would make even less than this, so...

There's no point for a sequel. Barely anyone was liking this film prior to release and just as few are liking or talking about it now.

No more controversy, no more interest. The film didn't deliver.

Vindication!

What do you have to say now Paul Feig?

Oh well.

In thirty years, the new head of Sony will be some kid who watched this one and wanted a sequel so.....

And to that child, we'll say: "It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your [movie] had it comin'. When you grow up, if you still feel raw about it, I'll be waiting."

Glad that this is not getting a sequel. Seemed this would happen every since the first trailer was released. Sony also should have expected this when they attempted to ruin the franchise.

Oh well, no one needed this film anyway.

I think Feig would've been better off making his own Ghostbusters style movie with that cast. Just don't call it Ghostbusters.

Always felt this franchise struggled beyond the original film anyway. Still, I didn't hate the film and would have been happy to see the cast with a better story/direction.

Passing on the Extreme Ghostbusters setup is what I found most baffling. You get to double the nostalgia bux there - the oldsters that enjoyed the original, and young adults like me that were more familiar with the Extreme GB cartoon. Plus with that aesthetic you can market the **** out of it with the Hot Topic crowd and pull in even more fans.

Honestly, I loved what I read of Max Landis's GB3 treatment with Gozer and Tiamat. Take that, make the EXGBs the mains, with the old team there to help guide them when they stumble and fall - and you've got a winner that appeals to a wide variety of audiences.
