The New Ghostbusters - Part 6

The trailer is going to be interesting, no matter which way it goes.

Honestly, I don't get it. Why does the remake upset so many people? If you don't want to see it...don't. If you want to give it a chance, go see it. If you would rather pop in your blu-ray of the original and watch it, go for it.

Ghostbusters remains one of my favorite movies of all time. The only thing that would piss me off, is if someone destroyed every copy of the original in the world and told me I had to only watch the remake from now on. The most I can really say publicly because of legally binding agreements I signed, is that I really enjoyed it. It wasn't as good as the original, but it was better than Ghostbusters 2.

Changing canon is the majority of fans worst nightmare. This has always caused concern with pretty much every fan related property. Even Feig said he understands that side recently.

“Look, there’s plenty of fans of Ghostbusters that have an issue with it being a reboot, that I completely get… I find that valid.”

When the film is released and if it's good, then there won't be anything to worry about. But I don't get your confusion on why fans are scared of major change. Always been there. Fans wanted the series continued with a passing of the torch with at least a few of the same characters returning. Heck, I told my parents that Bill Murray will not be playing Peter Venkman and they lost all interest and thought that it was stupid just based on that. They don't keep up with all the fan stuff, but that's what they loved and remembered. Take away their favorite thing and their first impression without seeing anything won't be strong. Wasn't until I showed them how good Spy was that they started to change their mind, but still remained skeptical.

This new series has to prove itself before all the naysayers accept it as worthy. Simple as that. The trailer will be the first step.

I was at the first test screening of the film a couple of weeks ago. The only connections I saw, were fan service nods and references. Got to meet Ivan Reitman and sat right by him. He laughed quite a bit and genuinely seemed to enjoy the movie, as did I.

It is frustrating seeing all the speculation and knowing what spoiler hounds are getting right and what they are getting really wrong, and not being able to say anything.

I enjoyed Bridesmaids and Tammy, the others you mentioned...not so much. I will say this, McCarthy is very different than I've seen her before, much more reserved and toned down. Wiig is hit or miss and her weaker points in the film are because she is playing up the awkward, geeky, boy crazy angle towards Hemsworth. The real stars are McKinnon and Jones as far as I'm concerned. It's hard to judge tone, since most of the f/x shots were not complete. Of the finished ghost effects, they were quite scary and well done.

I have to say, one of the greatest nights of my life was being in the test screening audience and having Ivan Reitman choose the seat directly behind me in the theater. I had run into him in the men's room shortly before that and about had a heart attack. That may have unfairly altered my perception of the movie, but I like to think I'm fair when judging movies.

Good to hear the movie turned out well and thanks for the input, bluejake01. :)

I get that fans may not like a new take on their beloved property, but the amount of ire and anger that people manage to work up always surprises me. Either see it or don't. Like it or don't. At the end of the day, everything you love about Ghostbusters still exists. The original cannon still exists. The comics still exist. The video game still exists. This remake isn't going to replace the originals...its just going to also exist.

Sorry but that's nonsense at this point. We have barely anything to go off with how the film will look or play. How about if it looks good and reviews are good see it. That sounds reasonable no? Giving your money to a franchise just cause you liked the original sends off a bad message to the studio if the film ends up being crap. Saying give the film a chance to prove it's worthy before you pay is far more applicable. I want the trailer to change everyones view. The whole love it or hate it thing has been the most frustrating aspect of these conversations. There's no clear reason to think either.

The argument that the old movies are there and not being erased is ********. I just want a good Ghostbusters film, and have been waiting for another one for quite sometime. As a Ghostbusters fan I would definitely prefer something connected with the characters I've grown up with for the past decades. They are the reason I love it. These new characters taking over are not proven yet.

Until audiences see proof that these departures are worthy I don't expect them to change their judgment. I'm not gonna praise a film for just having Ghostbusters in the title without even having seen a trailer. That's stupid. It needs to show me why these changes were for the better.

This was a mostly reasonable and measured response. You should know as well as I do, that reasonable isn't the response this movie has been getting. There are those that accuse the remake of actually raping their childhood. Those that spew vile and hateful misogyny all over the place, like a bunch or frat boys vomiting up the poor life choices of the night before.

It's a movie. You will either like it or not. If you don't like it when it comes out, discuss why you don't like it. In the mean time, the people that are able to produce actual rage over this or any other film, have pretty callow priorities.

I would have preferred a passing of the torch in continuity, but that ship ultimately sailed...or could potentially still exist as a multiverse option. The concept of dimensional portals and other planes of existence may or may not have come up...and may or may not have been a central plot point.

I agree the hate has been far too strong and ridiculous regarding gender. I personally don't even take any complaints about the gender into consideration cause I know the film's quality will be what matters most.

My biggest frustration has been the lack on discussing the film and the attitude that fans are either supposed love everything just because it's being put out, or hate it all. We all do not have that basic mindset as viewers. As far as the film itself we just haven't seen anything.

I'm glad you liked it, and I'm very much looking forward to the trailer within the next day. I hope Sony puts out some solid marketing material that can move the film to more in depth conversations.

I completely disagree, and I don't think any of the hardcore fans (like myself) really care about that. We are perfectly fine with a remake/reboot with a new cast. The reason being, Bill Murray was being a pain in the ass and didn't want to do it, Harold Ramis passed away, and Rick Moranis doesn't act anymore. You can't make a real GB3 with half the cast and try to worm your away through the existing canon with awkward cameos.

The issue is that the McCarthy / Wiig / Paul Feig style of humor isn't funny to a lot of us. It's not a gender issue, it's an issue of whether the movie will be funny. To swap genders for a second, if this movie was cast with Kevin James and Adam Sandler, we would be just as terrified.

Now, you get people like Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikas, Ellie Kemper, and Mindy Kaling, you can believe me 100% when I say that there would be a LOT less hate coming from social media. It's just true.

I completely disagree as well haha. You think Ghostbuster fans are cool with cutting out characters like Peter Venkman and Ray Stantz? What if TMNT cut out Mikey and Donatello? That's a big deal man, and takes guts to actually rip the establishing and marketable team out of the picture completely. The complaints on social media are all people asking for "The Real Ghostbusters". They want those characters. They are the ones from the comics, video games, movies, cartoons etc fans are still buying and hoping to see again on the big screen. And rightfully so, they have been the franchise for over 30 years. Without them there is nothing right now. They are the franchise and why people are interested.

I still see that as the main problem everywhere. Feig made by far the best mainstream comedy of last year so I still don't see the issue regarding his sense of humor. That along with his writing of Freaks and Geeks was top notch imo. If he was making a movie with the original characters I know there would not be anywhere near the number of complaints.

I get wanting the original characters. I get wanting the original actors. I get worrying about the quality in general.

But I do think that eventually people are going to have to realize that it's 2016 now...not the early 80's. That's not going to change. The style of comedy in this movie, while it may well be similar, is not going to be the exact same as it was in the original films. There are different actors, a different director, etc, and in some ways, the nature of cinematic comedy has changed over the years. There's going to be some slapstick in this film. Heck, there was arguably slapstick in the original film.

I don't find them funny at all. McCarthy is getting forced fed to us like Kevin Hart was and I'm tired of it.

Wow, three weeks ago since the announcement and not a word since. Brilliant marketing.

When are we getting the full trailer?

There's been a LOT of test screenings since December, and the trailer review guy said he watched 3 different trailers with the third connecting it to the originals, I'm going to assume that Feig cut the film in several different versions just like the trailers and see which version gets a better reaction.

With that said...did they at least use the original GB theme?

Given the level of security, the presence of Paul Feig and Ivan Reitman in Roseville California, and the chatter of the studio heads that were there I seriously doubt the veracity of that information. I eavesdrop...and they were all nervous about showing it for the first time and that was in February. Plus, even with NDAs I would imagine that the "confirmed" spoilers that are so glaringly wrong would have been set right by now. Believe me, I am boiling inside wanting to talk openly about it.

The story would have to be worked from the very beginning to connect it with the originals, unless they do an alternate reality, multiverse thing. In the new Ghostbusters remake, people don't believe in ghosts, the events of the first 2 films never happened and the tech to catch ghosts doesn't exist. The story doesn't work if you slip in,"oh hey, this other stuff happened 30 years ago."

That said, the version I saw was rough. Most f/x shots were unfinished. I expect to see radically different things when I see it again upon release. I do not expect they could shoe horn this into a sequel without refilming the whole thing, and without bringing all the people that did cameos back in. Bill Murray would never agree to it. His cameo is awesome BTW.

:hmm

I always assumed whatever idea Drew Pearce had for connecting everything together was through a mutliverse concept. (Similar to what's being done on The Flash show) but as far as this film goes, it's completely stand alone.

It was stupid of them to announce a trailer three weeks early. They could have just waited until this week.

There seems to be some sort of press event currently happening at the Ghost Corp offices, today.

Feig and Reitman are both there:

They're premiering the trailer tonight at the fan event, prepare for internet implosion.

Yeah, I can already predict. About 2/3 of us will say it looks impressive but we'll see like one or two gags that don't sit right. 1/3 of us will say it looks horrible, and is an insult to the franchise.

I wish none of the original cast did cameos. I'm fine with trying to judge this film on its own merits. But I just know seeing them pop up will only take me out of the movie and make me wish I was watching a true sequel.

Feig tweeted the time the trailer will release.

I'm just indifferent to it altogether, but that might as well be enthusiasm given the state of this thread.
