The New Ghostbusters - Part 8

Ivan Reitman, the original director, was supposed to direct this. But Amy Pascal from Sony didn't want him, she wanted to find someone who was more in line with the direction she and the studio wanted to go.

That (and especially after Harold Ramis died) was when Retiman backed down.

Ivan Reitman is a personal hero of mine. I had the pleasure of sitting in the seat in front of him at the test screening. I got to eavesdrop a little before it started and he was upbeat and looking forward to seeing it. He laughed a few belly laughs and chuckled a lot.

Even if he had directed it, and it was a loose continuation I think it would have been inferior.

I saw on a couple of places (including here) where they said the toys are already in clearance. I thought to myself, maybe it's an isolated instance. Nope, sure enough Walmart, Target and Toys R Us has the 6" female GB figures in clearance on their web site. The movie isn't even out yet.

The figures are low quality, bad sculpts and too high a price point. I'm not paying $80 for bad sculpts and shoddy paint jobs.

I agree with all of that, I just cant think if any director that could have done this justice.

The original cast and director were all just perfect and worked off each other so well. Thats movie magic you just cant recreate easily especially 30 years later

I totally agree with this.

I see there was a Mad Max convo on the last page.

I think that's exactly right...which is part of the reason the I dislike Ghostbusters 2 so much. It is so inferior to the original that it falls hard, even though it isn't "that bad".

I think the reason I liked the Feig Ghostbusters is that it is a completely different take on the material. I doubt a Ghostbusters 3 would have ever delivered in a way that honored and elevated the original. At least this remake can stand as something different and since there is no way it could ever live up to the original, I'm glad it isn't tied to its canon and continuity.

Thing is for me, liking something for being different depends on the way it's different, because it can be different in a way that's inferior. Some people liked Emilia Clarke's portrayal of Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys because it was different, but I didn't like it because of the way it was different.

I don't think it's a question of recreating all of the magic from the original film. Ghostbusters 1984 is a film that has great mixture of sci-fi, horror and simple, quirky humour with a great script and a near perfect cast.

I think had the new film been a continuation instead of a remake with the remaining original Ghostbusters passing the torch to a new team (with males and females), it would be easier to accept overall by fans and general movie goers.

It’s funny… On Canada Day I was at house in cottage country with my girlfriend and a bunch of her friends. Eventually, the topic of movies came up. When the new Ghostbusters movie came up, my girlfriend’s female friend, who said she thinks the original film is just decent, merely stated that remaking a classically beloved film with just a switch of males to females and slapstick, lazy humour just doesn’t fit the overall context of what the original film presented. She even said the night before she saw a TV commercial of Melissa McCarthy shooting the giant white ghost in the crotch was just cringe worthy. She said had the film featured a mixture of males and females working together as equals with the same kind of humour that was presented in the original films, it could be a much better sale.

Then someone else mentioned that it seems that the film is showing men who don’t seem to be too bright (Chris Hemsworth’s character, McCarthy shooting a male looking ghost in the crotch) but more highlighting females as superior. I hope that isn’t the case in the film. I really don’t. I would love to see men and women showed as equals.

Oh, no doubt. It's VERY rare for the remake/reboot of a classic to be as good as the original. And while we're on the subject, my favorite sequel/reboot/remake in recent memory was Mad Max Fury Road. New cast and new technology, but same writer, same director, same spirit as the original.

I think it also didn't hurt that the studio basically let him make whatever he wanted. I doubt Sony would have ever let Reitman do that, even if he did stay on to direct.

Just curious am I the only one seeing a gay or bi subtext to that gif or is it supposed to look like he's doing something else?

I don't see how it's gay, because Toecutter is simply licking an ice cream cone that Max's wife is holding.

So now it's bad quality the reason they're not selling? lol

How do you explain the same 6" male versions from the original movies being sold out and hard to find in stores or selling from $30-$60 (each) on Amazon?

And if they're for kids, then why would they care what they looked like?

Nostalgia. The classics that came out with that line looked terrible too, and they made much less of them. I had the chance to buy them and didn't. I already have much better versions that cost the same from a different line. Anyway, I was speaking about why I didn't buy them.

blue - I thought Murray couldn't be less interested in his part in the movie. From what I remember it looked like a disinterested, obligatory, mandatory cameo. I know his role called for him to be dismissive but it felt beyond that to me. Like it actually pained him to be there. Just my feeling.

I thought the clearance of the new figures was limited to Target, which they are doing their summer reset (new product hits shelves in August in advance to back to school) but now hearing that they are hitting clearance at Walmart (also does resets in July but not as regimented as Target) and TRU is not a great sign.

It just doesn't feel right.

And I cringed when Hemworth's held up those shirtless photos of him and asked if they made him looked like a doctor.

There's just a generic quality to what we're seeing. The frustrating element is that there's so much hoopla for something that otherwise looks middle of the road. There's just very little that feels inspired.

Did the people that made Meet the Spartans movies secretly make this?

So bad. It's become a parody of itself. If they were trying to re-capture the magic of Annie Potts' "We got ONE!" and them showing up at the Sedgewick Hotel, from the original, mission failed.

And they don't need traps? smdh

They use traps in the movie. That battle is about pushing back an army of angry ghosts that have almost reached the peak of their power to manifest. By this point in the movie they can do serious physical harm because their energy has been amplified.

Which is pretty much how I felt about Ghostbusters 2. I enjoyed, but didn't love it.

It's honestly hard to tell if his demeanor was an acting choice, or personal. It worked for the character. Either way, he isn't just there to be a piece of gender propaganda.

I had some Facebook messages with the guy who said that the embargo got pushed to Monday. He's now saying the embargo is still Sunday. Obviously time differences are relative. 10 AM PST is 6 PM BST, the eve before UK release.

All the movement seems weightless/slow and the actresses disinterested.

MIB3 had the same problem and I assume RPID suffered that too.

MIB3 managed a 69% on RT, though I think most of that had to do with Brolin's Jones impression.
